This game was pure crack to a 8 year old kid! Too bad the NES port could never compare to the arcade, i guess that's what made arcades special still.
I didn't even knew it was based on an arcade game, until I saw it years later at a Chuck E Cheese.
I was also 8 yrs old and I used to bleed my mother dry of quarters playing this game at the bowling alley.
I'm 10 years old now
To all you young'uns... This was the arcade version and it was insanely well recieved. It was far above what the NES could port. The game released on the NES was confusing, poorly designed, and insanely difficult, especially for the children it was designed for. So Konami reworked the arcade version to slim it down to an 8 bit cartridge and released it as TMNT 2: The Arcade Game do people would be more interested. By the time they made TMNT 3: the Manhattan Project for the NES, there were further advancements in game design techniques so they were able to make it at a higher quality, closer to the original arcade game but still not quite. It wasn't until TMNT 4: Turtles in Time for the SNES that we finally got a home console game that was comparable to this gem.
Actually the nes version had some levels the arcade didn't have also that version you could fight Baxter The Fly you only got his human form in the arcade also I didnt like fighting Bebop and Rocksteady at the same time.
Probably one of my fav arcade game from Chuckie Cheese, also The Simpsons and X-Men
Chuck e cheese? Find arcade game?
Omg me too
Dont forget final fight, captain commando, the punisher, and alien vs predator.
What about Showbiz Pizza?
I was one of those kids who saw it but never got to play it because it was always hogged up. 😭
I had the NES version though. 😌
This game should come out on PSN and XBLA where we can download it on PS4 and Xbox One.
Thumbs up if you agree!
does anyone happen to have a download code for this game for sale for the xbox 360? i realize this is a completely longshot, but im willing to pay to get this game on my 360.
It used to be on Xbox Live Arcade, I still have it on Xbox 360 from when I bought it and downloaded it to my hard drive. You cannot download it anymore for Xbox Live Arcade, though, ever since, the license for TMNT video games went from Ubisoft to Nickelodeon.
8bitDNA Do you still want the game?
yes!!!
8bitDNA I couldn't wait got it for free on my pc last night
I remember this being in a lot of pizza huts as well back in the day lol.
Made up for the product placement.
For the time the graphics were amazing
Yeah,It don't got old. Old but gold!
This is still the best TMNT video game of all time in my opinion. It feels by far the most like the show. Turtles in Time didn't really feel like a Turtles game. It felt more like a game that the Turtles just happened to be in. This had the right feel to match the show.
James Edward you are not alone
Konami beat 'em up so difficult.
Yes!! And I found this game early 90,s near my neighborhood in La Alborada Ecuador! Incredible
See! 2 Players or 4 players version arcade machine!
Yes
My childhood going to the Arcade playing this game I’ll never forget
Pizza hut and this arcade! 💯
I call that the paradise :)
Well this or Mortal Kombat 1
👍🏻
This game means a lot to me. Growing up, I often felt like my home was a glass bowl, and I looked at my brothers and sisters not as siblings, but like they were chameleons or lizards or even tadpoles. It hardly entered my mind that there was something better than this.
At night, I would go hungry often. There wasn't enough food to go around. I was lucky to get a lettuce leaf or a carrot. Maybe even a seed from our parrot. Believe me when I tell you the word "gourmet" just didn't exist for me.
On a rare few occasions, I can remember us all going out to eat at our local Pizza Hut. I remember as a young kid thinking of that pizza power, it was like a flying saucer food delight! Ahh, pizza power. Now THAT is what makes me feel alright.
Amazing story!
Amazing dumb waste of time
You crazyyyyy
Nice to see some love for Donatello
Ikr
Leader of the turtles.
(Yeah, I said it!!!)
@@traviswall1982 so true he dont even need the other wash up tmnts
@@traviswall1982 the leader is Leonardo, but I can play with all of them except for Michaelangelo
Donatello was the best turtle in this game
As a kid I could never get past Bebop and Rocksteady when you fight them together. It's really cool to see what's beyond that.
I remember playing this game with my late father when I was a kid. And my mom would watch us from behind. What agreat game it was. Such good memories.
"Say Ya prayers toitles!" My brother and myself completed this at Pontins in Blackpool in 1990!
Lol!!!
I remember being blown away by both the opening and the start of the first level using the actual theme song! No better way to get pumped up for a TMNT game than the classic song!
Favorite arcade game of all time. I remember my parents giving me only a few quarters to go to the arcade and play and could never get past the third level. A true beat em up classic. Man I wish I could go back in time.
