This is a picturesque valley of the Aaldzga River in the eastern part of Abkhazia - a state located between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains and not recognized by most countries of the world. The history of the modern republic of Abkhazia begins with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the Georgian-Abkhaz war of 1992-1993, as a result of which Abkhazia proclaimed its independence from Georgia. One of the combat areas was Tkwarchal (Tkvarcheli) - an industrial city in the east of Abkhazia. Three suburbs of Tkvarcheli - Akarmara, Jantukha and Polyana are located 10-12 km to the east, upstream of the Aaldzga River. These settlements were connected with Tkvarcheli by road and railway. Nowadays this dismantled and abandoned railway is a convenient place for grazing livestock. Akarmara was a mining town specializing in coal mining. The construction of the town was started in the Stalin's era. It consisted of a dozen five-storey residential buildings with all required infrastructure - there were hotel, school, hospital, restaurant, palace of culture, cinema, boarding house and market. Some buildings were constructed by German prisoners after the World War II in the Stalinist Сlassicism style. During the Georgian-Abkhaz war, the Tkvarcheli with its suburbs survived a one-year siege by Georgian forces. Georgia failed to regain Abkhazia under its control and in 1993 the war ended. Most Georgians, who made up half of the 500,000 population of Abkhazia, left the country. As well as other states of the former Soviet Union, in the 90-s Abkhazia experienced a catastrophic industrial decline. All of the 8 coal mines in the vicinity of Akarmara, Jantukha and Polyana were closed. (nevertheless, surface coal mining is still ongoing at an altitude of 1600m) Due to all these factors, Akarmara was almost abandoned. Some buildings became overgrown, others are abandoned recently. There are also habitable five-story buildings. Nowadays, several dozen people live in Akarmara and there is one road stall, which also serves as a place for news sharing. Local residents are engaged in cattle breeding and beekeeping. Recently, Akarmara has become an attractive place for tourists and fans of post-apocalypse.

The wildlife just roaming around is the best part for me, what was once farm animals locked in some tiny spaces now have a whole city to themselves with noone to bother them (aside from predators maybe) I am in no way vegan but it is heartbreaking to see these friendly animals just packed into trailers or tiny spaces where they cant move.

The scenes are honestly breathtaking and beautiful. The aura given off by them is one of remembrance and an embrace of the passage of time. Everything here… is returning to nature. From nature everything began and to nature everything, and everyone will return. This is a prime example. Every structure known to man will eventually rot away after we go extinct. Это живописная долина реки Аалдзга на востоке Абхазии - государства, расположенного между Черным морем и Кавказским хребтом и не признанного большинством стран мира. История современной республики Абхазия начинается с момента распада СССР в 1991 году и Грузино-Абхазской войны 1992-1993 годов, в результате которой Абхазия провозгласила свою независимость от Грузии. Одним из районов боевых действий был Ткуарчал (Ткварчели) - промышленный город на востоке Абхазии. В 10 -12 км восточнее, вверх по течению реки Аалдзга расположены 3 пригорода Ткуарчала - Акармара, Джантуха и Поляна, соединенные с ним автомобильной и железной дорогой. Сейчас эта разобранная и заброшенная железная дорога - удобное место для выпаса домашнего скота. Акармара была шахтерским городком, специализирующимся на добыче угля. Город начал возводиться в эпоху Сталина. Он состоит из десятка пятиэтажных жилых домов со всей необходимой для городского посёлка инфраструктурой - тут были гостиница, школа, больница, ресторан, дом культуры, кинотеатр, пансионат, рынок. Некоторые здания были построены пленными немцами после второй мировой войны в стиле сталинского неоклассицизма. Во время Грузино-Абхазской войны Ткуарчал с пригородами пережил осаду грузинскими войсками в течение года. Грузии не удалось вернуть Абхазию под свой контроль и в 1993 война закончилась. Большинство грузин, составлявших половину из 500-тысячного населения Абхазии, покинуло страну. Как и другие страны постсоветского пространства, в 90-х Абхазия испытала катастрофический промышленный спад. Все 8 угольных шахт в окрестностях Акармары, Джантухи и Поляны были заброшены. (тем не менее уголь до сих пор добывают открытым способом выше в горах, на высоте 1600м)
По причине всех этих факторов Акармара практически обезлюдела. На каких то домах успели прорасти деревья, другие заброшены относительно недавно. Есть также и жилые пятиэтажки. В наши дни в Акармаре проживают несколько десятков человек и работает один ларёк у дороги, служащий также и местом обмена новостями. Местные жители занимаются разведением скота, а на развалинах школы и больницы оборудованы пчелиные пасеки. В последнее время Акармара становится привлекательным местом для туристов и любителей постапокалипсиса.
Недавно был в Абхазии. Мёд там очень вкусный!

