  • Our lord and saviour Hozier (or "forest daddy" as he is known to tiktok), just put out a new album and it happens to be heavily inspired by Dante's Inferno. And since I seem to be the target audience for this piece of work, I figured I'd film myself overthinking about it for 30 minutes straight. You're welcome.

    I've had Dante's inferno for a few years now. I'm saw it in a bookstore my sophomore year, and i recognized it as "hey! Thats the one about hell!" and bought it on impulse. Unfortunately, i never got around to reading.
    Wendigoon made a few videos of his interpretation of the Divine Comedy, but I still didn't read it.
    Then, Hozier released Unearth Unrealed and i just HAD to read the book that inspired the beautiful album. I own the Anthony Esolen's translation.
    Ill admit it, I'm only being able to read 2-3 cantos a day. Its a tough read with all the poetry and flowery language, but its the beautiful. I teared up reading Francesca's lines, just like i did when listen to 'Francesca'

    This video was suggested for me to watch because probably I have an addiction with everything related to Hozier (guilty). Because of this album, I purchased a copy of Inferno and tried. Such a short book but soooo hard for me to understand! At first, I stopped, feeling dumb, because I couldn’t understand it- maybe it was because English is not my first language?maybe. Then I decided to read about Dante’s life, and that helped quite a lot tbh.
    Your video was super interesting for me because it showed me even more connecting points! Thank you for it ❤ thank you for showing your perspective, and sharing your thoughts

    Hi! I studied in Italy too and I was looking forward for an analysis like this! I really loved this video and it gave me new interpretations for the album (which I obviously love). Being a big Dante fan, I have some things to add!
    - Francesca: I read that Hozier actually wrote the song from Paolo's pov, and it quite shocked me. I don't know if I agree with the choice. In the poem Francesca is the one speaking because she is a woman, she incarnates sin, lust, she is literally the anti-Beatrice. Hozier said he wanted to give voice to Paolo too but the lyrics you mentioned, "My life was a storm since I was born", also made me think about the experience of a woman at the time.
    - I, Carrion (Icarian): I don't know if I overanalyzed but I see some Ulysses references here! Icarus is known for wanting too much, going too far, too close to the sun, just like Ulysses sinned by "hubris" (excessive pride or self-confidence). It is kinda random but I wanted to say it, to include the song in the album pattern.
    - Eat Your Young: I lovedddd your analysis! I see some Conte Ugolino too here, I am surprised he isn't often mentioned in relation to this song.
    - Who We Are: Hozier said it is about the 5th circle (the wrathful) but I don't know how to connect it? I just feel a lot of anger coming through the lyrics. Anger towards the world and life and himself, towards his wrong choices. But I'm not sure about it.
    - Son Of Nyx: I get why you mentioned Caronte since he's the first son of Nyx coming to my mind but it is technically declared this song refers to the 6th circle. I don't get why.
    - All Things End: I see what you're saying with the title related to the end of the soul, in which Averroists (so heretics) believed. LOVED YOUR ANALYSIS SO MUCH.
    - To Someone From A Warm Climate: it is technically referred to the 7th circle (the violent) but I don't get it. The only thing that speaks to me are the lyrics "The awful things we do to make the head go quiet".
    + I appreciated so much the excursus you made about De Vulgari Eloquentia!! Understanding the Divine Comedy is understanding Dante.
    - Abstract (Psychopomp): a Psychopomp is essentially a mythological figure who brings souls in the afterlife. So, Caronte. Hozier said the song is about the death of an animal: it makes sense the theme of passage from life to death. I think this song refers to the Secondo Canto.
    - Unknown / Nth: I think this song is so accurate in relation to the ninth circle!! There is a lot of "empty space" that recalls the actual coldness of the circle.
    If you read all this well thank you for the patience!! Sorry for the eventual mistakes since English isn't my first language. Loved your video so much, hope this comment will be useful.

    i have been tirelessly waiting for this since you're my favourite critic/analyst/online commentator. i had been wanting to read the divine comedy for a long time but always felt hesitant because of how large it is (in terms of being intimidating, a pillar in the western canon), and since you host the dante book club and very explicitly are a fan, i was wondering if you would recommend any study guides to fully be immersed in the poem, or any scholars whose work on dante have struck you the most. sending lots of love, big fan!!

      Awww that’s so kind, thank you ❤️ one of my fav commentators is Anna Maria Chiavacci Leonardi but I don’t know how much of her work has been translated into english. Lino Pertile and Teodolinda Barolini are 2 other established scholars that come to mind. I don’t know if there’s a widely adopted study guide, but the Oxford Handbook of Dante is pretty good - two of the authors were my professors when I studied there!

