    Great review as always. 90s movies are my favorite regarding the look and feel, since most of these were shot on the gorgeous Eastman EXR color negative stock. It was optimized for 35mm prints. The later and current Kodak Vision stocks were/are optimized for digital scanning. These are wonderful too, but the EXR remains my all time favorite color film stock. IMDb confirms it: Cliffhanger was shot on the Eastman EXR 500T 5296. Not sure why they chose such a fast stock, the grainiest of the EXR range, the most fine grain would have been the EXR 50D, but it looks fantastic.

      You have such valuable insight into these things True Film and I thank you for sharing your knowledge. That opening in Cliffhanger made me feel decidedly ill in the cinema (twice actually - I like to punish myself!) and even if it had have been the grainiest print ever after that I don't think I'd have noticed. Fabulous film making.

      @@moviecollector5920 Thank you. Well I am by no means an expert. I am a film buff since forever. I started making Super 8 films at the age of 14. I never touched video after Super 8's official demise in the early 1980s. Only very recently do I find the image quality acceptable. I had the pleasure of working small jobs at the Frankfurt TV station, from 1977 through 1983, including seeing all those fabulous old telecine machines and I accompanied camera teams on the road. I learned a ton about working with those classic 16mm film cameras such as the Arriflex 16S and BL: threading, light metering, lenses.... Only recently did I discover an affordable, good 16mm camera that can be converted to the wider Super16mm frame. Shooting on film is expensive and cumbersome, but the end result is more than worth it.
      And yep, I did have Derann Super8mm prints, including Die Hard (scope, slightly cropped top and bottom) and Silence of the Lambs (cropped at the sides from 1.85:1, one reel had a gate hair printed in, otherwise fantastic). They are simply outstanding. I had a trusty Bauer T600 projector with a better Isco zoom lens and an anamorphic lens from the same brand. Thanks for reading. P.S. always happy to share my humble knowledge. I am still learning, never too old. I'm Christian BTW. :)

    John, based upon your review, I took delivery of the 4k Cliffhanger today and watched the first 20 minutes having finished "47 Meters Down". Agree with everything you said. I'm projecting with a full 4K JVC onto a 150" 2.35 screen. Yes, the helicopter looked great, but most of all, the grain control on the 4K is stellar. I have an Atmos setup and the helicopters sound amazing. Sony seems to be the benchmark for 4k reissues. I paid $17 and this is a steal! Best to you and Susie!

      It occurred to me that in the UK we got a different cut of Cliffhanger to the USA Bilko. The offending scene was the one with Michael Rooker getting severely beaten up before he manages to tell the baddie "Season's over arsehole!" and chuck him over the cliff. Perhaps that had some bearing on a new Dolby track not being applied. Although I have to say, that scene did seem to be a little more violent that I remember it so maybe we've now got the international cut of Cliffhanger.

    Beautiful review of a wholly underrated gem of the 90s. Truly Stallone's best film and I am a huge rocky, rambo, cobra fan etc. Also shows how menacing and brilliant John Lithgow can be as a villain. He bloody chilling in 'Ricochet'.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920 2 года назад +1

      I see that Blow-Out has just been released on 4K in the USA so that's another John Lithgow villain performance that I'd like to get hold of. A little too expensive to import right now though so I'll have to wait.
      The 4K of Cliffhanger here is apparently different to the one in the USA. Our has a slight green colour bias which apparently the USA version does not. It's also possible that we got the UK theatrical version whereas the American theatrical version had a more violent beating up of the Michael Rooker character by the chap playing football with Rooker's head. When I recorded this video it didn't occur to me that there would be two versions of the film on 4K so I learned something there. I wouldn't have thought the market was big enough but the UK is the world's number 2 movie market so someone thought they'd sell enough copies of a separately mastered disc.

    Definitely everyone should get the US 4K. Region free of course and while the PQ is awesome the Atmos soundtrack is one of the best i have heard, especially great if you know the film well. Literally the closest it has ever been to that big screen summer experience in 93.

