Randy's bass sounds so good. If only Rich Mouser would mix the next Dream Theater album we might finally hear John Myung like he was meant to be heard.
I don't understand how some really good bands continue to bury the bass in the mix...makes no sense to me. I agree--love how Rich makes the bass POP. Same with Pete's bass in Transatlantic and Dave's bass in Flying Colors. It just makes a huge difference!
honestly I have to disagree with you. The Dream Theater albums you're talking about are very well mixed. Just not ideal for cheap consumer products like earbuds for 30 bucks or some cheap home theater speakers. they used the frequency band to the lowest lows you can get. If I listen on my cheap AKG headphones or some wireless buds I agree with you but as soon as I fire up my studio Monitors (Focal Twin Be in a treated room) or my Shure SE846 I can hear the Bass extremely well. It just sits really low. A Smartphonespeaker can't even produce those frequencies. The standard of audio Equipment rose dramatically in the last decade and so the mix of Dream Theater changed with it to use this broader frequency board. But blatantly saying you can't hear the bass is just wrong. You can't hear it on your LISTENING DEVICE! So therefore for your taste the bass has his dominant area placed in a wrong spot. I just want to make things clear here because lots of people just repeat what's on the internet. I have regular listening parties where friends came over and especially with dream theater, all of them were surprised how powerful the bass is in the recordings. They never heard it like that before because they never were interested in investing more than a 100 bucks in good earphones or speakers + sub
