Just had to dig my little juvenile T. vagans out of their enclosure for a rehouse. Got an adorable full threat pose that honestly made me laugh more than anything. I’m sure they were summoning demons with all that evil.
OMG I got so excited to see this!! My t. Vagans is about to go to her last re house and she is big and I am a bit nervous lol. I always gave her some depth to borrow and she has made some awesome caves.she can definitely be defensive but i love her. Can't wait to see how yours does. ❤
I'm so glad, Rochelle! I know that I get a lot of folks asking me for updates on them. When yours is defensive, does it kick hairs or threat posture? Thank you!

@@bgreen5234 thank you for asking 😊. a. geniculata (1”) and t. albopilosum (3/4”) from fear not tarantulas!! ive been researching and planning for over two years to get them and finally for my 30th birthday it’s happening ☺️ im a little nervous about the initial unboxing, but im prepared and really looking forward to it! i’ll be getting some blue death feigning beetles as well.
@@terrapintelyn I have those as well. My first unboxing was a 1/3 inch B. Hamorii. I was so scared. It took me about an hour to get it in the enclosure. I own 10 now, that fear has since disappeared. You’re going to love the A. Geniculata, very hardy eater, never turns down a meal. My little guy is feisty, it’s already kicking little hairs lol. Are you getting any more?
Tom, I gotta thank you as always for creating such a lovely space in the hobby. You are always a delight, I particularly enjoyed your podcasts when I had a long commute. At any rate, I need a place to squeal with delight into the void. I put off getting a vagans and a gbb for a year because of their reputations. I did not take into account the sheer strength of my inner Italian Nana. My reaction to both of them is, these good kids. They are the perfect Italian grandchildren. They eat whatever is put in front of them. (Unless they are in premolt.) They now have their own little stories because of course. Vinny is the one who is always late to Sunday dinner but gets forgiven because he cleans his plate. He brings Nano a gallon jug of Carlo Rossi red wine and a tin of almond roca. He brings Nana flowers. He always helps her clear the table and dry and put away the dishes. (She likes washing - the hot water helps her arthritis.) Tony moved back into the garage when his girlfriend cheated on him, and is the baby of the family, so he gets forgiven when he takes his plate back to his room. 😂😂😂 I stg. After dumping way too many fruit flies in with Tony the tiny vagans, five minutes later, he was hiding in his burrow with a pea sized ball of fruit flies in his mouth. And the gbb… he just sits resplendent on his webbing and snatches the crickets nearly out of the air as I’m dropping them in. I am madly in love with these tiny spiders because they eat well. 😂😂😂 I will never not be amused by this. That’s all. I’ve said it before and you’ve ignored me, but I’ll say it again, because you already give us so much. No need to respond, you are a busy guy with so much to do, and I don’t want to add to that. I just appreciate having a place to yell about liking tarantulas. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Lowlee! I truly appreciate that! I'm so glad that you were able to get by their reputations and try them out for yourselves. And thank you for such an amazingly entertaining comment! haha
Beautiful spider ! That was easy as far as rehouses go. I'm actually amused that she decided to flick hairs after she had a run around her new home. I did not expect the burst of speed, it wouldn't really bother me anyways. It's one of these Ts I definitely want to enjoy later on. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
She's so beautiful! My T. Vagans is my first Tarantula and he is very chill, tiny sling, he molted into his colors and I love him so much. He's skittish but he rather hide in his little house than flick hair. He's a great eater too, and gentle Thank you for sharing your video!
I’m discreetly rocking a Suspiria shirt in my last video too! I swear we need to start discussing our outfits in advance. I don’t own a T.vagans but as ever, great to see you debunking the reputation. People still don’t believe me when I tell them my S.calceatum is an absolute sweetheart but what can you do but share your honest experience? We can only add our voices to oppose the sensationalism. Keep up the good work mate.
GET OUT OF MY HEAD, ADAM! hahaha Hey, what you can you say? We both obviously have awesome tastes in movies. I still have to get an S. calciatum for that very reason. As for these guys, I just find it irritating that the first thing that pops up when you search them is that "evil" crap. How about you learn how to keep and you won't have evil spiders? ;) Thanks bud!
As always, Tom, great video. I glad you talk about temperaments. And I agree, I check mine a few times a day and my T. vagans can be a bit skittish. But she was very calm when I rehoused her. You should see her tunnels. It goes from one corner diagonally to another and she stuffed a bunch of substrate next to a small piece of bark and has one in that also. Amazing feeding response too. I don't consider myself an expert on spiders, far from it, but now so much more comfortable around them. T's moods vary every day. One day it's looks like smoked some bud, the next day, they are hanging off the walls. My Grammastola's are almost always chill but on the other end of the spectrum of intense attitude and posturing is my Nhandu and my recent acquisition Theraphosa stermi. Also, I think when a person is calm and has everything ready, rehousings are not that bad. Hey, Billie, lovely shot btw of the T. vagans, I love the color contrast from black and red. Have a great weekend you two!
