The title of this video/series should be called Reading: A Master Class with Jess. This is the video series I’ve been waiting for you to make. SO excited for this series!!❤
I loved this video!! I would like to add, for those who have issues concentrating while reading I would highly recommend taking a social media break to cleanse your brain from the need of having constant stimuli and to basically train your brain to sit with a long text vs a 2 min tiktok. That’s what fixed my dnf book dropper problem!!
This is so interesting! I’ve been really struggling with a book at the moment (which is usually my cup of tea!) and I wonder whether fast paced social media has really impacted my reading…
For those who face reading slumps, another tip would be to watch videos like these or reading vlogs!! I’m actually watching this because I haven’t felt like picking up my book in the past few days.. I love read with me vlogs and snappy book recs, just watching the excitement of content creators like Jess when they talk about books can give me the push I need to read again. Or therapeutic reading vlogs that remind me of the feeling that I’m missing. Going to read now before bed, enjoy your reads everyone!
This was great!!! I was an avid reader when I was younger but never really enjoyed the books I had to read for school. I stopped reading recreationally in high school but decided to pick up a e-reader as an adult. Since then, I have found my genre of books I love and am not afraid to DNF books.
This is so great, thank you - I'm a intense burst reader who then forgets books exist for a couple months! But, a massive shout out to audio books n thanks for mentioning them! I struggled so much to get through books in my teens, which I later found out was due to dyslexia (not everyone sees the words move when the read, what?) and adhd, and since I discovered audible and Libby I've probs read more books in the last yr or so than i have the rest of my adult life... audio books truly changed my life :)
As a stage 3 reader it's so hard to commit to DNF and finally I've tried it this year, but I have been DNF-ing 3 books in a row and now feeling anxious about not finding the right one to draw me back in. Hopefully I'll find the right one soon... Loved this video and will look forward to the next videos in this series, thanks Jess!
this is so needed because so often I don’t even know the language or verbiage for what I enjoy or what I’m looking for….. there’s only so many times I can go by “feelings” 😭
Loved this video Jess! I've definitely found my literary tastes in the past two or three years from careful honing and reading voraciously across all genres. Can't wait for more of this series!
I have a confession to make, I am dyslexic I barely read books, especially fiction it can take me a year to finish a book. But I still follow you and watch your videos because I really like your channel and your vibes ☺️🌺🌺🌺🥰
This video was exactly what I needed! I’ve been trying to get back into reading lately and it’s hard to know where to start. This was beyond helpful and encouraging. Thank you!! ❤
I love that your RUclips has become so book focused nowadays, because these were always my favourite videos of yours. I had a few of your book videos to catch up on, so sorry if it is mentioned, but have you read Lessons in Chemistry? That was one of my favourite recent reads ❤️
This is such a great video Jess! I'm very much an all or nothing reader but trying to get into a flow despite my AuDHD. I've actually found my goodreads bar to be a good push because I can visualise my progress better at the early stages (once you hit the half way point in a physical book I find the weight of the left side of the book is a much better motivator). Plus it keeps me accountable because I want to brag about my progress lol
Thank you so much for your videos and blog post about reading! I've been following you for a looong time now ahah and since I too am a former literature student, I love how you talk about books and review them. Thank you for your dedicated work! 🌻
Loved this and can’t wait for the next one! I completely agree about findings those books you love-it’s 🤌🏼 the best 🤌🏼 and so much more personal than just movies/tv shows. Even though I’m a fairly established reader at this point, this reminds me of when I started reading again after graduating from uni. Fantasy was always my favourite as a kid, but because of social media around 3 years ago I just assumed all recent fantasy was about fairies (thanks to ACOTAR) which I just was not interested in. I finally read Black Sun because of a book club and it was such a huge relief and opened me up to so many wonderful books!
Loved, loved the video!! 💕 Also, another good site for discovering books is Electric Literature. They have reading list based on specific theme/trope, author interviews, and a bunch of other cool things. Looking forward to future videos in this series 🦋✨
This is great advice! I really struggled to find books that would keep me interested and didn’t have me googling what a word meant every 2 pages and since I enjoy true crime I went in a similar direction but fiction thriller wise and found a great author who writes in the perfect style for me and now I’m really hoping to make reading a regular thing I do :)
This was a really wonderful video Jess! I think you nailed it when it comes to what keeps people from reading in the first place and you gave so many creative suggestions in terms of where to find one's taste. Can't wait for the next ones!
Thank you for creating this kind of content. I’m doing a masters degree in writing. (In Spanish we say escritura narrativa 😅I don’t know in English). I am currently reading Jose Saramago’s book Blindness, and I’m really enjoying it
OMG finally! I think as a lot of other viewers of yours I'm so so excited about this series. thank you jess! I would place myself in category 2 but would also consider myself as a reader already. sure there are times where life gets busier and others when I read a lot more. My biggest struggle is that I have so much expectations after reading a good book that I can get a little hesitant to start a new one, being afraid it can not get to the same level. And ofc as you said I don't want to ditch too many books. So I'm not the best at knowing how to look for some of the criteria points that are important to me and have a hard time finding books that I'm curious about. Another question: as a avid dystopian reader and anxious person at the same time, have you ever had the situation where you enjoyed a genre a lot but also knew that it feeds some negative points in you?
I’m on a stage 2 when it comes to reading 😢 I used to read so much and love it, life got in the way and I relied more on audiobooks instead. I plan to start reading non-fiction books as I used to be more a YA girl.
I consider myself a reader even though not a strong one. Since I remember I've always read not more than 12/13 books per year and I'm definitely not consistent during the year. Also I have sort of high standards and feel the need to read only the best since the time I spend on reading is little and cannot be wasted... This video helped me find new ways to sort out what I like and enjoy more the act of reading without stressing myself😂
What about Suzanne Heywood's Wavewalker :Breaking Free, Harper Collins (2023)? She begins "I grew up sailing around the world on a boat. My father set sail from England in 1976 on the Schooner Wavewalker with my brother, mother and me on board for what was supposed to be a three-year voyage but turned out to be a decade-long trip....." A seven-year old girl on a seventy-foot yacht, for ten years, over fifty thousand miles of sailing . . .from the bestselling author of 'What Does Jeremy Think?, Wavewalker is the incredible true story of how the adventure of a lifetime became one child’s worst nightmare - and how her determination to educate herself enabled her to escape' - Simon Winchester.
I struggle with convincing my husband that there are so many books out there for him based on his taste in video games and films. I play a lot of video games myself, but books bring a deeper joy for me. I know he'd adore the stories, but he just simply isn't interested in the actual task of reading, and can't pay attention to an audiobook. Maybe someday 😂
If I could only recommend one book - The seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. This is not the Seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo (not read that husbands one) Xx

Yayyy I was waiting for this series for so long, I especially can’t wait for the video about how you annotate your readings.

This was such a good video, so informative and not overwhelming. The Out Of Order tee has been with us for a long time, I've always loved it.
What a great series idea ! Thank you for your helpful advice.

Wonderful video
It might just be me, but the audio sounds really muffled, the little clip without the mic sounded clearer weirdly enough
Nice❤
Thanks for recommending those reading lists from Lit Hub! Very helpful
