It was awesome living opposite the Waikino tavern in the late 70's, we would explore Karangahake mineshafts after school and never had problems with any restrictions to access, even using old steel cables to cross the side rivers high up the cliffs, and finding explosives for more fun 😁
Damn Aaron! Its so cool looking at your video after such a long time. Brings me back right into the moment meeting you, thinking i was doomed because there is some security dude wandering around :D One day we will meet again in an abandoned place, i´m sure ^^
The end of the right hand side track where it crosses the river theres a blocked off tunnel we used to go in, has a massive old gantry crane about 60 mtrs into the mountain. If was fallen when we were school kids about 95 my friend and i were going to absail thru the rubble and drop down to the sharfts below. We did alot of abseiling around the gorge with both waihi collage and on our own as mates. Chur to the Rae family waihis/waikinos finest❤
Thanks for the info mate, wish I could've grown up in a place like this. I plan on visiting this area a bunch more in future so will see if I can find it!
@Aaron.Montrose good luck man ,coincidently the same mate I climbed with repelled into the main pit of the mine in waihi with another mate at night the video was pretty funny, aswell check out union hill and black hill which is the hills the conveyor belt runs thru from the Pitt in town to where they process the ore. Those two hills have a few shafts and tunnels aswell the union hill is the site of an old cyanide factory there's a walking track thru part of it now ,,,,,so much stuff in waihi and thames and coromandel✌️
Interesting, didn't know that loop track was closed. We did it a 10 years or so back with the children. The pump house was interesting (although you could only go some of the way into it). The children loved the tunnels and track etc, and we didn't have any concerns safety wise.
Been meaning to get into that specific tunnel for some time now! Cool to see what's behind the boards! Now to make the plan to go and explore once my back is healed...
16:39 Gold was the main mineral mined but there was also some silver. The upper levels where the ore 1/4 Silver and 3/4 gold the mid levels your levels more gold and the lower levels gold levels were low and the sulfide's increased.
Did the windows walk in late october, the side you are initially on was all open. I jumped the fence on the birdge and went across, the gate on the other side was unlocked. Wish i had a proper torch to go further into the mines on the opposite side.
Thanks man - will post our recent adventures soon! Maybe try toss a rope over the rusty tracks higher up, but very dodgy... Also that first level above is just a short intermediate I think, the one at the top is the proper next level.
Wow I was in the pump house35 years ago and it wasn't filled in and there was no guard rails around it. We were tempted to abseiling down it but didn't have our climbing gear
Would there still be small bits of gold in tailings or in the corners/veins etc that the standard mining co said nope too much effort, but a solo person could potentially find. Understanding it's not legal of course.
I can't see New Talisman coming to anything. Just bleeding their share holders. Never came to anything over the decades, why will it change now? All be the Talisman was the 3rd richest mine back in the day. Martha in Waihi 1st, Waiuta 2nd.
New Talisman belongs in the rubbish bin. Worst stock to ever list on the NZX. They’ve bled every shareholder dry. As for SMI, prayers up the sky rocket in 3’ish years.
@ why would I invest in a rubbish company who’s share price has declined -67.99% in 5 years and a all time share price decline of -96.06%. New Talisman Gold Mines is the Budget Toilet Paper of the NZX
One reason underground places are dangerous is bad air, i.e.low oxygen content causing people to pass out and not live. Another is getting lost in tunnels, not being able to trace there way out again. Other than that looks like fun. And this spot doesn't look too hairy.
You need a basic lock picking kit and a bit of practice or so a friend of a friends once removed cousin once told me or a decent size multi key ( reo cutter).
i went through 60 years ago with the tauranga tramping club no locked gates then ,if you travel further up the gorge on the left the track a mine shaft cut at 45 degrees very big . the new track bypasses it by doing a sharp left up the bank it was possible to take the bypass and then go hard right where it joins the original track at the top that was the case ten years ago

Thanks Felix, it was a great day - wish I had gotten around to editing this earlier. I hope our paths cross again some day too! :)
Just did the windows walk last weekend, this video answers my questions as to what's beyond the barriers.
Awesome to see all this again, I remember walking all those caves in the video as a kid

There’s a mining cave on the crosbies hut track. The one that starts at Victoria st at thames

Thanks for the info!
Very interesting place. Great video man!
Thanks a lot!
It's fine a lot of tracks in NZ closed for no reason
Just found your channel! That was great! They're probably watching your videos so they know which entrances to block off! 😂
Awesome video, thanks Aaron

Thanks man - will post our recent adventures soon!

@Aaron.Montrose sweet. I look forward to seeing it. Im hoping to visit Merve again next week for further information

@10:18 Remember this and had weird dreams of it, Thank god it's a real place lol. Stood in there when I was 6 or 7 haha
I explored this about 4 5 years ago now and it was open like that then
Scary hobby guys. What is all the noise like rocks moving all the time.

Yea there is but this is VERY fine need chemicals or very good mill
New Talisman Gold Mines are still sampling and their processing plant is on it's way from Canada to be installed and in operation by December 2024.

@@B2ON5ON You're too impatient. I'm making money on it and it hasn't started production yet. The hold-up's were because of the Greenies.
Cool video...maybe strap a flashlight to a mini drone and go explore those upper levels😁
Cool video 😊

Thanks James, I do take reasonable safety precautions - hard hat, multi-gas meter. and research the layout/plans where possible.
When i was a kid i always wanted to break in
is a drivit a drippy rivet?
Have explored any mines up the waitekauri?
Not yet but on the todo list! Recently went to Komata Reefs, which is nearby on the other side of those ranges.
Imagine mining that river. It’ll be full of gold
There is surprisingly little alluvial gold in Karanghake gorge, I’ve spent many a weekend looking though 😂
see any Cinnabar ore ?

holy shit do you have lead boots on,.

You didn't find any gold?
jurassic park

5:59 😂
Doc is such a failure. All they do is close everything these days.
And they can't even do that very well!
Haha why would you do this?
but you are a nob
