    Correction: Cast Iron is a terrible conductor of heat. One of the worst metals for conducting heat. What it is though is a great retainer of heat.

    • @MrFreeGman
      @MrFreeGman 2 года назад

      True, and you wouldn't want to use a material that conducts heat really well for this type of cooking because you'd just end up burning all your food. That's why I don't like cooking with copper or aluminum.

    I loved the video on how to setup and cook in the dutch oven outside and that is what mine will be primarily used for. I just received my first dutch oven and is planning on using it to cook a meal outside along with a cast iron skillet which my grandmother used during her lifetime to cook with on her wood stove.
    We still have the large cast iron pot which my grandmother used to heat water to wash clothes in and also make lard and cracklings in during the season when hogs was killed. That pot is now cracked, but is still used in my sister's home.

    At about 12 minutes, some distracting background music became noticeable. It was loud enough to drown out certain words in the presentation. Quite frustrating while trying to hear the presentation. Otherwise, great video! A nice straightforward introduction to outdoor cooking tools and how to use them safely. (I never heard of a coal chimney. Great invention!)Cant wait to make my first stew. Thanks!👍

    I live in Arkansas and have two dutch ovens which was made by Lodge and I love them both. One have legs for cooking outside, and the other don't have legs so it can be used on the stove top or in the oven. We lose electricity and sometimes it takes days to get it back on so we have food ruined unless we can cook it in the dutch oven.
    That is a great presentation on how to use the dutch oven and I love the way she presented it. I love this video so much and the information you all have shared with us all. I believe that most people should own a dutch oven so they can cook their meals outside if they lose their electricity for any length of time and want to feed their family.

    Very good video. Be careful of the galvanized pan. The galvanized coating lets off toxic fumes when heated. I would burn a fire in it first, then start cooking. The pan is a great idea other than that.

    Good video, even though I have grown up around them, and have used them for years, never EVER hurts to see other peoples methods, although not much different. Except gotta be honest, peach cobbler, I just can't do it. No way. I will go with a pineapple upside down cake or a berry cobbler. I blame my grandmother. Thanks for sharing!

  • @carmelitagood3384

    On the peach cobbler, I didn’t see any liquid added. Also, what kind of paper was used inside the Dutch oven?

    • @yamelalfaro4428
      @yamelalfaro4428 5 лет назад

      The liquid comes from the peach cans and the butter. About the paper maybe he used wax paper the one you use for cookies.

    What if you want to use wood instead of charcoal?

    • @okwildlifedept
      @okwildlifedept  4 года назад

      You will need to rotate your oven a lot more with a wood fire, also be cautious of your temps as a straight fire can be hotter. I believe we explain the hand temperature gauge technique above. depending on how long you can hold your hand near the fire is a good estimation on how high the temperature is... Now if you are using wood charcoal that is a different story and we would suggest you perfecting the hand temperature gauge technique.

    Do you oil the oven for the dump cake? Is that parchment in the oven for the cake? Length of cooking as on pkg?
    Thank you for your tips!

    • @okwildlifedept
      @okwildlifedept  2 года назад +1

      Yes, don't 350 and 45 minutes or so is ideal. It depends on outside temps, etc. The parchment is all you need to use...although you can skip the parchment and cook with oil as well.