This is totally amazing...not only the historical aspect of it, but how nature is reclaiming the structures and land. The fact that anyone is still living here stuns me.....wonder how far they are from the nearest viable town or city. Most people (myself included) live in such a small world...we haven't a clue what it's like in other parts of the world-places like this. We aren't even aware that they exist. Thank you for this post. I learned something of value today. Not the least of which is that what we as people do has ramifications that last not only in our lifetime, but the lifetimes of others.

This place is the oldest territory of Georgia, this region has a great Georgian history but the propaganda of the Russian Empire formed separatist forces in Abkhazia against Georgia, there was a war against Georgia, battalions of many nationalities, Armenians, Chechens, Kazakhs, Circassians, etc. We lost the war because of Georgian traitors, the Russians expelled 500 thousand Georgians from Abkhazia in the winter, many could not even withstand the cold, thousands of frozen children, women, old young people died sadly. They had to leave these houses but Georgia will return to Abkhazia and we will demand an answer from everyone.

Это наверное один из самых живописных городков. Жить в такой красоте и в таких звуках. Выйти утром на балкон а перед тобой не окна соседнего дома, а гора лес водовад и слышишь ты не гул машин, сигнализаций и маты , а птиц шум воды и леса. Я б там на недель осталась, подлечила природой нервишки. Супер видео.

Елена, на третий день сбежали бы оттуда в ближайший города, где есть душ, канализация, водопровод, огонь, горячая вода и нет комаров.

а если хочешь непередаваемого интима с природой - то, прямо сейчас (чё лето ждать?!) ступай на болото (только там есть сопоставимая, с показанным в видео ландшафтом, влажность, для буйства флоры и фауны), ставь палатку (а лучше, принеси травы/соломы/тростника пусть мыши после тебя порадуются) и живи сама с собой хоть день - а хоть неделю :)))
*зимой, интим с природой проще - желающих из фауны - поменьше, на каких нибудь тысячу раз* :))))

Был там в 88-91 годах. Была нормальная жизнь. Рождались дети, работали магазины и школы. Жутко смотреть на эти кадры. Абхазы, как бы помягче, плохо относились к русским. Тесть работал на Ткварчельской грэс - в 90-х еле успел живым уехать. Бросил всё, что нажил. Теперь абхазы русских любят - что не доходит через голову, дойдёт через... Люди, живите мирно, уважайте друг друга. Всем добра.
у нас тут было и есть много русских, и до войны и после ,мать у меня русская отец абхаз, жили в мире до войны и после , и живем так дальше, а как на ютуб зайдешь или в какую не будь другую сеть, и про абхазию почитаешь, так сразу впечатление такое будто я не тут живу и речь не об абхазии совсем...что за чушь вечно пишете . убили..ограбили..обворовали..отняли..избили..да ска живу тут всю жизнь и ничего такого не видел не слышал, *еле успел живым уехать* а почему мои соседи даже в войну не уехали? и живут старики по сей день, и дело в том что они тоже русские, почему их никто никогда не обижал? про какую абхазию ты говоришь? в которой я живу? или которую ты придумал исходя из негативных комментариев? никому эта абхазия не дает покоя как бельмо на глазу, что грузины что русские пишут что украинцы,одно и тоже...не пойму какой смысл писать чушь, пропаганда какая то что ли? в общем лучше бы со своим дерьмом разобрались

i love places like these which remain untouched by humans, sometimes it becomes hard to believe that there are still places like these on planet earth, i don't know why but i find it hauntingly beautiful. the music in the background, pristine silence all around, crystal clear noise of the cascades. I'll genuinely be scared for my life at night here, but in the daylight, it looks so serenely mystifying.
This feels like heaven to me... It's eerie but more like beautiful...

Я там тоже была, было непонятно, как в горах строили такое... Есть постройки просто в каких то ущельях, огромные дома... как туда стройматериалы доставояли, это ведь в горах, а дороги узкие. Мы были в дождь, это еще больше нагоняло страху, но люди там живут, чего то строят, детки есть, но в непогоду они конечно отрезаны от мира на какое то время. В Абхазии очень величественная природа, если можно так сказать, величавая, гордая, неповторимая, сильная, это божественная красота и люди не имеют к ней никакого отношения, либо уважать и беречь ее, помогать ей, либо разрушать и портить. А покинутый город это, конечно, зло в человеческом обличье, зло в квадрате могло нарушить счастье покой и тишину...этот город, как наглядный пример думающему человеку, что может сотворить ненависть, зло, город, как аналог души...
