My father recently passed away. He and I were both Big Star Wars fans and after taking care of some expenses I decided to expand my Star Wars collection. Your videos have been crucial in helping me make decisions. Love the channel! As of now I've got older VHS releases of A New Hope, and Empire. A regular set of the laser discs (came with a player that I bought) , The Definitive Edition LaserDisc, a box set of the 97 special edition on VHS, episodes 1 & 2 on VHS, 3 on DVD, the 2006 DVD set, and the Blu-ray set. I also own the LP box set relese they did a few years back. Most of the VHS and DVDs I already owned before my father passed he had somewhat of a collection I'm just expanding upon it
I have a VHS deluxe box set of Star Wars A New Hope letterboxed which cost me $100 about 40 years ago ! As I remembered it was the first version of Star Wars that was available on VHS
I for one love the 2004 editions I remember the first time it was announced on tv I seen it on the news channel and they were showing comparisons to the 1997 versions and I was blown away by it i said to my dad we need this than one day my dad came home from work and said here I got you that remastered star wars DVD you were talking about I got so happy good times I still have those DVDs which ever version comes out star wars will always be something special
I'm kind of torn between the special editions and the originals. I was born in the 90's so I'll never really experience the originality of the films but I will say there are somethings I love and HATE about the altered versions. If I could i would mix and mash them into one giant collection. For example: I hate A New Hope's altered scenes and the unnecessary addition of CGI but the only thing I do like is the color correction and the death star explosion is given more of an actual large explosion instead of a firecracker one. Empire didn't get a lot of altered stuff so I would definitely keep my Blu-Ray copy of that Jedi also didn't get much change that I hated EXCEPT Vader' yelling out: "noooooooo" which ruins it for me. Unfortunately I can't have everything I want so I'll just buy the unaltered original blu ray version whenever Disney comes out with it.
come on the cgi shots of the falcon and the new death star assault from a new hope are awesome. plus the new shot from ben's home and the shot of mos eisley spaceport seen from the top of that mountain.
Oh right. forgot about those. falcon, deathstar explosion and assault. all that. i hate the added CGI while luke and obi wan are going and inside Mos Eisley
6:10 this faces set, the "one last time" of the originals was also available on vhs in widescreen (laserdisc was widescreen only). Also the set that has the George Lucas interview with Leonard Maltin. 7:16 the special editions were also on laserdisc, widescreen only. The laserdiscs had a few concept art slideshows that weren't present on the vhs but the feature on the changes and 3 trailers made in 1997 appear on vhs as well. 8:35 this vhs set was also available in widescreen and there was a laserdisc set (widescreen only) in Japan. Same version of the movies as the 1997 tapes and discs. Phantom Menace laserdisc was sold only in Japan but I saw it at a video store once that carried a lot of laserdiscs so perhaps not that hard to find in the US.
@4:55, I remember my brother getting that boxset for Christmas in 93! I still have it, though the top of the cover is torn and has been taped. I recently got the set at @6:08 at a thrift store.
wow jon what an amazing collection of home movie versions wish i'd kept my various vhs releases absolutly loving the blu ray looks and sounds beyond amazing i think i prefair the uk packaging removing the disc looks like it may be a fidley process but then i am cack handed you never cease to amaze me with your collection btw luke gotten into marvel universe you were right there amazing especially thor reborn
I recently bought the 1995 unaltered Star Wars movies on VHS it is the cheapest way to get the original theatrical versions of the film. I hope that Disney is able to release the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars trilogy on Blu-Ray some day with cleaned up picture quality and surround sound.
@acidhouse100 totaly agree with you however back then it was amazing that even billy dee williams was cast thankfully lucas didnt share the same opinions as the rest of the media in the 70's/80's however there were a few black actors cast as background characters most famously wilrow hood ( ice cream guy)
The repackaged Blu-ray box set that was released on October 13, 2015, the one that features Darth Vader on the cover, appears to be a much better then the one that was released back in 2011, because that one is appears to be a standard Blu-ray jewel box that the discs are cased inside that I saw last night when I was at Best Buy. I did not buy it, because I already have it despite mine being a Japanese release, but I glanced at it when I was there and notice that the jewel case was the standard one that is normally associated with Blu-ray discs.
The UK copy I've got has plastic holders for the discs, not those awful cardboard ones seen in the video. Also the discs are a nightmare to get out of the plastic holders, they don't just 'snap' out like they do on most other cases with the centre hub lock.
OMG!! i want that so bad, but im in a spot with cash as of now, but man im so pumped to get that! being a few days after the making of this video, im sure you watched some of it or all of it. How do you like it? whats your favorite thing about the whole SW blu ray? I'm dyin to get it man! ughhh so kool!
the widescreen version of the special edition vhs has the theatrical trailers for the special edition im surprised they didnt also include them on the pan and scan vhs as well
Now days, I prefer widescreen too, but in the old days when I had a box-shaped TV set, widescreen was lousy because you could hardly see the damn picture... it was so small.
Hey my friend.! A great collection, I’m building the same collection myself, wanted to kindly ask, out of all the releases, which one is your favorite.? :)
I have the THX widescreen laser disc's, which are the best quality version of the films in the original configuration i.e. no modifications. They are the reason I will always keep my laser disc player. I was going to do a response video so everyone can see the covers, but mine are still in their shrink wrap, except for the side you take the disc's out of, so it sort of spoils the point of being able to see all of the cover art. Great video it was nice to see all the different versions.
