Let's play around with one of my favorite synthesizers. Its unique design, sequencers, and patch capability make it a true gem, even 15 years after its conception.
I love the evolver, I can call myself proud owner of the poly evolver keyboard version, first synth I had and last one I‘ll sell But two things, Dave smith releases synthesizer since 1977, not 2002 and second the evolver has 2 analog oscillators and 2 digital ones…
Hi Benn Can you do another video about the Evolver commenting more the steps of editing a sound.More in depth about sequencing also.Great you tube channel .Bye
I can tell you right now, I will not part from my Evolver for less than the really big bucks. I have a modular and many semi-modular synths, with the Evolver being one of my few non-modular anything. It does pretty much anything my expensive Eurorack can, for a fraction of the price (effects excepting - but buy some pedals, kids!). Sure, I have heard people complain about the sound of the oscillators, which is fine and well but they don't seem to realize the entire audio path through the thing allows it to be used as a PEDAL. So, circumvent the oscillators entirely - feed this analog beast the best complex waveforms you can generate, it will eat it all, and spit out beauty.
Took me a minute to realize why this looks so similar to the Adrenalinn3 pedal... The UI was designed by the same guy! And I'm pretty sure the sequencer functions in it came from this unit, too. They would make a great pair...
I really want you to do video about TB-303. Not about the 303 itself, but rather how you program it on your track, because all 303 sounds on your tracks are really mind blowing.
I own a DSI Mopho and I'm loving it. I've been pondering the idea of getting an Evolver for some time now. You got yours really cheap; I keep find it around 550 $. I guess I'll keep looking. Thanks for the vid and keep doing this. Cheers !
I have been diving deep into this thing for 3 weeks now, here's my take: Most synths are like multi-level building, each floor an oscillator, 2 story is the norm, now take the tetra, it's got 2 stories up and 2 stories underground(sub oscillators) which is groovy, the weird thing about the evolver is it has 2 flats on the left, and 2 on the right, that's the trip. You could think of this as an EA1 2.0, f'ing genius really. Why ea1? It's two monophonic timbres, yeah cool and thin like girl from cali, but what if you set the midi channel of both to the same channel? Why not pan timbre 1 hard left, and timbre 2 hard right, boom, cheap evolver. You think Dave didn't have one of these, didn't mess around with it and see the 'need'? come on...
I'd be curious to here your opinion on the electribes. I've been using the emx -1 esx-1 for almost ten years, and find the functionality to be almost as prominent and powerful to that of my elektron. The new electribes just dont cut it for me. I wish they put 8 bars in them like the old ones. I dont understand why they went backwards on the amount measures.
Really enjoying the video's so far!!! Would be awesome to see more quirky stuff like this that i wouldn't come across otherwise. Also not sure if you have one but would be very interested in a Buchla (music easel) video
Thanx for sharing! Love the Evolver. Just one question: Since I hear a lot of demos showing off the presets. Maybe I overloooked the manual, but how do you start a initial preset...so you can start building from scratch? (The manual is more of a explanation and not a step by step tutorial on how to do things) Thanx in advance!
There is no initialization feature on the Evolver; however, page 8 of this document shows you how to create an init patch: www.carbon111.com/evolverguide.pdf. Lots of other good stuff in this guide too.
Hey dude, nice video. Would it be possible to share the presets? I got mine just lately second hand, and I would be delighted to have some usable patches.
Question: It seemed like you were modulating your sequencer speed. I can't seem to route my modulation that way. Is that what was going on? Also, any way to make a pitch-based sequencer offset to the key pressed? Ie maybe I program in a C-min arp, but if I play an F, it plays an F-min arp?
WHO created the prophet 5 ? Dave smith first synth the evolver ?? !!! That hurts really. Please do some homework. I feel like stopping the video right now. But I owned an evolver for years. So let’s listen what he has to say

These sequences are beautiful !!! respect
Two analog oscillators and two digital oscillators....not one and three.
I love DSI Evolver. If I had to sell all and keep one synth... would be Evolver!
The synth force is strong in you sir
Great review, and I want one of these now, just the sort of sound and complex routing i love.

