Somehow I'm now a fan of straight pool it's like watching Curling. It's definitely seems more of a strategy game. I was just at Griffs about a month ago and will be back every future Vegas trip.
Yeah, Thorsten Homan has said it's a better practice game than a competitive game. I'll tell who what though, you get good at straight pool and you're automatically a threat at any game on a pool table.
@@fredhugard7444 I use to play, travel and hustle pool. Vernon Elliott was a great one pocket player who also played straight pool and bank pool. He could beat most players of his time in 9 ball, so you must be right. I never played one pocket, straight pool for any money. However, I love the FAST game of 9 ball. Vernon would make players bet so high and never gave his name. Very few knew him, but word gets around. Thanks for you input. At my age, if I played again, I would have to learn one pocket. My eyes are bad and my endurance is not good at all. I truly people play better today than they use to. In fact I've been quit since 1992, only to pick a pool cue up a few times since then. My name is William Dixon or as they called me "Cripple Bill."
@@alydar21 I mean, where's the action, a 9 ball game between two fast players last an average of 3 minutes. That means every 3 minutes if you're playing for a 1-- bucks a game your exchanging money. 200 dollar difference in your pocket from 2 -5 minutes, now that's action. You are right, this takes discipline and I would have to be a ton of money to play. Not for me!
Too much luck involved on the break and balls spreading in the rotation games. 14.1 is the true equalizer. No wonder it was *the* championship game for nearly a century
from what I know and heard is the table willie made that run was a 9 footer. and he didn't miss at 885 or whatever. he stopped because he was tired. one thing for sure the equipment is far better today esp the cues
It was in fact on an 8 footer and the count was picked up in the run when he already had over 200 so they say, so the 526 was definitely unproven and unsanctioned. Jason Shaw has since run about 100 more than Shmidt 720 something.
Morra, when he shot right handed, would position his head way over the cue. I think he discovered he was left eye dominant and switched to left hand. Great player. Calm, patient and. focused.
He always knew he was extremely left eye dominant. his right handed shooting positions lead to neck/shoulder problems thats why he switched to left handed.
It seems the great players of old played at a much quicker pace. My guess is it was because they already KNEW what the next two or three (or more) shots were going to be and didn't have to spend a lot of time pondering, unless something went wrong and they had to make a new plan. Way more fun to watch someone who is in stroke and more or less running on autopilot. That's when the beauty of the game is revealed.
@@greganderson8985 you're right about looser pockets and i agree they make shooting easier, however, slow cloth, less reactive balls and slow cushions all make straight pool runs MUCH tougher. also, those players were on their own. nowadays you can get excellent help and tips on every level of the game from you tube alone.... like most sports/games it's a slippery slope to compare across generations.
Damn, too many people bitched about the slow play. The next time you go to the pool hall, try to play with the opposite hand and see how you do. John switches to his left hand. He is good at it, but not totally comfortable. He needs to take his time and make sure that everything is aligned and etc.
Turn up the volume !
Lot of negative comments I liked this match up. Thanks for up loading this match.
They need a shot clock WAY TO SLOW!!!

Same here. I'm usually a 9 ball guy but I watch this for positioning tips and strategies.
14.1 Continuous is possibly the best pocket billiard game to learn all the rest of the games (debate can be also for Rotation, as well).
Love you guys
Wake me up when it's done, no wonder I never played straight pool.
Yes, it's only for the very disciplined.

what happens if you leave the last ball inside the triangl?
It's cool how that put a pool match in between the ads...
Shane beat Billy in just over an hour. This took 3.5 hours. Put them on a shot clock for God sake.
great lighting

They had much looser pockets and slower cloth in Mosconi's day, a tad easier to say the least. My humble opinion as to why they could be much quicker.

@1:36:00 looks like the 4 goes off the 10 in the upper right corner.
Shot clock needed badly!
your audio is barely hearable during the break commentary, this is a recurring problem with your channel,, please pay more attention.
It would impress me if he could run that many on the same table Willie did it on.
3
It would be easier on that table.

I hate watching slow players but *I'M* a slow player! :-)
Wow, I thought Gabes last match at 2hrs was a long, drawn out affair....
Gabe has aged 20 years in 15 years. 15 years ago, he was a kid.
Gave used to have a weird stoke. Dropped his upper arm.
What really annoys me is when a guy chalks his stick 2 3 4 or more times on 1 shot. That's why I like Mika, sometimes only chalks after 2 or 3 shots
When do the Gays play? after this?
This is like watching paint dry.
Too much commentary
Dalton
😊
It's BS they can barely bump a ball and it's a legal safety. They could do that all night. You should be required to contact a ball and a rail.
not only are both players painfully slow neither one of them knows how to play str8 pool.
Gabe had a 63 ball run that was absolutely textbook straight pool. What match did you watch?