My father picked my up on saturdays to an arcade place where they also had ice cream and TMNT was my favorite show ever so I can still remember playing this and I can still remember how my mind was in awe.
👍🏻
I remember playing the physical arcade back in the late 80's. Damn how time flys by.
you re right. i remember too playing it around 90/91 15 years old...
They have this arcade game at this Arcade Bar just down the street from where I live in Dover, New Hampshire (where the TMNT originated at Mirage Studio). I always feel like I'm ten year old again.
This was so epic back in the day. The machine was always crowded at the arcade.
I used to play this game back in 1989 man I Miss this game I wish they Remake this game
tmnt shredder revenge is in development
I love classic arcade games like this one is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Arcade game from 1989 it takes me right back to my childhood growing up in the late 1980s!!!! I love arcade games from back in the day!!!!! They have Arcade 1 up at Walmart and everywhere too!!!!! Thanks so much for posting this video!!!! I love it!!!!!
You're welcome.
Arcade 1 up sells Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade game right at Walmart and everywhere too!!!!!
Just bought my tmnt 1up arcade machine and it shows up in 2 days! I can't wait! 400 dollars well spent!
Lucky
@@wastedxlama54 it's totally awesome man. Plays and looks just like the original and takes up half the space. I'm trying to make room to get the star wars one next.
this and xmen were so badass. I wish I could go back with the quarters I have now haha.
bb oliver which x-men? The fighting one or something else?
@@PhoenixPhire22 The classic six player beat'em'up.
Though Children of the Atom was pretty bad ass too.
Dropped my fair share of coin playing this bad boy back in the day. Use to volunteer to get out Friday night dinner at the Fish and Chip shop just so I could play it
The amount of money I spent on trying to beat this game, I could have bought a new skateboard back then. The turtles ruled my life!! The toys, the NES game, the pillows and bed sheets!! I was a lucky kid. Now you youngsters have Roblox, Fortnite, and RUclips channels of people playing these classic games!!
This game was pretty much where all my pocket money ended up on the weekend. Good times mashing the buttons with three other mates. Kids today will never have that feeling.
The graphics are amazing for the date but the SOUND, the arcade machine has some really badass speakers and you feel all that explosions as a kid, amazing game
10 years old at Butlins Bognor Regis 1990. Played this until I was dead.
👍🏻
The best epic battle between u and Rocksteady and Bebop, seen them ram each was the best part
Thanks!
Just like in the original TMNT cartoon from the 1980s😁
Finished it with 3 other friends when it came out. There was a huge arcade machine for 4 players and I was Leonardo. God, the memories...
The fact that the enemies got flickering red faster and faster each time you hit them used to stress me the fuck out as a kid lmao
Basty Elwood Back then in Konami Arcade Games Flickering Red Bosses Were all the Rage. LOL!!!
This is bad ass, played with Donatello. Favorite turtle .
Would've been cool to see it played with all turtles as well.
Thank you !
If they did not take the game down from Xbox Live arcade because of the license change, I could have done one with all the turtles.
Donatello is the best character in the game
loved this game as a kid.
I loved that when I played this one time, and the arcade was turned up loud. When I put in the quarter, a loud cowabunga and the attention in the arcade turned to me. Suddenly, everyone wanted to play. It was awesome.
The jump swat by Donatello was great. Took care of lots of foot soldiers
Its wild that this game is only 40 min long, with the last 10 min being fighting Krang and Shredder. It felt like hours playing as a kid.
The way they digitized the theme song was pretty good, the clarity is surprisingly good!
Mike you are bringing it back for me right now!!!
Enjoy. TMNT fans united!
Still one of the best licensed video games and one that is most faithful to its source material.
This was the holy grail as a kid. I used to beg my parents for change to play this and The Simpsons arcade game when we would holiday at Center Parcs. Great days. Thanks for the awesome games Konami.
One of the great ones.
same here! if I had the the money i would buy the full arcade machine! turtle power!
Alicia Petronio How could i get tmnt 1988?
Evolution of the classic beat-em-ups first boss quotes:
Rocksteady: Say your prayers, toitles!
Mr. Burns's wrestler: Come on!
Pyro: Pyro will turn you to toast!
you forgot Magneto: WELCOME TO DIE
@@gfx2943 I was quoting the first bosses in the games
I'm still amazed that they put the original intro audio intact for a late 80s videogame.
0:24 Watching Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael coming down the skyscraper with the Ninja Turtles theme song playing in the background always gave me goosebumps.
