Bob Iarusci hugging Johan Cruyff was a blast from the past. Bob was an Italian Canadian from Toronto who was a solid defender for the Cosmos before going to Washington.
wow great goals and great crowds. too bad the league ran into financial disaster later on. it could have been one of the best leagues in the world by now!
U do know it went bankrupt 4 yrs later, ? Mls isn't a top 10 league, but it's attendance is top7 in the world , and the nasl never averaged over 14k a game, mls avg is 22k a game, and rising, it helps having your own stadiums, and a salary cap,
@@brando7266 It may have gone bankrupt but it was still more fun to watch due to all the star power. Comparing attendance from the 1970's and 2020's is apples and oranges.

Big year for the Seattle Sounders. Finished the top of the pack in won/loss category. Roger Davies was on a goal scoring rampage. Too bad they lost to the Cosmos again in Soccer Bowl at San Diego.
I remember that goal by Johan Cruyff. Never saw anything like it in professional soccer before. Took the ball at midfield and single handedly (footedly rather) take it all the way down field and successful score a goal.
Remember that the NASL folded when there was a bad down turn in the economy. Businessmen make cutbacks to downsize, otherwise I believe that the league would have survived.
Had nothing to do with economy - many sports flourished in 1982. Putting the NASL on TV 'in the ABC did' killed it; without that contract, the league began to fall apart quickly.
Over expansion destroyed the league. Especially, placing teams in markets where Professional Soccer weren't dinner table topics. Interest in The New York Cosmos was greatly undermined when The National Football league New York Giants started winning.
Another issue was parents weren't going to continue pay their hard earned money where the majority of American and Canadian players had very little hope of making the starting lineup.
He certainly scored a lot of them. And he seemed to be kind of clumsy and clutzy but he was always at the right place at the right time.. Also having the 10 times highest paid and talented teammates around him also helped him look good.
@@danielkelegian5306 Yeah he seemed kind of like a big oafy uncoordinated guy, but smart because he always put himself in the right place at the right time to score goals.

This is so cult lol. Some pretty sweet goals though. Begs the question, better than today's MLS? Why Americans think that home runs, touchdowns and dunks are more spectacular than goals beats me.
The biggest complaint I've heard about soccer is that it is boring because there is not enough scoring. But it always seems to be some Moron that says that..😂 So it's more of a compliment to soccer than anything else.
What makes me laugh is this ... at the end of the clip of goals, the Budweiser guy says "To All You soccer Fans" well .... Only North America says soccer ... The World Name, for The World Name, is FOOTBALL ... FACT!.
Well, we North Americans took the name football into the game that is played on the girdiron as in "American football". We North Americans took the "soc" out of association football which what the rest of you call it.

Thank you for posting! I loved the NASL. Went to MANY Tulsa Roughnecks games.
What?! You did WHAT?!?!!!!
So lucky to have been at many of the Sounders games at Memorial Stadium.
Great times!
Awsome!
Best league un the world at the time. European teams were paying working man wages at the time. RIP Cruyff !

In my opinion, the NASL is as good as MLS.
Yes I agree. But probably because I was kid then.😂 Life was more exciting then, now everything is old and boring.
Geez, not only is the soccer better but aren't all those jerseys so cool. I miss the NASL. Sorry, MLS, I just don't get you.
