They changed the leather a few years ago and it went worse. Not a good one to be honest. I'll love for you to compare it vs other brands
surprisingly my first case (green, bought at the same time as a backup black case) held up way better than the second one
It used to be made out of Horween leather. Then Apple decided to go another direction unfortunately.

This is one thing I learned a long time ago. I used to work for one of the big cellular companies for years. Most of the Apple accessories are high priced junk, from their cables to their cases.
Yes! Apple discontinued leather products with the introduction of the iPhone 15. Would like you to do other brands. One I see a lot is bullstrap.
Had my apple leather case since I purchased my 12 pro. I don’t clean it, but it has cracked in 1 spot.
I have a Bullstrap case and I love it. Full grain, and they stand by their warranty.

For anyone wanting an actual good leather case dbrand make an excellent one. Their grip case has interchangeable skins for the back and one of the skins they offer is veg tanned leather. I have been using mine for years and care for it like boots having to clean and oil it once in a while. The great thing about their cases is if you ever get sick of the skin you have you can just peel it off and buy a new one. The case itself is extremely durable on its own with clicky buttons and a sturdy body. The leather is really nice but doesn't wrap around the phone it only applies to the back and the case protects the edges so the leather will last for a long time. Oh and it's the same price as Apple's but it's well worth it in my opinion.

Apple have discontinued leather accessories. They replaced them with items made of something called “finely woven”. Feedback on this material has been so bad that they’ve now abandoned that material too. I’m not sure what material they will use next.

+1 for dbrand leather skin for the grip case. Fairly high protection and grips in your hand. Also flattens the camera bump on Samsung phones so it doesnt rock back and forth on the table. As good as it is, would still desire even better and more leather all around. Would love to see more cases reviewed and cut in half, etc. dont forget there is a metal or magnetic "shank" in alot of these cases now for magsafe functionality. Should be fun to see the innards of them.

When I got my iPhone 14 a little over a year ago, I bought one of the silicon Apple cases. It lasted about 3 months before it started distintegrating. I replaced it with a Speck case, and after 8 months that one is just beginning to show any wear. I've had really good luck with Speck cases over many years and several phones, in fact.

you should check out Toast cases. It's a real wood wrap (with leather backplate option) that you stick onto your phone. not as protective as the plastic/rubber ballistic style cases, but still pretty protective. I've been using them for several years now.

As a big watch nerd, I would LOVE to see you compare, dissect and grade the leather and construction of some leather watch straps. I'm especially interested in seeing if self-proclaimed "luxury" straps brands such as Delugs or Hodinkee, selling straps for >$150 made in asia with a ridiculous markup, hold up against community favorites independent artisans from Etsy selling handmade saddle stitched straps made from Horween, Epsom, Butero, Pueblo, Badalassi leathers etc. at a third of the price.
Yes yes. Please help me find the perfect leather case. I can't afford to just try them all and see what's best, but I'd still like to find a good quality leather case with great buttons, large charging port hole or open bottom, but all the sides have to be covered and there must be at least a small lip of protection around the display for face down drops. Plus all the great things we expect from a leather that ages well. I know it's a lot to ask for, but they charge a lot for these things, especially for what they are.
I have one from Apple, and one from Andar. The latter is definitely nicer.
If you're hard on your gear, the Apple stuff won't last very well. I'm soft on my gear, and my Umber color Apple leather case for my 14Pro looked pretty good after a year of use. I got the Andar brand case in grey, but my hand oils darkened it up quite a bit. It does seem to be thicker leather and just overall better quality.
Years ago I got a leather case for the iPhone 6, it was a beige-ish pink but turned pretzel brown in about 6 weeks, never again.
Current using Nomad's Horween leather case. I'd say it's held up pretty good compared to the Sandmarc leather case which I used before. It damaged my phone after one drop and the case itself didn't survive.
I'm a leatherworker and I make mostly leather phone cases.
While I don't know know the leather used by Apple, the reason why it wears so fast is because of your usage. You have shown your "rough" handling of leather items. I have dissected Apple leather case and measured the thickness of the leather, it's about 0.6mm (new, not used). Why so thin? That's because of the combined thickness as it's fully wrapped from outer to the inner side (meaning 0.6 + plastic frame (1mm~) + 0.6). Moreover, the leather needs to be thin so that it can be wrapped properly on the plastic frame.
Considering the thinness, the leather case isn't meant to be used like how you use your work boots but like a bespoke dress shoe. It's a handheld art and supposed to be handled delicately.
I bet that if you use leather cases from other brands (Bellroy, Nomad, Mujjo) the same way, it's gonna be worn off the same way.

