Here’s a song I wrote in Old English a while ago, which I have decided to remake. Music, lyrics and arrangement by myself, with vocals by me and my wife.
The song is dedicated to perhaps the greatest Englishman in history, King Alfred the Great. The song is largely based on the Anglo Saxon Chronicle’s telling of the Battle of Edington/Ethandun in which King Alfred overcame the Great Heathen Army and baptised their king, Guthrum.
In a church in my hometown, there’s a stained glass window which portrays Alfred with the tagline “Subduer of the Danes”, which I thought was an awesome title, so I just had to implement it!
    I hope you enjoy!
If you'd like to support my work, you can do so here: buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard/
Thank you for your kindness. Lyrics in description.
My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence.

What a gift! It came exactly when I was studying Anglo-Saxon history before to the Norman conquest. King Alfred is a fascinating character to learn about. Most popular culture prefers to narrate stories about Viking invaders rather than those who fought pirate invasions. Early English history is fascinating, from the Saxon conquest to the shift in beliefs, internal battles, unifications, Viking invasions, religion disputes, and so on. Damn, I'm not even English, but the events of 1066 almost brought me to tears. Thankyou for this!

If there ever was a King who did deserve the title " The Great" King Alfred certainly fits the bill.
Extravagant song you've made here Sir; perfect mix of intense Choir war chanting for motivational drawl and complementary instrumental melody ( specifically the flute). What makes it special to me is how the story being told is just at the right tempo to hear the words in its fullness, close to how a bard tells a tale. This definitely is one of your top works.

As an American 🇺🇸 with Ancestry from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Denmark 🇩🇰 and Sweden 🇸🇪. This song really hits! I love learning about our Anglo Saxon and Viking ancestors and love learning of both cultures. However, Alfred the Great definitely is probably my favorite Anglo Saxon (and one person of that age) if it was not for him we would most likely be speaking some form of an Old Norse derived language like Danish. Old English may not have evolved to our Modern English and theoretically could have died out. 💯🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🗡️✊🏻 Also much love to any of our distant Kinfolk in Europe. 🧬🩸🌳

I have been listening to your music for I'd guess 6 months now, and frankly find it fantastic. Really enjoyable stuff, the Germanic Songs and specifically Old English Songs really scratch an itch for me, being of Germanic descent, and finding the history so enjoyable. Not sure if you've studied either language but the idea of a sort of North Sea Germanic/"Ingvaeonic" tune including, Old English, Old Frisian, and Old Saxon could be really cool. Anyway, keep it up and Godspeed brother I'm excited for what is to come!

I just found out a new region of music you should check out- Occitan, France.
The region was originally a Basque area that got culturally absorbed by the Celts, conquered by the Romans & then the Franks. All their Medieval folk music, that I've found so far, either sounds like English/ German/ Scandanavian folk, or some sort of primitive Oompah (usually the latter when it seems to be party music). Just to be sure it's not Basque influence, I looked up what their music sounds like & that's more like a cross between Irish & Greek. Nothing like this.