Hey, Linda! Yours sounds amazing! And the varying moods is a VERY important point; just because your spider is laid back one day doesn't mean that it will be the next. Folks always need to be aware of that. And when they DO act out, it is NOT out of malice. That notion is just idiotic. Thanks so much for commenting, and we hope that you are having a great weekend!
I know this is a little bit off topic...But do you still have the pair of Pink Zebra Beauty tarantulas?? Also, have you ever shopped at Great Basin Serpentarium?
I got 3 of my pink zebra beauties from them about 2 summers ago. All still alive and doing well. About 3" across now. Actually re-housing them and a 4th pink zebra this weekend. Still haven't been able to see them from molts yet. They usually ruin them before I can get it out to check it 🙄
Bro when people ask what’s the scientific name of my Nicaraguan curly i always get tongue tied 😂, love your videos and I’ve learned so much from you 👍🫶🕷️
Great video Tommy Boy! I have a male a little smaller than her that is very skittish and lives underground. I also have a female about 3" that is very calm and lives above ground. Not bad for the most dangerous spider! This is going to be hard to explain without pictures but I'll try: Being cheap "home made" enclosures are my choice. Securing the lids can end up being just at expensive as the enclosure you're trying to fix up. I use "brass cup hooks" 1&1/4" works the best. Drill a hole up high on the wall of the enclosure, feed the hook through, drill a hole where it touches the lid. Once you get the hang of it you can get the hooks in and out without issue. Dremel off the threads and you have yourself a very cheap, secured lid. I use 4 depending on the size of the enclosure. Hope that made sense! 😅
@@TomsBigSpiders No sir you are no longer able to stack. I did it in an effort to get away from stacking, I wanted to be able to see in from the top. I'm sure you could modify where you drill your holes, or just have the top enclosure of the stack with the rings as the weight SHOULD keep the others in their enclosures.
As usual, as I get a new species, I check your channel and find amazing info about the new roommate! And I tend to translate the info to a friend of mine who is also into collecting T's but can't understand a word in english. Cheers from Mexico!
hey tom, I just picked up 8 of these after losing my female a while back. Glad to see an update on yours, this is probably my favorite beginner species and my go to when people ask me what I recommend as a first spider. Hope to see more updates on yours as they progress, I realized I have a thing for big black spiders with those reddish hairs on their bum!
Hi Tom & Mrs Tom, hope you’re both well and enjoying your weekend. Lovely seeing the Mexican Red Rump, they’re striking looking Tarantulas, and a lot bigger than The Hamorii (adult size) Smooth rehouse into a very nice looking setup. Informative and interesting video Tom. Thanks for sharing. Take care and enjoy the rest of your Saturday 💙💕🕷️
Thanks so much, George! Yeah, we've yet to have someone say that theirs is evil in the comments. Thanks so much for chiming in with your experience! :)
My T. vagans (my first, and so far only, T that I've had hook out) was a massive burrower and is the current record holder for tarantula that has stayed closed off in its burrow for the longest, 4 months or so. He was pretty defensive and definitely more inclined to throw a threat posture than to kick, but also really quick with its feeding response and was very rewarding to catch out.
I have a T. vagans sling currently that’s right at an inch. I won’t say it’s mean, or evil. But the way it moves about it’s enclosure reminds me of a t that commands respect 😂
Such and underrated sp I have a sling called Vinny my partner bred and a Tliltocatl sp tortuguero saf that is basically a pimped up vagans named after the one and only Betty Page 😊 probably the most chilled spoods in my collection gotta love a vagans ❤ Great upload, as always you 2, looking forward to the next upload they make my day 😊
Hey Tom hope you’re all well. Another great video and a super species which I have a couple of and they’ve never given me any issues. I have to point out again the calculation with sizes of enclosures. I know you guys generally work in inches but as I’m from the uk we tend to use MM and cm. It’s 2.5 cm to the inch. Take care buddy.
UGHHHHHH! Thank you once again, bud. I must have done something and screwed up my templates. I caught one of them when I was going back through it, but I missed the other one. THANK YOU for looking out for me!
Love my little vagans sling. Couple molts in now and it's about an inch dls. Super chill most of the time but skittish, decent eater. Can't wait for it to really put on some size!
perfect timing, my t. vagans is due for a rehouse after her last molt. her name is spicy, not because of her personality; but because when i got her as a freebie from fear not tarantulas, she was so small she ended up being housed in a travel size spice container :D
Great video as always, I had one of these as a sling but sadly lost it in a bad molt very small (less than 1/2") and am hoping to get another soon. As a side note, I searched for mDesign closet storage boxes and they may be available through Target!
@@TomsBigSpiders I only just noticed the price and it matches the one on your Amazon link. I don't know why I thought your video said they weren't available anymore, at all! That was my mistake!
T. vagans! This is the first I've heard about them being "evil", mine is a "sweetheart". She used to have a burrow, but she filled it in. :O She also really loves her water dish, though looking at your set up, I think I need to get her a larger one. ;_; I've actually gotten pictures (terrible pictures) of her drinking. :)
Great video tom i love my vagans and i know a couple of people with big collections who still count them as one of the best . It's that far feeding response and will power that peoole like about them .