    I have a question for everyone. I’m an avid reader but not of poetry. Im so wildy interested in this story but I’m not sure I’m built to unpack poetry of this magnitude. Is there any sort of retelling of his works? Maybe someone wrote a novel? I’m not sure I’m built for a YA wattpad type of retelling either😂
    Maybe I should also ask if you guys think its doable as a poetry newbie?
    Thanks for making this video! It was very insightful.

      I’ve seen prose retellings around although I’ve never read one myself so couldn’t recommend specifically. But I also think that you should just give it a go! I know it’s an intimidating text but most editions come with in depth commentary, so you won’t be left to your own devices. Try it an see how you go! I also just finished my Inferno and Purgatorio book club on substack and I have a post with my thoughts for each canto. It’s free for everyone to read - link in the “about” section of my channel. Good luck ❤️

      I would recommend the Edition translated by John Ciardi (if you search Divine Comedy John Ciardi it should be the top result), it has annotations within the work and short essays before each Canto explaining many of the previous works of Dante in their context as well as many of the historical, biblical, philosophical references necessary to really understand the work. I have no experience with Dante or the Divine Comedy and it has made the work incredibly accessible to someone with no background in Poetry, Philosophy, Theology, or Italian history. @@accordingtoalina

    Hello there, also a huge Dante fan here. I've given the divine comedy multple shakes during my early college days so might preface an excuse for pedanticism right ahead if there might seem any. and great vud btw
    there is an interpretation of Francesca's story that is less romantic and subtle which advocates that the couple company in hell is a part of their torment. In Penguine's edition of Mark Musa's english translation, according to subtle textual inneudo's, Fransca hates her beloved that drew her to hell and tarnished her image she's forced to accompany him in a toxic relationhip so to speak. Also about Dante's following fainting, according to Musa, is part of divine smite on Dante for doubting God's Judgment. becuase true love is the love of God only. Not of humans, definitely not lustful one.

      This is a great point and one I had in my notes at one point but then decided to take out because i wanted to keep the video around 30 mins. Yes! They’re definitely a reminder of each other’s sin and shame and that’s what I mean when I say I love how Hozier turns Francesca’s attitude from wounded shame to unapologetic rebellion against heaven

    • @accordingtoalina
      @accordingtoalina  9 месяцев назад +2

      Interesting point about the fainting - I wasn’t aware of this interpretation. I’ve always read it as a sign of how overwhelmed he was trying to reconcile his own feelings of compassion for Francesca and the knowledge that he shouldn’t feel that way, on the contrary should rejoice in seeing how God’s will is being done. As if his brain is short-circuiting because of this tension.

    It can be difficult to find work as a writer and literature enthusiast and I was wondering whether you could give some advice in terms of what jobs you personally have done after your degree and whether it’s been as difficult as others say it is?

    • @accordingtoalina
      @accordingtoalina  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey - it really depends on what you mean by “work as a writer and literature enthusiast”. I’m a journalist and I also write my personal projects (the newsletter for instance), but I know a lot of people in my uni cohort who went on to do phds and some who went into marketing and advertising. If you want to do anything that involves writing I suggest doing as much of it as you can - for your university publications or pitching articles to magazines/websites you like. The pay is not great (if there is any at all) but it will give you some experience and a few writing samples you can refer to when you decide to apply for writing jobs. Good luck!

    I dont think the criticism at the end is necessary, Hozier wanted to tell a story and those songs were not just a break from the darkness of the poem but rather the poem was just a tool for telling the story he wanted to tell, a tragic love story with a bright powerful ending. In my eyes Hozier didn't get tired of the darkness, he just had a story and stuck with it. There are many lenses to view this album and I think looking at it from a perspective of just "the entire purpose of this is to reference Dante" is missing the point. I appreciate the video though, thanks for the easy to understand explanations of these references :)

    I think all things end is more intentionally linked than it seems! The genre of the music is literally gospel music. It’s something you’d expect to hear in a predominantly black church in the southern United States. I literally was so shocked to hear a nihilistic message with that music when I first heard it. Typically that style would have the opposite message. So I think the music style juxtaposed with the message was hinting toward heresy as well.

    I like the video, its well done, but please, please get a pop filter. I think the whole time I was distracted listening to the noises of your mouth, and not your words.

    I love how Hozier has always played with the absurdity of religious beliefs and its contradictions. He takes what he thinks it’s valuable and discards the rest. A circle for babies that didn’t accept Jesus, it’s too funny. Only Hozier makes me stand any thought of religion.