I had an Apple leather case on my iPhone 6 back in the day. I used it for 2-3 years, and while took some beating, it was no where close to the level seen here. Perhaps they use cheaper leather now or something, I'm not sure. However, I do agree that the plastic they used was thin and cheap. The buttons and ports were fine, but the corners disintegrated until the case would barely stay on and which is why I ultimately had to replace it. It always looked and felt great though (never felt slippery like silicone cases).

Tried the Bellroy leather case. Same issues, aside from not actually breaking, but looked awful.
Another accessory I've struggled to find in good leather is a kindle case, so I'd love an exploration of that as well.
Which model did you have? I looked at reviews for the pixel 7 case and it wasn't reviewed very well but the pixel 6 was much better according to reviews.
Definitely need a Rose Anvil iPhone case. Since they moved to the plastic finewoven nonsense I’ve been using the Nomad Horween case, would love a review of that.
The older apple leather cases, pre iPhone 12 or so were much better. And then something changed drastically a year or two ago. I've been buying cases from Nomad Goods for the past few years and they hold up great and patina really well. 10/10
Grab a mous case. They have decent backing options. The benefit is their protection and durability. I’ve had one on my last three phones and pry the only reason i never shattered them.
I don't think their really can be a decent leather case, but their are lots of great leather skins. You can even make one yourself with whatever leather you want and double sided stitching tape. It sticks great (did for my Samsung phones at least), and peels off without leaving residue if you want to change it.
Reminds me of the "alcantara" case i got for a samsung phone years ago. it felt really nice for the first 3 weeks, then it all wore off and became an overpriced smooth phone case after that.
If it was actually alcantara, it probably didn't wear down as much as it just 'clogged' with dirt and oils from your hands.
Same thing happens with cars that use alcantara on touch points (steering wheel/shift knob/bolster) and it can be cleaned to be brought back.
But really it's just a terrible material for anything high touch.

I’d love to find a decent leather case. I had the same issues with my leather Apple case, and the second one I bought after they discontinued it turned out to be a knockoff.
If your goal was just to have leather, and not protection, you could do the leather dbrand skin. Based on your current case, i don't think it would survive you though...

I purchased a leather iphone case from Nomad, I paid the extra money for Horween leather ($70 total), and it's been great for me. I've had it for about a year now. That's the one I'd recommend if someone were looking.
I had the apple leather case for my iPhone and mine ended up like Weston’s after a year and looked gross, I literally got the nomad one about a week ago and love it already, glad to know yours lasted so long hopefully mine does the same

ive seen a few videos of people wet molding their own leather cases. wild leather, saddleback, and black beard have their own takes on it. way better than apple and actually looks durable. that would be a cool rose anvil builds video tbh
Mine has held up ok. But I’m sure there is better out there for cheaper. I like the slim fit and feel in the hand.

Nomad cases are a great alternative in my opinion with Horween leather on select iPhone models
I have one of those and do like it, However, the leather is thin and can damage easily. Additionally, the adhesive tape will fail and require a stronger glue to keep it down. Both problems are easily fixed.
I like leather but I bought an Otterbox case for 13. Still in good shape.

I'm not sure about a leather case but I use the Mous wood case and it's great. I definitely think it's competitive for that price point and look.

(In all seriousness google pixel, with a custom rom is the best option i know of for phones, if you dont want to use apple or google software)
Apple dropped leather a while ago. The replacement is some stupid fabric that absorbs dirt and oil like a sponge.