@@tarantularamblings3149 I LOVE watching mine eat. I was trying to grab her water bowl with tongs the other night, and she bolted all the way across the enclosure at me! haha
My first tarantula is a T Vagans. They were quite the little bulldozer when I first got them. They’re about 4 inches now and still love expanding out their burrow as much as possible. They’re getting their final rehouse soon because there’s no more room for them to dig lol.
I'd like to see more Tliltocatl species Definitely we need a Tliltocatl blow out this genus is so underrated. Thanks Tom! Excellent information as always. BTW do you have a T. schroederi I've noticed that this species has become more popular. Again thanks for the information.
Great video as always Tom, I love vagans, have a female about same size as yours, a small juvi, grown on which I'm suspecting as male just now, yes, they can have their moments, defensive, food orientated, and a little skittish but still a stunning T, I do find the kahlenbergi has a slightly calmer disposition but still wouldn't be without my vagans.
Hey, Sean! Thank so much for chiming in about the behavior you see. This one is probably the most skittish of the three I've kept, but she's completely manageable. The idea that the species as a whole is super defensive is silly to me. I definitley have to get a kahlenbergi! Thanks again!
@@TomsBigSpiders Totally agree, I've only had threat postures around the molting time, pre and post, most of the time my girl.....when she's not tucked in her burrow, sits at the entrance, does a bit of mooching and looks amazing, just another one of those that requires a little understanding.
So out of curiosity what subject do you teach? My fiance and I have been watching your channel and listening to your podcast for awhile now and have used the information to have got our first few tarantulas. We've had them for a year now and have always discussed what we thought you teached.
Hello! I'm a high school special education teacher. I have a background in English, so I'm currently teaching literacy classes for both special education and general education students.
One of my favourite genus of tarantulas and T.vagans is so underrated in my opinion. Absolute wonderful spider. By the way, in this genus is my personal favourite, my girl "Pepper",my old big femalen Tliltocatl verdezi ,she is my sweetheart in my collection. ❤ But Tliltocatl vagans is also a beautiful tarantula and I don't understand the "bad reputation" in the hobby at all!
Love the name Pepper! Yes, they are fantastic spiders. Sadly, some folks like to produce videos with lurid titles to attract viewers. One of them was about how evil theres was. Thanks again, bud!
Great video as always Tom and I have to say I absolutely adore this spieces,I firstly had a juvi which molted out Male and had him 3 years after maturing he meant alot to me.ive been raising a sling, and I also have a young female. Yes they are a little high strung but that is just there personality, they are a little skittish, but at the same time they are quite bold.and I agree after a molt they look amazing.they are just amazing when it comes to food.aggressive no great personality yes.
Hello, James! I agree with you completely in that they can be a bit more "spirited" than other new world species. Thanks so much for chiming in with your experiences!
T. Vagans is a great species. I received one as a freebie some months back and while I was a bit hesitant at first, I grew to love her. Mine is skittish and prefers to remain underground most of the time, but has a pretty good feeding response and when I rehoused her she was incredibly calm with no threat pose, hair kicking or even stress pose. Absolute sweety with a big bright red booty.
Hey Tom off topic question but I know ur good about replying I was reading about DKS and mold came up several times do the mean mold in the air or around the area they are in or mold in the enclosure?
So, long story short...when folks first started talking about DKS many years ago, no one was really sure what was causing it. I'm sure that some keeper's spider exhibited signs, he saw some mold, and thought, "Well, it may be caused by mold!". In this case, the thought was that the mold in the enclosure caused it. As time has gone on, I haven't heard of a single case where mold could be the cause of it. Usually, it's some type of exposure to chemicals, pesticides (either in the air, substrate, or on the keeper's hands), or fumes from chemicals.
@TomsBigSpiders I agree the more I have been reading on it sorry for all the questions just want to be prepared for when I get my first T I appreciate it all the time you have taken to reply!
I too didn't pay mind to this species but when they hit my radar they hit it hard I am the proud owner of 5 T vagans slings and 6 of their cousins T albo's. I absolutely love my red rump tarantulas and all Tiltocatl species.
Awesome that vagans, bought one ended up a male but such a pleasure, I bought another hopefully female, but still have male and he is a very nice tarantula to own ,well recommended
Don't worry Billie is safe, you're T. Vagans is a *man* eater!!! I'm sure you know, every critter has their own personality, so yours seems to be a sweetheart! Even critters that are supposed to be mean can be very different with another person. I had a family tell me once, their cat espically hates women and everyone besides her family. I went in and sat down, and the cat jumped in my lap, started purring, curled up and went to sleep, lol! Being a native Missourian, we are known as the show me state and I'm no different. As I'm fond of saying, take each critter and person as an individual because we just never know. I agree T's are not evil, some people definitely but not T's or other animals!!!!! Btw, you T. Vagans is beautiful!!!!!!!!