I have 2015 star wars Blu Ray and it really good but it missing something is original version of original trilogy of 1977,80,83 version of star wars classic. I heard they not doing that on Blu Ray so I might planning to buy a DVD version of original version then.
10:30 the scroll about the first trilogy dvd being the first audio commentary is wrong. The 1993 laserdisc Definitive Collection you reviewed in a newer video had audio commentary for parts of the movies plus other extras that have not been made available anywhere else.
See, this is all we want in every og Star Wars trilogy set, the special edition for when you want to watch the whole saga, and the original films if you only want to watch the og trilogy as a standalone trilogy
the 2006 versions are the only ones i own. i only watch the unaltered versions. i won't ever watch the ruined so called "special editions"(i've seen the changes in youtube videos and it's embarrassing, and ruins the films)
@@نادرالیراحمان Download Adywan's Star Wars Revisited, because it's great, it hasn't these unnecessary changes and this is what special editions should have been.
I was just at a yard sell, and I found a full screen attack of the clones 2 disc dvd. WHO WOULD SELL THE GREAT MEMES? Whoever did, I’m glad I bought it
John I have the THX laser disc they are better then the ones you have I have both sets. The THX episode 4 is not the theatrical release. George Lucas added small audio changes to episode 4. When they land in the death star and R2 is looking for Princess Leia they added some extra lines for C-3PO to explain where to find Princess Leia. There was also some jawa audio added as well. Nothing was that big to called it a directors cut but not truly the theatrical release.
have you watched the other laserdiscs? the widescreen version you have are from a Japanese print and are not as good as the Japanese. You did not mention that the aspect ratio adjust during star wars and return of the Jedis picture is at the top. I don't think you have even watched them. Another you tuber has both versions and prefers the pan and scan hands down. The pan and scan problems you mentioned was on cbsfox version but the Fox version is fine. Most people believe the definitive trilogy is the best picture but colors were changed. In all, every version of laserdisc has its advantages and problems.
I own the CBS VHS versions, the LaserDisc THX original versions and Special Editions, the DVD versions, the Bluray Complete saga set And for good measure, the Harmy Despecialized versions! And if Disney releases official versions of the original films on Bluray, I'll be there again! I drew the line at Digital copies though.
I don't about enhanced sound enhanced colour or making a shot wider. But when you start adding dance numbers and Vader yelling NO....NOOOOO I'm gonna get pissed
Very interesting video. I have been a Star Wars fan since the early 90's. I was lucky enough to see the original trilogy on cable TV. The trilogy before Lucas went in and made changes. I say those that are upset over the recent changes and want the original SW movies. Get the laser disc editions.I have seen alot of these old VHS editions show up at Half Priced Book stores where I live. Seem like they would be neat to own. I have the 2004 2 disc releases w/ the original movies.
Hey John, do you have the Original Trilogy Unaltered Theatrical Version Special Letterbox Collector's Edition VHS Blue Box Set with the Hologram on the front? It came with From Star Wars to Jedi (The Making of a Saga) and with the book named George Lucas - The Creative Impulse. It came out in 1992.
I have the '95 vhs and the '97 s.e vhs, which I grew up on. Bought myself the '95 vhs about a year or so ago... sad, but true...and for a person that grew up with the special editions, and then later with the three that shall not be named, when I saw the '95 vhs I was blown away! Now when I watch the trilogy, I watch the '95 vhs, but I do hope that Disney/20thCenturyFox/LucasFilm can release the originals in beautiful blu-ray, and stop with what we have now.
I'm very much against the Special Editions of the Star Wars trilogy which is why I went out of my way to buy the VHS tapes and later on the Limited Edition DVDs for cheap. Honestly, I think Lucas should just leave the movies alone, many of the enhancements add nothing to the films, and some of them even ruin certain scenes. (I'm looking at you, ROTJ dance number... and you, too, Greedo.)
If Darth Lucas released the restored version of the unaltered trilogy, I actually wouldn't mind watching the special editions every now and again. But since we don't have a choice, I haven't watched the original trilogy for several years now. The 2006 limited edition dvds are arriving in the mail soon, I can't wait.
I agree. I don't really mind the special editions. I actually like em. Don't get me wrong there are some really bad changes (Greedo shooting first, Christianson replacing shaw, Vader yelling Noooooooooooo! As he picks up the emporer), I'm just really upset that we can't see the originals.
I never had a problem with the special editions. Also am a fan of the prequels. What I do have a problem with is how George was treated for these things. I mean its ok to not like the changes or the prequals. But the hate he got for it was so beyond wrong. Its one of the reasons why he sold it to Disney. What gets me is some of those same people who called him every name under the book now say how much they miss him after the backlash of the last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. I feel bad for him as he gave us this amazing universe and after Retun of the Jedi all he got from some people after that was hate. I just wonder if things would have been had he kept it and made the sequel trilogy. It sure would have been better then the disjointed mess of a trilogy we got from Disney. Glad I got my Return of the Jedi original print VHS for a $1 :D
Nothing beats my leather bound laserdisc set of the originals with the hard bound book :-) Its called "Star Wars Trilogy The Definitive Collection".