Brilliant I was 13 or 14 I think when this was in the arcade. Me and and an old school mate sneaked into a pub to play it lol
👍🏻
I remember this being in the corner of a pub. Only remember hearing this SFX and theme over the noise of the pub but being SO invested in it!
back when arcades existed lol, miss those days
I was too young to have seen it back when I was a kid, but... there it is!
April owns a bong!
23 people suck, this game is my all time favourite arcade game, it had everything, the music, gameplay, backdrops....perfect but bloody hard!
Man, Konami made the best arcade beat-em up games back in the day with this game, Turtles in Time, The Simpsons Arcade game, and The X-Men arcade game.
I played this game today on the "TMNT 2 Battle Nexus" Disc on OG Xbox and oh boy !! Its not the same without the right music...
amazing arcade game. button bashing mayhem as a child!
The fire looked so good for the time, my Uncle had this arcade in his fish and chip shop, I went loads to play for free lol
I still want to play this game haha!
Donatello that was my go to as well, this game plus Xmen and Sunset Riders was the ultimate arcade experience back then and of course Wacky Gator too!!!!!
Audio Fella The classics you named are priceless but I thought I was the only one who played wacky gator lol.
Using Donnie for his reach, good man. The nes version didn't do this classic Justice
Fuck no they didn't lol. Tmnt 2 should've went first on nes.
I couldn't remember what system they did this for. I remembered playing it at the arcade and on a system but I don't remember any differences. What made the system version not do it justice? And does anybody know if this is a downloadable game for Wii?
Robert West The difference is this is the original tmnt but it came out on nes as tmnt 2. The 1st tmnt on nes was totally different than this with the storyline the gaming graphics etc. No it’s not available to download on wii.
RunIt Back oh ok. Yeah I remember the first one as well. It was pretty difficult and I hated the underwater stage. Thanks.
@@robertwest4299 I'll save the underwater stage aggravation story for another day😄 but you're welcome.
Playing with Don was always optimal for the arcade joystick/button layout combination. It felt the most organic and I usually performed the best. I loved using Leo (who is also my favorite) but the layout was crammed and the diagonal where you would hit the jump button more often with your palm. Ralph had the same issue but at least the diagonal was reversed.
Trogdor was a TMNT fan
I mean... he was a dragon TMNT fan
Err... maybe he was just a dragon?
Mike, awesome, thank you for sharing!
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
I remember my first time playing this on the Boblo Boat between Detroit and Boblo Island Amusement Park, Ontario CA. One of the best arcade games ever.
If I had known this game was on Xbox Live Arcade,
I'd still have my 360.
You cannot play online, anymore. So, basically half the fun is lost. It was amazing with 4 turtles, and 20 lives each. But corporations have to mess with everyone for their own interest, otherwise, they wouldn't be corporations.
I bought this original 1989 TMNT arcade, 4 player, 5 years back, put it in my office. I used it, as a team building exercise with the staff . 😂🙈, on Saturday’s.
Now no one has the time to play.
I just want to say great job on the lets play!
Thanks.
God that intro and the first stage bring back memories of the summer when I was little. I’d always pick leo or Mikey never could get pass the boss but I’d play this all the time!
0:19 One of these days, one of my dreams is to start a show with these two lines, and launch into this truncated section of the TMNT theme, then launching into Stage 1's BGM.
Ever since nickelodeon picked up turtles franchise they went south
This game takes me back to the smell and noise of the arcade I use to go to.
They had this game at the local submarine in Chicago in Englewood. I played this game maybe 3,4 times because all the hustlers would have quarters for days trying to flip the game. You just had to wait your turn!
First game I ever played xD Amazing to watch this but OMG I feel old now lol
Hold on april.....lol damn too sweet!
been looking to play this game again for over 25 years!!!😁
Great upload.. Cheers!! #Nostalgia
Christopher Johnson
dowoad emulator.com and the arcade meme u can play this full version and others
I've played this. Its so fun. I have TMNT: Arcade Attack on DS. I've played it for about 9 years now.
Donatello was my favorite in the game and in the cartoon.💜💜💜💜💜
Leonardo my favorite character
this game make me fee like my chlidhood :3
I remember when I was 9 that me and my friend had a judo class at the local leisure centre. It had this arcade game and we were absolutely obsessed. One day my friend bought about £5 of change with him and we were determined to complete it after class. The only thing we didn't consider is that my step-dad wasn't too happy about waiting for us during the class and then watching us pump a load of money into an arcade machine!! He dragged us away whilst we still had a load of credits. Never did complete it!