Hey Tom and Billie! This is unrelated to the video, but I have a question regarding insecticide and pet Ts. Family members are really bothered by insects (mites ect.) And they want to use repellant when outside, and spray for things when inside (we travel for work so we end up living out of extended stay hotels and sometimes would like to spray because....hotels) Is there anything that is "safe" for my pets? I heard mint can deter bugs, but wasn't sure if it would actually work, or harm my pets. Could you (and/or Billie) shed some light on this? Thanks from a traveling Healthcare worker
@@Mercedes_may The "evil" reputation is created by folks who either don't get animal behavior, are not keeping their animals correctly, or are agitating them for views. I agree completely. :)
Mine is ~2", unsexed. Very shy, will retreat to its burrow (extensive), has never shown the slightest bit of defensiveness. I can confirm the feeding response of the A. geniculata. Not aggressive or defensive, more adorable and friendly, but I would not want to be confused for prey.
Hey, Brian! Yeah, I think that many folks mistake a good feeding response for "defensiveness". A. geniculata used to have a terrible reputation for being mean. Nope...they just think that everything that moves is food. haha Thanks for chiming in!
I'm so glad I added this species to my collection of 12 so far. Not sure if it a male or female but it has burrowed since I got it a couple of years ago. It is beautiful! Name is Red Velvet because when I asked my husband to name just one of my tarantulas it was this one and his response was TV. LOL! I didn't like it. Not for this cutie. It was a sling when I got it but it has managed to demolish every molt! HAA!
I adore my Vagans, never shown any defensive behavior. I’ve had it 3 1/2 years now. How old was your male when he matured? My first t’s were an avic avic and my vagans😊. I’m glad to hear you’re now giving your terrestrials more substrate. I have always given mine plenty of burrow room and as you’re finding out they do use it Pokies are still my fav tho lol
Hey, Darcy! He was around 5 when he matured. And I was never quite a substrate scrooge, but I'm definitely giving everyone a bit more dirt these days. I've been surprised to see which ones actually use it. Sounds like your vagans is a sweetheart! Thanks so much for chiming in!
My T.Vagans has a weird feed response where it will ignore food until it's practically touching the tarantula and half of the time when it goes for the roach it ends up missing it and the roach gets away lol. Although recently it's actually gone hunting for the roach but not very far, I do wonder if the roaches can sense the tarantula as I've noticed on several occasions where the roach will be near the tarantula but will stop and turn back as if it knows something dangerous is there. It's quite a difference from when I got it as younger juvie as it would immediately go for the roach in its first enclosure which I generally put to the small enclosure size and when I moved it into a larger enclosure I found it would slowly come out its burrow and grab the roach, sometimes it would dart out of the burrow and grab the roach but since moving it into the current bigger enclosure it doesn't seem to have as good of feeding response, might be due to switching from dubias to red runner though but will be switching back to dubias once the current red runners are all gone.
Usually the red runners continue to run around the enclosure while B. dubia will freeze and play dead when the spider approaches. I usually have better luck with the red runners, but yours might just prefer the dubia.
Someone just asked about the vagans recently and I showed them the last video you did. You are my go to for informational videos on tarantulas and everyone who sees it appreciates your views. Hope you are having a wonderful day!
I've got one and it docile and loves to dig if it is given enough substrate. My girl is mature and hardly comes out to be seen. They're really shy and she's in a 10 gallon enclosure.
Finally stumbled upon this video. I was a little surprised to hear that these are more on the skittish side. I was recommended a T khalenbergi as a beginner species and she is probably my calmest T. Awesome spiders! Awesome content! Keep up the hard work 👍.
I love spiders and tarantulas... I used to be afraid of them so I tried to learn as much as I could. And my fear is mostly gone, yay! I live in the middle of the forest so I get so many bugs and spiders inside. The spiders I will let crawl on my hand and then I release them in the garage or outside depending on the type. I'm still nervous about the centipedes though ... Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
That's how I got into them, Leeann...I used to be terrified of them. I'm glad to hear that you are over your fear as well! And centipedes tend to creep a lot of people out. haha
My T Vagan was acquired as a sling and disappeared in the substrate for 6 months. I finally had to know if she was alive and sure enough found 2 molts and she looked great at about 2 inches now.
So I went to petco and I looked at the green bottle blue enclosure and it had a black tarantula with red hairs on Its abdomen. Can this be a green bottle blue or is it a red rump and they got confused?
Thanks, I love your content,. I just realized my comment has nothing to do with the video, but a comment means engagement and the AI loves engagement. So I'll leave it to help the video be shared more by AI algorithm., Chilobrachys sp 'Electric Blue' My most "medically significant" Tarantula as well as the fastest one I have, is also the one I worry about the least. She is fast and scary but will always just hide in the closet place so she is my easiest to rehouse. That is just my experience. I just wish they would assign them a species name. I feel like a novice saying my "Thai Electric Blue"
Haha the AI does! Thank you! I had two Chilobrachys electric blues, and both would rather bolt and hide than stand their ground. Hopefully, they describe them someday so that we actually have a species name. Thanks again!
Would you say this is a good tarantula to get ready for an obt, the obt is essentialy the reason i got into the hobby i currently have a curly hair tarantula and a mexican red rump tarantula ive studied up on the obt extensively and just wanted to get the knowledge from someone who owns both ? Ps. Id say im well prepared ive had mine for about 3 years now got them together as slings!
