As a gay Hasidic Jew i found a way to practice my faith and be a proud Gay man. I don't need a synagogue to practice my faith. My faith is between myself and G-d. My partner is Irish Catholic and we have been together for 7 years..

@@barbarawebb7185Gehenna is not a fire & brimstone hell. No such place as a hell most people think of. Gehenna is like a mikvah (cleansing place for 11 months) before going on to the actual world to come. Most of us will go to Gehenna. The real evil people just die (Sheol) since G-d does not torture for eternity.
However, no one knows anyone’s destiny after they die. It’s not verifiable. In the entire Tanakh there is no mention of heaven or hell. Any punishment happens in this world in Tanakh. And if the punishment is death that’s all that’s said. Bottom line: run from anyone who thinks they know who is going where. JEWS DONT BELIEVE IN HELL period.

My boyfriend comes from an Orthodox Jewish family and they pretend not to care about homosexuality but they treat him and only him like a slave…they’re completely disrespectful behind our backs and it’s disgusting! I came into the situation open minded about their community and they don’t like me at all because I’m not a woman and not born Jewish (& not wealthy). They don’t like that my boyfriend is gay & not religious…I hate to say it but now I have a very negative view on the orthodox community now, like it’s a cult! I don’t hate the People, I hate the Religion. I completely feel for the kid in this video, him & my boy friend have a very similar story! He’s a sweet heart!!

I don't know why but I was the girl in school back in the early 2000s ,before being gay was able to be as open as now, that gay guys would always talk to me. There were several guys who came out to me. Just talking and came out to me. I'm in my 30s now and a few of them have hit me up on social media an has told me I was the first person they ever told and how easy I was to talk to. I find that to be amazing that I'm a person that other ppl find so comfortable.

i just want to point out that judaism is a big spectrum. i’m a conservative jew, i believe in god, i pray, and i’m in a very accepting community where all my friends are gay and i live the most normal life ever. i feel that this is important to point out bc not everyone, even within the orthodox community, is homophobic and u shouldn’t jump to conclusions about who they are based on their religion. also the reason many jews go to a jewish provate school is to learn torah and hebrew, and be in a community of jews.
    this was a great video!!!🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈😘😘

Kosher is more than just someone looking at the food production process. Kosher is a set of rules that some people follow when it comes to certain things such as the food you eat and in what order. Certain foods are prohibited. Certain foods must be made of certain things. Certain foods cannot be mixed. Certain things have to be prepared in particular ways. A rabi sanctions the certainty that the food is koser. The rules are based on religious texts. Some people who are not Jewish follow certain kosher rules for health reasons such as being allergic to certain things. There is another word that I cannot remember that means "in the style of Kosher" but has not been sanctioned by a rabi but at least for someone that lives a kosher lifestyle you will not overly disregard kosher rules.
The rule that most non-jews know is that pork is prohibited. So is some seafood. Animals have to be butchered in a particular procedure. All the blood must be removed. No mixing of meat and dairy in the same food. If meat and dairy are eaten at the same meal there is a time lapse between the two to maintain it being kosher. Eggs have to be unfertilized. Kosher food is served on kosher dishes. Rules can become very detailed when you impose the Kosher definitions on your food. These are just a few things about Kosher. And yes there is kosher alcoholic beverages!
Some people will cook kosher for the Sadar meal but may eat regular food the remainder of the week. They will have Kosher dishes and regular dishes. Kosher kitchen facilities and regular kitchen facilities. But you would not mixed Kosher food and regular food at the same meal.
I used to follow certain kosher rules because I could not digest milk products.

I love all these videos. You seem like such a lovely, sincere and sensitive man Matt. And the young man interviewed here is just amazing. I’m a straight, white, middle class, 60 year old suburban housewife. Lol! But I love to keep trying to expand my understanding, my heart and my mind. So thank you for what you are doing here. Just an FYI- because I’ve heard it in a few of your videos now…The word “committed” when used with suicide is “outdated” (so to speak) and can be highly triggering to those of us who have lost loved ones to suicide. It dates back to when suicide was considered a crime. Ie: “committed the crime of suicide”. People who work in the field of trying to prevent suicide are desperately trying to change the stigma around mental health and that incudes the language used around suicide. The preferred verbiage is; completed suicide, took his/her life or died by suicide. When people ask me how my brother died I tell them he died from depression, anxiety and grief. Most people get that. Blessings to you and all the people you interview. I am grateful the narrative around homosexuality and gender identity is changing. 😊

I grew up in conservative Judaism in the 1970s. It was repressive but not to the extent that you experienced. As an adult who moved to the Bay Area in 1993, I got a phone call from a rabbi inviting me to come to their congregation. I informed him I was gay and would want to bring my partner to the service. He told me that wasn’t a good idea and that I should keep my being gay to myself, but otherwise he said “I was completely welcome”. He also suggested I go get counseling. When I hung up the phone, I was done with Judaism. You’re an admirable, brave man, and am inspired by you.