A game of this level in 1989. An artistic miracle by Konami
It was a pretty obsolete game by the time of 1989. It is based on a 1979 CPU and the video hardware in 90s could do 16-bit color instead of 12-bit of this arcade machine.
I remember my aunt’s boyfriend I believe had this and a bunch of other games on his Xbox 360 I think and it was so much fun playing them
Spent many quarters at walmart, on this game, back in the day ;)
Kids today will _never_ understand having to save your lunch money to hit Aladdin's Castle after school to play arcade games.
I used to get neither lunch money, nor money for a one time pay to play a video game. *Lol.* I was almost always given a packed lunch from home. And even if I wanted to go to the arcade with a group of friends after school, I couldn't because there were no arcades around my house and school. That's what sucks about South and West Asia compared to North America, Europe and Japan.
this game, Xmen, and Simpsons are the best beat up games...too bad it's 25 hundred to have one
Just buy a pandora box for like 200 quid
Yeah the Simpsons was defiantly one of the best Arcade Games I played.
thnx for The Simpsons, I forgot about that one, but when I looked at it, alle the levels came back from my memory. Great!
How can i geh Tmnt 1988 ?
Matthew Mata I’m hoping 1UP will make a version of this. Maybe it could have all three of the Konami arcade classics. Price it at like $300! I’d do it!
This was always at the Big Movie Theaters in the early 90's
👍🏻
That darn Lieutenant Granitor and his flamethrower... 😣😣
Too bad he and the other stone warrior didn't bring the weather satellite with them lol.
30 fucking years and still looks amazing!
This is where all my Chuck E. Cheese tokens went to this and arctic thunder
This would of been sick to play this on SNES as a kid. I would of cried.
It would have runned slower on the SNES. That's why Turtles in Time felt slower and more jerky on the SNES. Those consoles didn't have the processing and rendering power that arcade machines had back then. I really liked how smooth and fast beat em ups used to run on arcade machines. If you practice on the arcade versions of this, and Turtles in Time, and get good at the arcade games. Then you'll automatically be able use the least amount of lives, and beat the console versions on the hardest difficulty because the arcade games automatically make your reflexes A LOT better!
Good since 1989
Lineups were out the door to play this game.
as a kid i dont hink i was ever able to get past the first level before my mom told me it was time to go since it was outside a walmart or i didnt have any more quarters left.
Fire! Hang on April! (While splinter just stands there)
P.S. Raphael is my Fav Turtle!!
2021 anyone!! Ahh the good ole Chucky cheese days where it was literally impossible to win this game!
Fire! There are obviously Foot Soldiers!
This was on arcade at a local 2 for 1 pizza near my house and use to be crowded with kids and quarters lined up along the arcade screen. Unfortunately I didn't see the arcade no more after the L.A. riots the pizza joint was burned down, it has since been a laundromat.
Dam. Tragic story.
@@TheMikeFactor I was in kindergarten at the time, kids loved that arcade, final fight and street fighter. I was sad but thank God for Emulators 😁
@@igfromthe323 I had to pay 3$ for 2 life bars because of where I was! And could never sum up the courage to ask my mom and dad.
@@TheMikeFactor I know the pain man 😔
@@igfromthe323 Were you also only able to just envy the kids who had the money? In United States it would have just cost 25 cents for 2 life bars, assuming the arcade wasn't always overcrowded.
We're definitely going to play this 😏
I spent an insane amount of pocket money on this game in my local chip shop back in the early 90s lol
I remember when my mom would wash clothes back in 89 I was like 6 and this arcade machine was there along with a cold drink machiene and candy and chips and everytime we went there we she got her check, she would look at me with those eyes, lmfao she knew where her change was going.
Memories like that is what made this a timeless classic.
childhood memories playing this in the bowling alley
Turtles in Time might be the best game out of the two, overall. But, TMNT (1989) is the more iconic out of the two with out a doubt, & the one that must of us will remember. & on top of that, it came out just in time when TMNT were at the top of their peak. By the time when Turtles in Time released, the TMNT were on the down side of the their popularity.
Oh yeah, this gem of a game is coming back thanks to Arcade 1Up...
buuuuuuuuuuut, I'm gonna save my money in case they make an X-Men arcade one...
If they make an XMen. I doubt it will have more than 4 people. Or it will be double what the rest of them cost.
Seeing this brought back the odor of a chuck e cheeses in the early 90s
lol am glad am not the only one who had trouble with the splinter mission
