  • What saved our butts this year...
Last year was record low rainfall.
Some farms fed hay all year.
Many are buying very expensive hay now.
We reduced the herd and were able to graze through December.
We store good quality hay from previous years in reserve.
Half a winters worth kept as a rolling inventory surplus on good years.
Completely saved us from having to destock or buy expensive hay this winter.

Good show. Sorry I couldn’t attend your seminar this year but I’m sure many farmers/ homesteaders learned a lot of useful techniques.

Spreading some cereal rye on your pasture can help supplement a little once it gets growing because it grows in colder weather better than anything else. Doing this would mean you not only don't have to move huge round bales but you improve your pastures too.

    Good luck.
    Fewer cattle this year?
