  • Metro Vancouver is installing new technology at the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant with the power to turn liquid waste into jet fuel!
It’s called hydrothermal liquefaction (or HTL for short), and it creates high-quality, low- carbon, renewable fuel that can be used in airplanes, container ships, trains and trucks.
Metro Vancouver’s HTL project will not only reduce the amount of biosolids that we will need to apply to land, it also provides a circular approach to creating fuel from the carbon that is already circulating in our environment. Unlike fossil fuels, using the bio-crude does not change the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Globally, hydrothermal liquefaction promises huge benefits for wastewater management, transportation, and the fight against climate change. And Metro Vancouver is leading the way, with the world’s first scaled-up facility using municipal wastewater to create biocrude.
Metro Vancouver is a diverse organization that plans for and delivers regional utility services, including water, sewers and wastewater treatment, and solid waste management. It also regulates air quality, plans for urban growth, manages a regional parks system, provides affordable housing, and serves as a regional federation. The organization is a federation of 21 municipalities, one electoral area, and one treaty First Nation located in the region of the same name. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors of elected officials from each member jurisdiction. www.metrovancou...