You'd fall asleep. :P
I DO want to do one where I create a 303 style sequencer using addressed switches and logic gates though.
Great video!
Love the Peanuts Christmas + Dog smash-cut.
When u set different lengths to the 4 sequences and really use those 3 delay engines it starts to “Evolve”
Nice real-ass table dude. One-uppance!
Also thanks, I've wanted to hear more of this thing since I first laid eyes

I got mine new on clearance at Sweetwater. How lucky is that?

still surprises me

I will do an AMC pilot series shot on 35mm Panavision wide screen film about it if Buchla wants to send me a music easel.
@@BennJordan lmao
This inspired me to hook up some pattern sequencers to the Europa synth in Reason to see what would happen. It's kind of trance-inducing.
It has two analouge osc and two digital
KeithCanisius also Dave Smith's first synthesizer!? Yes under the DSI brand but he forgets to mention Sequential Cituits which is ridiculous!
Such a shame u cut the jam that starts in 08:00, it's soo good!!! I wanted to listen to it play longer
I already wanted one before this video XD your presets sounds awesome
Man I wish these weren’t so damn expensive.
700-800 clams on the used market, might be worth it I’m still deciding but the instrument is so damn unique
Amazing performance dude! :)
I do like your dog.
your vids r great bc of your varied skill set.
I sold all my synths except for my four oscillator, four lfo and etc mastermind synth.
excellent demo many thanks !
That wasn't his first synth he was the founder of sequential circuits.
You're right. This was the first DSI synth. I should have been more specific.
I think he meant to say, Dave’s first solo project synth :)
"In 2002 Dave Smith released his first synth ever..."
Man, do you have any idea who Dave Smith is? Prophet 5?
You got got.
And Dave Smith was involved in the production of the legendary KORG Wavestation too ;-)
great jam

That's one dusty xr20 :o
I remember seeing this in magazines when I was a kid.....”wtf is this thing and who the hell is dave smith?!” lol
Gonna need that first patch! Get a Patreon up with these patches dude my wallet is ready!!!
Great sound..❤️❤️❤️
You should put deesser on your voice track 😂😂😂
LOLed so hard...”I invented fucking MIDI”
Please make the voice-over lower, so it is possible to the volume up, for synthsounds, without getting frigthened everytime you speak :P
Are you familiar with the Yamaha AN1X? It's a pretty unique VA, quite fun.
It has 2 digital and 2 analog osc
And the digital “waveforms” can be replaced with your own
Best synth ever
A dickweed sold mine
It’s v

can you/anyone explain how i can use the sequencer to sequence the sequencer as described @ 7:26? just got this piece a couple days ago
i thought the evolver had 2 analog and 2 digital ocs?
I'm going travelling and I want analogue on the road. Do you have giant hands or is this really tiny?
Cool dog!
I like your Dog
Who has more bragging rights at a party...Dave Smith...Eric Persing...Or Roger Linn???
Vincent Salamatino who cares they’re all different
Tom Oberheim has a say, too

Benn and Gear Excellent! Cheers!!
You couldn't really call the Evolver Dave Smith's First synth he had don some before synths like the Prophet 5, Pro one, Prophet T8, Prophet VS...
2:15 aaahh need that patch! pls
Hey ...
Any more tutorials ? For this ...
Sunny I hope he does another as well.
I've detuned mine to hell it never came back not even the four sequencers could it back.
Another good video. Subbed!
I like ur dog.
😊✌✌
I got the Pro 3 and returned it, after realizing it is little more than a repackaging of the Evolver that sounds nowhere near as good.
they certainly arn't going for 300 dollars anymore
Wish there was another synth similar to the evolver.
Wonder if the Korg Wavestate had any similarity?
@@JustDatBoi I'm not sure, thr hydra synth is good bang for your buck do it all digital synth
He wouldn’t say FUKING MIDI