God, I can't believe this going to hell crap is still going on in religious organizations. When I was growing up catholic and couldn't control my self gratifying sexual urges, it was labeled a sin and I would go to hell for it. Of course there was always confession to avoid that punishment but what would happen if you went to confession and the next day you masturbated? Can you imagine waiting a whole week before you get a reprieve? I can because I did. Of course the modern Catholic Church doesn't teach that anymore so I'm wondering if all those guys who went to hell got a reprieve and are now in heaven?

I've always wondered what it would be like to date an Orthodox Jewish guy. I've always felt bad for them because there is no room for them to be authentic in that culture even though there is so much justification for their existence in the mystical interpretation of the Torah. I feel the same about Muslims too. You were born just the way you were meant to be and never ever let anyone make you feel like you're defective. If they do, come talk to me and I'll sort them out.

All strict religions warp LGBTQ+ people like this. I've heard similar stories told by LGBTQ+ people who were former Mormons, former Baptists, former traditional Muslims and former Jehovah's Witnesses. Religion is what is the problem here, not the people in the religion. I'm just so glad that my family was not cray-cray religious. They're Catholic, but not jump-off-the-deep-end Catholic. As a result, they accepted me from the get-go when I came out to them.

What I find interesting is that he (someone who grew up in a strong Jewish community) said “someone” watching over food is part of what makes it kosher, but that is factually incorrect. According to sources online, kosher is a term that means “fit” or “proper” and refers to the types of foods you’re permitted to eat, but does not require “someone watching over it” or a rabbi’s blessing (another common myth).

What a nice young man, I hate how he had to fight those demons. Praise God he made it !! It blows my mind how people whom believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior like I do, would EVER make Gays or Anyone feel that way !!!! That is Definitely Not Christ Like !!! For me Jesus/God loves Everyone and regardless what you believe you have No right to judge anyone. It also saddens me that some Gays run from Jesus and Christianity because of foolish, ignorant people……🙏🏼❤️🕊️

I wish I'd been as brave and mature when I was a scared gay kid in a school that didn't do anything to protect me from the abuse and bullies.

Yeah it is hard to be Jewish and gay, have a friend who's whole family disowned him for being gay sigh 😔 I am a German Jew but Wiccan and its hard on Jews who are gay.

I am so torn... on one hand the stories of queer existence are important to tell.. on the other hand the placating overly supportive " oh my god that's so gorgeous " reaction to everything, rubs me harshly. The "amazement " as a reaction seems forced or faked. Granted I am a Cynic, but it just seems pandered to me. 🤔🖤💀🖤

It's so difficult to understand how people actually have a hard time realizing and truly accepting that being gay is not a choice. Homosexuality is certainly no choice. I figured that out when I was 16 years old and used to hitchhike from the EastBay into San Francisco. As a straight male it was quite apparent that being gay was not something people just decided they were going to be or do. Maybe people need to be exposed to gay people when they are young, when they are more teachable or less judgemental by nature, and that might make it easier to understand that LGBTQ are born that way.

Sinning and murder flow from Adam and Eve's sin in the garden. Every person has to be born Again into JESUS in order to escape what sin or habit Satan attached to them.

If Micah keeps ONE kid from suicide the he did God’s work. I heard the phrase “pray away the Gay” coming from Christian religious communities too, and that fact convinces me the God just wants all of His/Her children to treat each other with respect and kindness, and if God wanted everyone to be straight then gay people wouldn’t exist. God bless Micah!!!

Having grown up in an orthodox religious space I can identify and sympathise with people from such space. I have a lot of gay Jewish friends who have a lot of judicial and religious freedom perhaps because of the country of South Africa with its human liberties. It saddens me that 20% of Jewish queer youths would commit suicide because of religious homophobia and spiritual bullying of threatening them with hell. Great work Micah is doing collaborating and making lasting moves and changes as a young person. May he have many years of continued self-love and create space for many more LGBTQIA+ Youths in the orthodox Jewish space he's in.

"You'll go to hell" is a Christian thing. It doesn't seem to be a Jewish thing. This must be an outlier, even for Ultra-Orthodox.
