  • If you want to shape freestyle there are a few rules that you should follow to maximize your success. Most blanks are designed to be shaped from the bottom to the deck so it is best to do most of your shaping off the bottom. Look at it this way and the flow should naturally fall into place just like the blank designer planned.

When teaching new DIY shapers I always say don't get caught up in the numbers...water doesn't know numbers... it's about flow. What looks right to your eyes and feels good in your hands is always a fun to ride board for the creator . Nice work once again Matt. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Matt whats the secret to crosscutting and not nicking the stringer. I like it for adjusting the rocker but I do get some chunkers sometimes. Love your videos. Thank you.

If you hit the stringer straight on, it will chunk it. I cross the stringer at a 45 degree angle which really helps reduce the splintering of the stringer. It rarely happens on a 45 degree cut

Do you shape prone paddleboards ever?

Why don't just thin the bottom more vs adding more rocker? I would just plane to rough thickness on the bottom, and THEN adjust rocker only if needed. More is not good if the blank already has a good rocker. Now If too flat you would know. Arakawa blanks are usually right on. I wouldn't have added anything else on it, buy maybe I very minor nose tip thinning. Can't tell on the tail. Looks a wee bit flat, but I'd take a rocker stick to it.

In this case, equal cuts off the bottom to get my center thickness would end up too thin in the nose. It's always a balancing act to find the right plan of attack

I meant just remove the layers w out adding more rocker - in nose? Like I said, I can't tell on the tail rocker? Then I would think bit of foil on deck to thin nose / tail.

The natural rockers are very low for Hawaiian waves so adding rocker is a must. Adding rocker also makes it easy to thin it at the same time

@@kazumasurfboards oh, ok. Sounds good. I shaped on a arakawa gun blank and I left rocker as is cos It looked good. Tail rocker was prob fine, but I cut in rocker to help seat my drop in... It seems to go well during a winter swell.

@@kazumasurfboards you sure the rocker is too low for Hawaiian wave's? I don't agree - cos Arakawa is a Hawaiian wave's shaper. I would say you just like a lotta rocker. I mean, I don't think Arakawa would be making his rocker too low.

how can you see in that room? so much ping ponging light

Over the years I have gravitated towards lighter color walls with more light because it reduces eye fatigue. It is the only way that I could spend so many hours in this room and not feel exhausted afterwards. The contrast and shadows are still very good.

@UCNIcRN4lI0GYB2_pmzJOnfw I like your concept and when you flatten the center while leaving the rail line with curve you can get the benefits of a fast (flatter) rocker with the good turning of a higher rocker on the rail line. It would be rare for me to have a true flat part on the rocker but the rocker bar should balance the same for yours and my bottom.

Kazuma Kinoshita Surfboards thanks Mat got you 100%! Mat I have never used Tints pigments but have used flat colours. Question : is it possible to get a tint effect using solid flat pigments by just using less in the resin ? or is it better to buy tints to get a clear tint coloured effect on boards?. I am thinking of making up my own bottle green eg. for my next fish. My previous fish above I just used solid flat red and yelow swirl and it looks great with a slight translucent look but I imagine nothing works better than a real tint colour? hope to get some from the supplier who is far from me.
