I think the whole “nobody wanting to hurt Rachel’s feelings” thing Mercedes said was spot on with how they wrote Rachel’s storylines from here until the rest of the show. NOBODY except Mercedes & Santana ever wanted to tell Rachel the truth when she was being obnoxious. I mean sure Santana was rude but a lot of the time Santana was the reality check Rachel & other members of the glee club needed. I mean Rachel got favored by shoe, got into nyada over Kurt (despite her bombing what was suppose to be her only audition) left school for a broadway show she got mad at Santana for being the understudy for (even though she screwed up & ended up needing her to cover in one of the shows anyway) then somehow after everything falls apart becomes the teacher for glee club, then gets accepted right back into school....but they couldn’t even let Mercedes have lead in a high school play....Omg I’m sorry I just went on a real rant 😂

Mercedes never practiced her songs before auditioning and such. She was still good but she could do better. I just watched the video of Irene Cara singing this song in the 1980 movie Fame. She freaking killed it. These two awesome, but I highly recommend watching it. Just search the song title and it will come up.
To be honest I thought Rachel sang it better. No, I am not a die hard Rachel fan😒. But it feels like Rachel was more emotionally vested in this song.That is only MY opinion. It's obvious in this scene that everyone thought Mercedes was better, (I mean Emma confirmed it when she breathed a sigh of relief when Rachel didn't throw a tantrum over the double casting deal). It's really a shame that they didn't give her the role because she deserved it. People who say she's a 'mainstream' or 'one-genre' singer are completely wrong, the truth is they never gave her the opportunity to explore other genres and basically boxed her in one category.
lea michele really can't sing in other genres. she really shines in theathrical songs but in pop or rock songs she just sounds out of place, which isn't wrong.

It honestly annoyed me that the only time Mercedes and Rachel got to sing together was during battles and diva offs. They had three duets (only two if you count Defying Gravity as a trio, which it was) but it was always a competition, pitting them against one another.

In my opinion I think rachel is a better singer. Mercedes is an amazing singer don't get me wrong but I feel like anytime I hear rachel singing it just makes me happy especially when she sings and finn is just staring at her which is all the time and any time when rachel sings everyone is shocked and amazed. For some reason I just never really liked Rachels voice or performing. Yes, she is talented, but when I listen to her it just does nothing to me. Mercedes makes me actually feel what she is singing about.
It's because Lea isn't good at acting and singing at the same time. She's always just closing her eyes and looking sad or angry even when it's not appropriate. Seriously count how many time Lea closed her eyes in this video, it's kinda hysterical. EDIT: I went back and counted. Amber closed her eyes 4 times, Lea closed hers 8 times. Eight times and she had barely any screen time. I'm not a drinker but in my head drinking every time Lea closes her eyes while singing is a great drinking game.
My favorite Glee competition performances just happen to be the ones where she isn't singing lead lol the Michael Jackson sectionals & the Sam & Quinn/Santana. I think I just got tired of hearing Rachel sing every episode

I'm not dissing their voices or the song or their performances but a) if you're auditioning for a role in West Side Story you should sing a song from West Side Story. b) Maria is from Puerto Rico, she isn't African-American. c) Rachel's voice is too Broadway-like for the role of Maria, there's a reason why Lea Michele didn't get the role when she auditioned for the role in the 2009 revival, if I were casting the play I'd want to cast someone I know can do a dramatic scene without belting, who can do a softer, just as vulnerable but not overdone performance, especially of a song like 'Somewhere'. If you want a better idea of the type of singer to play Maria look up Cecilia Cara from the 2001 French musical 'Romeo et Juliette, de La Haine a l'Amour' (yes Europe has it's own branch of musicals) Marjan Shaki from the 2005 Austrian production of the aforementioned French Musical version 'Romeo und Julia' and Josefina Scaglione who got the role of Maria in the 2009 revival of 'West Side Story' directed by the man who wrote the libretto for the original play back in the 50s, Arthur Laurents.

I think Mercedes gave it one hell of a try, but she’s not a Broadway star. Rachel has more experience and talent in this department. Rachel sings Ballads and Broadway the best. Conversely, Mercedes would knock her out if this were Pop or Soul.

Both girls here have pretty voices. But the best version of this song is still the original by Irene Cara. Cara's voice is not as smooth as either of these girls, but she was far more emotional and expressive of the teen angst that underlies this song. Look for Cara's version on youtube.

Rachel’s falsetto is not very developed, she is much more of a belter, which inherently is nothing wrong with but crucial for Maria. Mercedes can hit the first soprano a lot better. Even Rachel knew that.

You know what really irritates me? The fact that they make Rachel (Lea) look like the biggest star in the world when she isn't! Lea is very good, talented, but the fact that the entire series has always glorified her, even in moments when she did something wrong, is for me the most unbearable thing in the world. At no point is a person always being glorified a good thing. Always having stupid competitions throughout the series to see who was the best singer was ridiculous, especially because the producers clearly chose the best songs that are perfect for Lea's voice but they clearly didn't look for that in the voices of Amber Riley or Naya Nivera or even Kevin (Artie), who were clearly very good without needing to be glorified for it. The series was supposed to be about equality but in the end it just became another series where the favorite becomes the favored one for the rest of the series... Ryan Murphy didn't deserve the talents he found in the series' cast. This storyline really pissed me off. It’s a great example of how everyone babys Rachel. Yes she’s probably the best singer but that doesn’t mean she should get every lead part and solo ever. Even Rachele herself admitted that Mercedes audition was better, yet they decided to have them both be Maria.