Hey, Vince! I guess that it could be, depending on the temperament. I have one that is SUPER skittish that would definitely be a good stepping stone to an OBT. The other is quite laid back and calm. And, honestly, I don't find OBTs to be as bad as people say. If you give them room to burrow AND room on the surface to web, they will usually run and hid rather than stand their ground. That said, if you DO get one of the feisty ones, they can be a bit intimidating.
Anytime someone refers to an animal (species or individual) as "evil' or "mean" or some anthropomorphic projection like that, it tells me more about the person than the animal. There is a reason for any behavior. It might make sense for the animal. It might just be you're oblivious to obvious body language. Regardless, they're your pet. You chose this. It's up to you to make sure both of you are safe, calm, etc.
I agree 100%, Joe. It drives me nuts to hear people address them that way, because it insinuates that the spider is purposely trying to do them harm with intent. In fact, it's defending itself from what it sees as a threat. I can't stand that kind of stuff. Thanks for chiming in!
Oh yeah, my T. vagans digs like a bulldozer. I don't even bother with cage decoration because they will just bury it all in a few days. Just keeping a water dish in there is a challenge! And it's true, they are super skittish, and teleport into their burrow if I even touch their enclosure, but I have yet to see a threat posture. #notevil.
@@TomsBigSpiders Update: We molted, and now we definitely will throw up a threat posture.Still wouldn't call her "evil", but there's a lot less running and hiding; it's been replaced largely by behaving menacingly if anything comes in her cage. Sad. What happened to the spider that I used to know? : )
Mine is really calm, he even once climbed on my hand. Out of my 6 tarantulas he's the only one I occasionally will handle. Although now thinking about it I'm not 100% sure that he actually is a tliltocati vagans, he might be something similar looking
And if you're interested to know the agreed upon pronunciation of Tliltocatl, it's something like "TLEEL-toe-koch" with the last bit said from the side of your mouth like a lateral lisp. :)
i think, as a baseline, it should be "taught" to new keepers that ALL T's can be defensive. never assume any T will act any certain way. as you said in the video, attitude/temperament various from specimen to specimen. once new keepers are aware of this, maybe they won't label any T as "evil". one can hope.
Prekill the cricket and they will scavenge feed off of it. If you have larger crickets, remove a cricket leg and place it in with the spider; they will feed off those as well.
He who shall not be name from a certain collective is such a clickbaity a-hole. Still remembered seeing the thumbnail for his evil vagans video and thinking maybe it’s related to a culture who idk saw the spider as a sign of misfortune or something but nope. Nothing. Funny you mentionned the A. Geniculata and it’s feeding response. Just fed mine and it bolted away from the cricket. Super delicate when it comes to its food for some reason. Also just got my first threat posture from my mature male H. Pulchripes when he saw a cricket. So small yet trying to be so intimidating.
AMEN, man...I agree 100%. It's all about views and money with that one. The good news is, more and more folks are starting to realize it. Awwwww...that's adorable! I get more threat postures when feeding. haha Thanks so much for chiming in!
I think people confuse that initial feeding response as being aggressive. 9 times out pf 10 once they realize its not food their demeanor completely changes. My girl is 8. just like my LP both have good food response but chill after they realize im not offering food and are completely chill to handle.
YES! I agree completely. Once they realize their is no food, many will calm down. I used to experience the same thing when I worked with snakes. Thanks for chiming in!
Hi Tom well I got myself a T VAGANS the hobby species not campeche species, juvenile about 5cm , this will give me a better chance of looking after it properly,
I got a small juvenile about 2-2.5 inches. I haven't been able to get it to eat yet it made a burrow and sealed itself off so im assuming its in pre molt but still hasn't molted yet.
@TomsBigSpiders I'm thinking so as well it's gotta fat booty so I just moisten it's lil corner it's in and leave it alone and also I have an adult G rosea who hasn't eaten since I got her on May 26th idk if it's pre molt or her just being a G rosea lol. Appreciate the reply though!
You want to make sure that whatever you use hasn't been exposed to anything harmful. It's also best to collect them as they fall, rather than just grabbing some old ones.
I agree. I was guilty of passing on them early on because they were always so cheap and readily available. Now, I'm trying to make up for that by getting folks interested! Thanks, Miguel!
Just had to dig my little juvenile T. vagans out of their enclosure for a rehouse. Got an adorable full threat pose that honestly made me laugh more than anything. I’m sure they were summoning demons with all that evil.

Thanks so much! How are the temperaments of yours?
@@TomsBigSpiders oh they are quite skittish, but other than that i think they’re sweethearts :)
(She likes washing - the hot water helps her arthritis.)
Tony moved back into the garage when his girlfriend cheated on him, and is the baby of the family, so he gets forgiven when he takes his plate back to his room. 😂😂😂
I stg.
Yeah, it's like she was too busy exploring to remember to flick! haha She's settled in nicely and is doing great. Hope all is well, bud! Thanks!
She's so beautiful! My T. Vagans is my first Tarantula and he is very chill, tiny sling, he molted into his colors and I love him so much. He's skittish but he rather hide in his little house than flick hair. He's a great eater too, and gentle
Thank you for sharing your video!
