Final Fantasy 9 is the ninth main installment in the franchise,. After the sci-si steampunk style of Final Fantasy VII+VIII, is a return to the classic series roots, making it into a medieval fantasy setting, but also things like the class distributions per character, instead of that dynamic that Materia and GFs could do.
It is considered like a love letter to the franchise, & you can already tell by just looking at the details in the game, from the atmosphere it provides, to the gameplay features.
These games tend to make the iconic monsters, spells, weapons, or even character names appear through most of the installments, giving some identity to them, but still keeping their individuality as a standalone game.
What I want to focus on, is not these shared elements of every game, but rather the callbacks and references that 9 makes to the other releases specifically, that makes it so special.

Ignore my accent, and the fact that my brain freezes for a second when there's a word whose pronunciation i'm clearly not confident about lmao.
    Anyway, timestamps!

As someone who's first Final Fantasy game was FF9 playing 1-8 for the first time and watching all these call backs unfold confirms that FF9 is indeed a big love letter too the first 8 games and for the fans of 9!! FF9 is my favorite not just kuz it's my first and I'm blinded by nostalgia(ok yes I'll admit it lol but it's more too it then just being my first and nostalgia) the story gave an impact on me as a kid and even to this day!! E2PG is a frustrating challenge yet it feels quite rewarding!! FF10 is a very close 2nd favorite of mine then it's a toss up between 5 and 6!! 7 is great and I can see the fuss behind it I'd probably put FF7 in my top 5!!

Hey, I support you and anyone who have their favorite game for nostalgia reasons (among many other reasons), I don't think that's bad at all, if anything is a statement of how impactful a game is to you in the emotional impact and only a handful of games can do that.
I do believe that the same excitement of playing FF9 after the others and seeing the references in this game, can be had the other way around, playing FF9 first and then seeing the inspiration (same with FF14 for example). I think that's pretty cool
