Having seen a live performance of this recently I was intrigued by what the cellos were doing at the start. The score only shows part of the story. The visual impact of the thumbs playing the A flat and the fourth finger stretching to play the harmonic is quite extraordinary.
Literally, "The apprentice sorcerer." Based on an original idea by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. And how many times have I enjoyed this music, ever since, as a 4 year old, I first watched "Fantasia?" Dukas, an interesting fellow, destroyed much of his music, evidently judging it "unsatisfactory," Among the survivors is his exquisite ballet, "La Peri," a special favorite. As a bonus, you get a seemingly unrelated fanfare.
At 2:30 one can CLEARLY hear Holst's Neptune as well as some "Fingal's Cave " strains by Mendelssohn

It's impossible not to love this piece.

It's that motive for the cornet at 8:10 that makes me come back to this piece every few weeks
Amazing the GOD level of orchestration by Dukas 🎉❤