It seems like a lot of folks started with this species...and survived. haha Thanks so much for chiming in with your experiences!
Hello great video information and rehousing nice tarantula Tom
Thank you so much, Moon! I hope that you have a great weekend!
I sent my male off to breed but I still have my female. And yes I have...several times. They are definitely reputable.
I got 3 of my pink zebra beauties from them about 2 summers ago. All still alive and doing well. About 3" across now. Actually re-housing them and a 4th pink zebra this weekend. Still haven't been able to see them from molts yet. They usually ruin them before I can get it out to check it 🙄
Just picked one of these up from Fear Not, so great timing on the video!
That's awesome! I got my first from them!
Bro when people ask what’s the scientific name of my Nicaraguan curly i always get tongue tied 😂, love your videos and I’ve learned so much from you 👍🫶🕷️
I'm NEVER going to get that genus right. hahaha Thanks so much!
Great video! I just got a T. Vagans sling in October and gosh is it cute as heck! They are such great eaters! Gorgeous spood you have!!!!🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
That's awesome! My big girl just molted, and she is stunning! Congrats!
Great video Tommy Boy!
I have a male a little smaller than her that is very skittish and lives underground. I also have a female about 3" that is very calm and lives above ground. Not bad for the most dangerous spider!
This is going to be hard to explain without pictures but I'll try:
Being cheap "home made" enclosures are my choice.
Hello! Thanks so much for chiming in with your experiences! And that sounds like a great idea! Are they still stackable when you use that method?
@@TomsBigSpiders No sir you are no longer able to stack.
I did it in an effort to get away from stacking, I wanted to be able to see in from the top. I'm sure you could modify where you drill your holes, or just have the top enclosure of the stack with the rings as the weight SHOULD keep the others in their enclosures.
I highly admire all your crafty enclosures!
Thank you very much!
As usual, as I get a new species, I check your channel and find amazing info about the new roommate! And I tend to translate the info to a friend of mine who is also into collecting T's but can't understand a word in english. Cheers from Mexico!
Hello from the US! Thank you so much for the very kind words! And that's awesome! I could do them in Spanish, but they would NOT be very good. haha
Just picked one up, an inch sling, super excited about it, great video!
That's awesome...congrats!
I love this video I am getting my first t. Vagans soon and I find this species really gorgeous. I really can't wait until my new baby gets here.
That's awesome! I'm glad that it was helpful!
hey tom, I just picked up 8 of these after losing my female a while back. Glad to see an update on yours, this is probably my favorite beginner species and my go to when people ask me what I recommend as a first spider. Hope to see more updates on yours as they progress, I realized I have a thing for big black spiders with those reddish hairs on their bum!
They are such an awesome species, so it's a shame some folks give them a bad rep. And I agree with the black and red!
Out of everyone I like your details the best.
Thank you
When need details I always watch you first
Thank you so much, Kevin. I really appreciate that!
Hi Tom & Mrs Tom, hope you’re both well and enjoying your weekend.
Lovely seeing the Mexican Red Rump, they’re striking looking Tarantulas, and a lot bigger than The Hamorii (adult size)
Smooth rehouse into a very nice looking setup.
Informative and interesting video Tom. Thanks for sharing.
Take care and enjoy the rest of your Saturday 💙💕🕷️
I hope that you're having a good weekend, Joanne! Thank you so much!
I always joke that my t. Vagans forgets that she's a new world tarantula lol. She has a very impressive feed response. And can be sassy at times.
Hey, Jasmine! Hahaha That's awesome!
Brilliant video Tom, And having my own T. Vagans, a juvenile, they are in no way evil and are a beautiful species of spider 🕷.
Thanks so much, George! Yeah, we've yet to have someone say that theirs is evil in the comments. Thanks so much for chiming in with your experience! :)
Wow! All your spiders are sooo gorgeous! I love your videos. Great camera work and awesome info! 🕷♥️♥️🕷
Thank you so much, Lisa! Billie says thanks as well!
My T. vagans (my first, and so far only, T that I've had hook out) was a massive burrower and is the current record holder for tarantula that has stayed closed off in its burrow for the longest, 4 months or so. He was pretty defensive and definitely more inclined to throw a threat posture than to kick, but also really quick with its feeding response and was very rewarding to catch out.
Thanks so much for chiming in, Madeline! Sound accurate to me!
Timely! I have six to rehouse this weekend, and was a tich apprehensive about it.
You should do just fine, Marcella! Good luck!
I have a T. vagans sling currently that’s right at an inch. I won’t say it’s mean, or evil. But the way it moves about it’s enclosure reminds me of a t that commands respect 😂
Such and underrated sp I have a sling called Vinny my partner bred and a Tliltocatl sp tortuguero saf that is basically a pimped up vagans named after the one and only Betty Page 😊 probably the most chilled spoods in my collection gotta love a vagans ❤
Great upload, as always you 2, looking forward to the next upload they make my day 😊
Hello, Charlene! Always great to hear from you. :) LOVE the name Betty Page! haha Thank you so much from both of us!
