GAMISM: Is Simlish A Real Language?

- In the seminal game The Sims, Simlish was invented as a language for Sims to speak to each other in, fairly unintelligible to the human ear but enjoyable all the same
This vid explores whether or not Simlish is actually a real language: I talk about the concepts of conlang; pidgin and creole - and we look at the origins of Simspeak (how it was created etc).

OMG! Another fellow Simlish nerd who sings in Simlish just like me! Love your video and can definitely appreciate a random ramble on Simlish 🥰😍! I love Simlish, especially the Simlish songs! Have you ever sung a whole song in Simlish? The Sims created a Simlish singing challenge on RUclips called #singitinsimlishchallenge. I thoroughly enjoyed your rendition of Lass Frooby Noop 🤗. I find it fascinating how The Sims 4 filled in so many gaps in Simlish from previous games and made it significantly more consistent. There is a huge word list they go from in The Sims 4 compared to earlier games that the voice actors use and that the voice director uses to translate all the songs into Simlish! The Maxis Audio Department has finally done more interviews, podcasts, and reveals about their Simlish process in recent years. I am just here gobbling up all the Simlish info I can! Instant sub! Thanks for the Simlish content! :D
Yes!!! I’m so glad you liked it ♥️love your comment and the info. Never sung a song in Simlish, wish I could lol. Will check out the interviews too, I’d love to hear more about their process. thank you for watching🌹
A fascinating ‘conversation’, in that I find myself responding with connected thoughts…
It seems similar to the minions language, obviously with different words, but the same limited vocabulary only created for specific words or phrases. Super cool, I would love to see these languages develop further, like how Klingon came from Star Trek.
yes that is a good comparison actually 🤔 let’s see if it evolves 🌹
I could listen to her speak gibberish to me for hours 😔
great video! this goes rather in depth
haha yeah it does rather ! Glad you liked it anyway
I find myself talking in sim sometimes, usually when I'm bored. Lol. Your drawings are cool. Keep up the great work. 👍
🌹
Wow Very Nice Video
The Sims approach to language is bizarre... I always read "Simlish" as American, because in the absence of semantic information, only intonation remains. But then... they added Sim-Japanese. Which, despite being just as gibberish as regular Simlish, and despite still seeming to be spoken by Americans, genuinely does sound like Japanese in the same way that Simlish sounds like American. I'd love to know what goes on at Maxis when it comes to this, there must be someone there who really cares about language. I'd also love to see Sims feature voice actors from a variety of native accents, all speaking Simlish, to see what differences arise in for example English Simlish or German Simlish.
Great comment. I personally think the usual Simlish sounds more like a cross between Dutch / Danish / US English (?) , agree it would be great to hear what the linguists on the Maxis team have to say on the subject 🌹👌
As someone who's never played a sims game, but is interested in linguistics, my guess for how this is achieved would be by imitating the phonology and phonotactics of the language. Essentially, every language has a certain set of sounds, and restrictions on how those sounds can be combined. By following those rules while making up gibberish, the 'sound' of the language can be preserved even if the words themselves are meaningless.
@@artilleryfire1 I think that probably forms the basis, but it must go beyond that because simlish words don't just sound like made-up English words. For example, I don't think I've ever heard a simlish word end in -ing, which would presumably be pretty common if they were following the rules of English word assembly.
I don't know. I bought the Sims 3 in 2011: The Beatles tunes also featured, when my Sim was learning how to play the guitar. Then the game developers Maxix were cracked down upon because players were doing things like Swmming Pool Drowning competitions and other bads things with Sims toddlers. Sims 4 was a much dumbed down affair. I did'nt buy it. Sims 5. Vaporware at this stage. " Veebee Ley "
Sims 5…. Bring it on :) Veebee ley 😋
A little unintelligible language.. like Danish?🤣🤣
Dont joke about Danish! Its a very serious throat condition!