      I didn't know about the US release when I purchased this but we did have a slightly censored version over here. I think it was when Michael Rooker was having ten bells kicked out of him it was deemed too violent and cuts enforced. It looked bloody violent to me on this 4K so maybe it's been let through now but I expect that's why we didn't get the re-worked soundtrack. I remember seeing this with my girlfriend on a huge screen. It was opening night and the place was sold out. That opening sequence rocked the house with tension and people were actually screaming in fear. Obviously it's a shame the rest of the film is nowhere near as excellent (my personal opinion), but it is a good bit of fun.
    The laserdisc's surround sound mix was remarkable and still holds up. I personally LOVE laserdis'c PCM sound, which is quite often superior to many of the revisionist remixes given to so many classics.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is exceptional image quality and sometimes that's in the two for £20 deal so worth keeping an eye on their web site. Murder on the Orient Express never seems to be on offer but that's the best picture quality of the lot on my system. Sorry Ariel Alaniz, I missed your comment when you put it up. I've avoided talking about sound systems too much so far but I will get into it in the future. It is surprising that two different masters were created for this release but I'm sure there's a valid reason. I gave up on upgrading my sound system many years ago and I expect I'll detail why in a future video. To summarize, the size and shape of the room and where we sit to view the projected image means there is no advantage beyond 5.1 and I found that out the hard way. When 6.1 first came to the home market I added a fairly cheap £400 receiver to see what impact it would make. Unfortunately I did not have a third, identical surround speaker nor would I have been able to fit one in place as they're fairly large. So I slapped a JBL Control 1G up there which is a very good little speaker, but it messed up the timbre matching of the system as a whole. The reason for this is that I run THX Ultra and have done for almost 20 years. With the tripole surround speakers and the multidirectional front firing tweeters, the sound is often over powering for all but the largest rooms or a big hall. Height surround is a given with a full THX system as the sound is directed all over the room. I did look at purchasing a couple of identical Kef tripole rears but there's nowhere left to attach them. When it came to a modern amplifier to duplicate what I already have I'd be looking at well over a grand to achieve similar results. However, that's only a bit more than my Pioneer VSA EO6 cost over 20 years ago! I replaced that with a later Pioneer THX Ultra years later. I've never heard another home system that sounds so good but I hope I'm not boasting there. If I am, my apologies.

    Usually agree with you on movies but Sly’s best is either First Blood or Rambo, the (graphically) ultra violent final Rambo movie. Yes, the final Rambo as somehow I cannot count the atrocity they called Last Blood can’t be considered a Rambo movie. As that movie is propably too violent and gory for you I understand your statement though.😊😉

      Morning Pieter. I thought I'd state my opinion of Cliffhanger being Mr. Stallone's best film right at the start to generate a response and it succeeded. My recollection of the 4K is that there is slightly too much green in the image but overall it looks so good that who cares? The LaserDisc is probably the most accurate to how the film prints looked and this is borne out by my Super 8 trailer copy. But the definition of the LD isn't anywhere near as good as the 4K so it's academic really. I tried to pressurize Derann into getting the rights for a Super 8 release in 1993 but even though there were apparently a lot of collectors requesting it the boss of Derann didn't think it would be big enough. I dare say the rights would have cost too much if they would have been granted at all.

      @@pieterbalk-ht7kq It wouldn't be good for us if we all held the same opinions about everything Pieter. I've learned from a lot of people in the comments on this channel and I appreciate all of that because I've seen many great films that I would not have seen otherwise.
      I think I like Cliffhanger the best because of how good it was in the cinema. I don't like heights and so it had a big effect on me. I was even worse the second time when I thought I was prepared for the terror of that opening sequence. I was cold but with sweaty palms. It's amazing that a film can have such an effect but it needs a big screen to do it. This was almost four years ago now Chris but I do remember some people leaving comments to tell us that the US release does not have a greenish hue to it. The only reason I'd have picked up on it is because I know the film so well and have the trailer on Super 8 where there is certainly no trace of a green tinge to it. Nor is there on the LaserDisc but I did see this film twice in the cinema and I had no impression of green at either screening. It's still a damned fine 4K disc though and I would be able to adjust that green out of it via the myriad colour alteration options on the video projector if it bothered me too much.

    I have a question... and you look like the guy that might know the answer. I'm pretty familiar with 35mm workflow... from Steenbeck to print. But what I'm confused about is this... Why are these transfers using the original optical titles? When a negative is cut, presumably there is a clean negative without any optical titles, and those are combined when doing the prints??? I mean, maybe I'm wrong about this. It seems odd to have a neg-cut which have a second generation dupe with optical titles added? Cos it seems that a lot of these transfers suffer in quality when there are optical elements such as titles - in fact, even with dissolves you can see the pictures quality change on the outgoing/incoming shots. Maybe I've answered my own question, and negatives are prepared with all optical effects intact, including opening credits - but it seems a shame.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920 4 года назад +1

      The completed negative has the opticals within it but it would be possible to re-master if the original camera elements were still extant (finding those elements would probably be an issue now too). I think that is a lot of work for not an awful lot of gain domcoke but it would have been nice if the opening section of Cliffhanger had been re-done so it looked as good as the rest of it. Although the colour is a little different to original release now which may not be preferable to some of us.

    The first Rocky is better than cliffhanger.

      I hoped I'd get a few reactions to that opening statement Dizzy. Well done. I love Rocky too.

      I'd think most people would have Rocky as Stallone's best movie. I'd also have Cop Land and First Blood up there as well. The opening scene in Cliffhanger is a classic though. Every time I watch it I still expect Stallone to save her.

    his best? I'm surprised at this. i found it very corny. the story is good but man, there are some really cringey one-liners and eye-roll action sequences. Rocky is waaaaay better in my opinion. but to each their own.

      Exactly why I said it Ricky - to get the opinions of others. I too love Rocky and quite a few more Stallone films. Thanks for putting in your favourite. John.