I just got a Vinegaroon 😊
Thanks for another great vid Tom 👏🏻
I had one years ago, Candy! They are so cool! Congrats!
lol completely called out Tarantula Collective
Did I? ;) I'm sorry, but I HATE that kind of crap. :)
Our super dangerous T vagans comes by its name honestly. Potato.
Bahahaha Love the name! Be careful with that "demon", Richard!
Great video as always
Thanks, Chantal!
Love my little vagans sling. Couple molts in now and it's about an inch dls. Super chill most of the time but skittish, decent eater. Can't wait for it to really put on some size!
Awwww...sounds like it's doing well! It won't be long now... :)
very under rated spiders...... love that black and red
The black and red is gorgeous, Dee!
perfect timing, my t. vagans is due for a rehouse after her last molt. her name is spicy, not because of her personality; but because when i got her as a freebie from fear not tarantulas, she was so small she ended up being housed in a travel size spice container :D
Ahhhhh that’s so cute!
What a great name! :)
Great video as always, I had one of these as a sling but sadly lost it in a bad molt very small (less than 1/2") and am hoping to get another soon. As a side note, I searched for mDesign closet storage boxes and they may be available through Target!
I'm very sorry to hear that, Krystal. Oh, that would be nice! Are they any cheaper? Thanks!
Hahaha Yeah, the "evil" think is irritating. We don't need folks pushing that kind of BS. And yours sounds awesome!
Great video tom i love my vagans and i know a couple of people with big collections who still count them as one of the best . It's that far feeding response and will power that peoole like about them .
They hit like trucks, which is fantastic! Unfortunately, I think that folks sometimes take that feeding response as an attack.
@@TomsBigSpiders My a.gen actually took my tweezers off me the other day it hit so fast .
@@tarantularamblings3149 I LOVE watching mine eat. I was trying to grab her water bowl with tongs the other night, and she bolted all the way across the enclosure at me! haha
Its obvious why everyone needs an a . gen in there life 😅
My first tarantula is a T Vagans. They were quite the little bulldozer when I first got them. They’re about 4 inches now and still love expanding out their burrow as much as possible. They’re getting their final rehouse soon because there’s no more room for them to dig lol.
Thanks for chiming in with your experiences! So...not evil? :)
@@TomsBigSpiders My point was that it’s a good idea to give them extra deep substrate… but yes, also not evil lol.
@@mister4045 Excellent points...both of them! haha
My vagans is chill and think these are one of the coolest beginner spiders. I love this species.
Thanks for chiming in, Brandi! Seems most aren't "evil". :)
I'd like to see more Tliltocatl species Definitely we need a Tliltocatl blow out this genus is so underrated. Thanks Tom! Excellent information as always. BTW do you have a T. schroederi I've noticed that this species has become more popular. Again thanks for the information.
I will definitely have to put one together in the future! Thanks!
Love the red heads 😊 She's a beautiful spider, I don't think she's evil. ❤
Thanks, Melody! And I don't think any of them are. :)
@@seansspoods9521 I agree 100%!
But Tliltocatl vagans is also a beautiful tarantula and I don't understand the "bad reputation" in the hobby at all!
Tom what type of leaves are those in your T. Vagans enclosure..? Thanks..!
Hey, Will! I'm honestly not sure! I bought them on eBay. haha I'll try to find out.
Excellent.
Thank you!
Sounds like you have a sweetheart there! :)
Omg mine female was 11 inches big! Never seen one so big and so slow and never kicked hair, she was sweet and slow moving.
If it was 11 inches, it wasn't this species, Dana. They just don't get that large. Do you have photos of it?
@@TomsBigSpiders they sold her to me as a Mexican red rump, and she had all the colours of a red rump lol
Man, you went all in with them...that's awesome!
I know a local breeder and I got 5 t Vagans and 6 T albo's Nicaraguan) for $49 can't go wrong. Lol.
Awesome that vagans, bought one ended up a male but such a pleasure, I bought another hopefully female, but still have male and he is a very nice tarantula to own ,well recommended
Fingers crossed that you get a lady, Jason! They are stunning spiders. How was the temperament of your male?
@Tom Moran he is very well behaved, can lunge at food sometimes, but that's to be expected, hungry more than likely not so much aggression.
Hi, Lynnette! Hahaha She survived! And that's so awesome! What a cute cat! Yes, people can be evil...tarantula can not. :) Thanks so much!
Hey Tom and Billie! This is unrelated to the video, but I have a question regarding insecticide and pet Ts.
Family members are really bothered by insects (mites ect.) And they want to use repellant when outside, and spray for things when inside (we travel for work so we end up living out of extended stay hotels and sometimes would like to spray because....hotels)
Is there anything that is "safe" for my pets? I heard mint can deter bugs, but wasn't sure if it would actually work, or harm my pets. Could you (and/or Billie) shed some light on this?
Thanks from a traveling Healthcare worker
Mine is SO laid back and chill! She is the only T in my collection I can occasionally hold. Only when she walks on me ofc
Hi, Mercedes! One of mine is as well. The other isn't defensive, but she runs and hides if disturbed.