To be honest I thought Rachel sang it better. No, I am not a die hard Rachel fan😒. But it feels like Rachel was more emotionally vested in this song.That is only MY opinion.
It's obvious in this scene that everyone thought Mercedes was better, (I mean Emma confirmed it when she breathed a sigh of relief when Rachel didn't throw a tantrum over the double casting deal). It's really a shame that they didn't give her the role because she deserved it. People who say she's a 'mainstream' or 'one-genre' singer are completely wrong, the truth is they never gave her the opportunity to explore other genres and basically boxed her in one category.
lea michele really can't sing in other genres. she really shines in theathrical songs but in pop or rock songs she just sounds out of place, which isn't wrong.

I agree that in this song, Mercedes did it just a little better. Both have gorgeous voices and killed it, but I'd give Mercedes the edge.
But....that doesn't mean Mercedes was right for the role of Maria over Rachel! This song is so incredible different from Maria's songs and character. If either of them sang this piece, this way, for an actual Maria role they'd both probably be passed over! 🤣🤣🤣

It honestly annoyed me that the only time Mercedes and Rachel got to sing together was during battles and diva offs. They had three duets (only two if you count Defying Gravity as a trio, which it was) but it was always a competition, pitting them against one another.

In my opinion I think rachel is a better singer. For some reason I just never really liked Rachels voice or performing. Yes, she is talented, but when I listen to her it just does nothing to me. Mercedes makes me actually feel what she is singing about.
It's because Lea isn't good at acting and singing at the same time. She's always just closing her eyes and looking sad or angry even when it's not appropriate. Seriously count how many time Lea closed her eyes in this video, it's kinda hysterical. EDIT: I went back and counted. Amber closed her eyes 4 times, Lea closed hers 8 times. Eight times and she had barely any screen time. I'm not a drinker but in my head drinking every time Lea closes her eyes while singing is a great drinking game.
My favorite Glee competition performances just happen to be the ones where she isn't singing lead lol the Michael Jackson sectionals & the Sam & Quinn/Santana. I think I just got tired of hearing Rachel sing every episode

Ok....I'm going to get a lot of hate for this.....but neither of them are Maria. I'm not dissing their voices or the song or their performances but a) if you're auditioning for a role in West Side Story you should sing a song from West Side Story. b) Maria is from Puerto Rico, she isn't African-American. c) Rachel's voice is too Broadway-like for the role of Maria, there's a reason why Lea Michele didn't get the role when she auditioned for the role in the 2009 revival, if I were casting the play I'd want to cast someone I know can do a dramatic scene without belting, who can do a softer, just as vulnerable but not overdone performance, especially of a song like 'Somewhere'. If you want a better idea of the type of singer to play Maria look up Cecilia Cara from the 2001 French musical 'Romeo et Juliette, de La Haine a l'Amour' (yes Europe has it's own branch of musicals) Marjan Shaki from the 2005 Austrian production of the aforementioned French Musical version 'Romeo und Julia' and Josefina Scaglione who got the role of Maria in the 2009 revival of 'West Side Story' directed by the man who wrote the libretto for the original play back in the 50s, Arthur Laurents.

I think Mercedes gave it one hell of a try, but she’s not a Broadway star. Rachel has more experience and talent in this department. Rachel sings Ballads and Broadway the best. Conversely, Mercedes would knock her out if this were Pop or Soul.

Both girls here have pretty voices. But the best version of this song is still the original by Irene Cara. Cara's voice is not as smooth as either of these girls, but she was far more emotional and expressive of the teen angst that underlies this song. Look for Cara's version on youtube.

I came back here to see if I would change my mind on who did better in this call back and I haven’t changed my mind because I’m still of the opinion that Miss Rachel Barbara Barry did the best and I am also still of the opinion that this particular piece was a stupid idea for a callback song because Maria is a pure operatic soprano which again is all the more reason that Rachel was the perfect choice for Maria.

Rachel’s falsetto is not very developed, she is much more of a belter, which inherently is nothing wrong with but crucial for Maria. Mercedes can hit the first soprano a lot better. Even Rachel knew that.

Vocals aren't enough to fit the part for a character. Mercedes did well with this song, but I think overall Rachel was the better fit for Maria.

I think Rachel was the better fit for the character. They were being nice by choosing to let both of them play the character
No they weren`t . They probably already had cast Rachel as the lead in there minds, but they can`t just give her the role hence the audition. Then Mercedes killed it and they realized that they would be called out on there bias. The tell me you were better line was spot on, if Rachel had been better they would have not have double cast.

But why was the same consideration not given to Kurt, who also is applying to a performing arts school. They gave him Office Krupke, the only part in the show that does not sing or dance. Hell Mike Chang got a singing part and he is only interested in dancing.

You know what really irritates me? The fact that they make Rachel (Lea) look like the biggest star in the world when she isn't! Lea is very good, talented, but the fact that the entire series has always glorified her, even in moments when she did something wrong, is for me the most unbearable thing in the world. At no point is a person always being glorified a good thing. Always having stupid competitions throughout the series to see who was the best singer was ridiculous, especially because the producers clearly chose the best songs that are perfect for Lea's voice but they clearly didn't look for that in the voices of Amber Riley or Naya Nivera or even Kevin (Artie), who were clearly very good without needing to be glorified for it. The series was supposed to be about equality but in the end it just became another series where the favorite becomes the favored one for the rest of the series... Ryan Murphy didn't deserve the talents he found in the series' cast. Just the fact that the man downgraded Dianna in favor of Lea because the fandom liked Quinn more than Rachel and also Chris (Kurt) is completely ridiculous. Disgusting man...