@@TomsBigSpiders I think the "evil" reputation is undeserved honestly. Every T can be defensive if scared
HAA!
Hi, Amy! Love the name...that definitely fits!
I adore my Vagans, never shown any defensive behavior. I’ve had it 3 1/2 years now. How old was your male when he matured?
My first t’s were an avic avic and my vagans😊.
I’m glad to hear you’re now giving your terrestrials more substrate. I have always given mine plenty of burrow room and as you’re finding out they do use it
Pokies are still my fav tho lol
That really means a lot, Beth...thank you!!!
I've got one and it docile and loves to dig if it is given enough substrate. My girl is mature and hardly comes out to be seen. They're really shy and she's in a 10 gallon enclosure.
That's great, Eric! Thanks for chiming in with your experience!
Can I use a 3 gallon aquarium with a screen top? It has a false bottom for drainage so there is no standing water. It was originally made for isopods.
Hey, Daniel! I wouldn't use it with a screen top (wire mesh). They can get their toe claws stuck leading to injury.
I wasn’t complaining when I ordered a 1cm curly hair, that is now a 7inch female LP
Hahaha Upgrade? haha
Glad to hear that she's doing well, Bruce!
So I went to petco and I looked at the green bottle blue enclosure and it had a black tarantula with red hairs on Its abdomen. Can this be a green bottle blue or is it a red rump and they got confused?
That sounds like a T. vagans to me.
Thanks, I love your content,. I just realized my comment has nothing to do with the video, but a comment means engagement and the AI loves engagement. So I'll leave it to help the video be shared more by AI algorithm.,
Chilobrachys sp 'Electric Blue' My most "medically significant" Tarantula as well as the fastest one I have, is also the one I worry about the least.
T Vagans was my first T. I love mine. She just... chills. I leave her be lol
She doesn't try to bite your face off, Cassandra? haha Thanks for chiming in!
@Tom Moran she probably would if I gave her the opportunity 😂 But I am so hands off with my Ts that she doesn't get a chance. 🙅♀️
#notevil.
#notevil indeed, Brian! Thank you so much for chiming in! Seems that not many people are reporting "evil" ones... :)
That's awesome! Some of them are quite laid back. :)
And if you're interested to know the agreed upon pronunciation of Tliltocatl, it's something like "TLEEL-toe-koch" with the last bit said from the side of your mouth like a lateral lisp. :)
I sure am...thank you very much!
i think, as a baseline, it should be "taught" to new keepers that ALL T's can be defensive. never assume any T will act any certain way. as you said in the video, attitude/temperament various from specimen to specimen. once new keepers are aware of this, maybe they won't label any T as "evil". one can hope.
Yup...which is why I tend to treat them ALL with respect. Excellent points!
Nice shirt!
Thanks so much!
How about getting them from sling 😅 too small to hunt a cricket
Prekill the cricket and they will scavenge feed off of it. If you have larger crickets, remove a cricket leg and place it in with the spider; they will feed off those as well.
Where do you get those enclosures
Here you go! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079V3WQ5M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hi Tom well I got myself a T VAGANS the hobby species not campeche species, juvenile about 5cm , this will give me a better chance of looking after it properly,
Hey, Dan! That's awesome...congrats!
What size DLS is she tom?as of date of video
In this video, she's around 3.5" or so.
That was my first ever T 🙂
That's awesome, Stuart!
I got a small juvenile about 2-2.5 inches. I haven't been able to get it to eat yet it made a burrow and sealed itself off so im assuming its in pre molt but still hasn't molted yet.
Sounds like premolt behavior to me!
Thank you for this video. I received mine as a sling freebie and wanted to double check that I'm keeping her correctly.
What a great freebie, Pepper! Congrats!
can we use any leaves for the enclo?
You want to make sure that whatever you use hasn't been exposed to anything harmful. It's also best to collect them as they fall, rather than just grabbing some old ones.
It really does look like a Brachypelma …. It reminds me of my B. Klassi , just this one has no pink fuzzy footsies
Hi, Diana! It sure does!
My T. vagan is the size of a pea and is terrifying.😂
Hahaha You have to watch those "evil" spiders!
I just had a male hook out and am out of RI if you're interested in a breeding project. Love your vids and the podcast
Since my red rump moulted its so aggressive its wants to kill me everyday lol😂😂
Hahaha So, you have one of the demons, eh? haha
I did very fine with mine. A species that is not in fashion today , sadly
I agree. I was guilty of passing on them early on because they were always so cheap and readily available. Now, I'm trying to make up for that by getting folks interested! Thanks, Miguel!
I usually don't even feed n water my T. Vagans without full hockey goalie gear and some level 3 body armor.
Don't forget the flame thrower...just in case. Hahaha
@@TomsBigSpiders if it comes to that... im already a goner.
I absolutely adore my new bvagans her name is poppet xx
Awwwwww...love the name!
Hopefully the one I get is calm! I ordered a Grammostola pulchripes as my first and I got one of these cuties as a freebie lol
Give yours room to burrow. I've noticed that my more skittish one will just run to her burrow if disturbed. Congrats!
