Can I just say how incredibly beautiful it was to watch a male western rider/trainer use light pressure and release methods. And an explanation of how to correctly and ethically use the whip as a tool/aid in communication and only if what you are asking is not originally being heard by the horse. Thank you for this.
Thanks to this video I had a major breakthrough with my mustang yesterday. She locks up and refuses to go forward. I’ve been coached to “keep kicking until she goes” “she’s just being stubborn” “whip her until she moves her feet”. That’s not me. I’ve always wanted a partner instead of a servant. She’s such an amazing animal and tries so hard to give me what I want but I don’t always know how to communicate correctly. Yesterday when she stopped and locked up I let us stand there for 30 seconds and then ever-so-gently squeezed my legs. There’s was a slight pause and then she moved forward willingly!!! No ears back, no tension buildup, no power struggle! It was beautiful. I could feel an understanding. Because of what I learned in this video (light touch for responsiveness) I removed a huge barrier between my horse and myself. So simple but seemed like magic. We repeated this for about 20 minutes, stopping, pausing, squeezing, and walking on. Thank you, thank you, thank you from both of us.
I am still learning how to communicate correctly with my two mustangs. The trainer that is helping me has a saying that I have a hard time following or don't know how to go about it depending on what I am trying to get my horse to do. She tells, not only me, but to other students, "Do less first. The more you start with, the more complicated the tasks become for you, and the more confused your horse becomes. This results in both of you becoming anxious and frustrated, which will slow down or even bring progress to a stand still. If your horse does not understand what you are asking, then just find a different way to ask. There is more than one way to ask a horse to do a task since each horse is an individual."
I have the same problem with my mare! She keeps stopping and refusing to go. I know it’s not a lack of respect or pain she is just pretty dull I have been doing it for a while and it is working great but it has been a while since I have rode her because of the weather so today is going to be a refresher and we will see how it goes!
I have gypsies. Gypsies are LAAAZZZYYYY. Your intro is hysterical, and what I do all the time. And yes, the finger poke works. LOL. But it's surprising how "unresponsive" they can be at times. Lol.
Omg, this is a carbon copy of the behaviour of my 4 year old Irish Cob! I have her since 4 months. Bought her from people who could not do anything with her. She simply ignored everything they asked from her and when the they put reaaly high pressure on her she became agressive. I’ve started completely from scratch with her, working along similar lines like you show (having experience with my other Irish Cob). But your videos helped me quite a lot with some issues and she has made a lot of progress now. Please continue the good work!!
My boy is the same. 19 year old fjord gelding who is completely desensitized to hard pressure. And when a trainer put more and more pressure on him to get him to listen, he pinned her against a fence. He let her go as soon as i entered the space and asked. She then told me he was dangerous and should be euthanized. I have been working with him from the ground up, starting from scratch to teach him using the least amount/lightest of pressure.
Great intro! Fun fact: not only horses are like that; my 8yr old Pittie-lady can just be like that. By the way, i don´t think there really are "dull" horses. They either need more time to learn, a slightly different way to do so, or already have been trained in a false manner, so they don´t know how to respond to gentle touch and/or command ("hard skin"). Dull horses definitely exist. Think about all the school horses, ridden by many different riders, many who aren't yet balanced. Constant leg bumping and face tugging they learn to tune out. Another example is a horse at my barn who was gelded late, so he can be pushy. He has been through so much desensitization, even taking part in several police horse clinics. As a result, any non physical cues he'll ignore, like a swinging rope or waving hand. Even physical cues like gentle pressure are often ignored, because he's been sacked out with everything from ropes to tarps. This video is perfect for him!
Thanks for this video! I have a question of understanding. In the reinforcing stage: If the horse doesn't respond to the light feel, you add rhythmic pressure in form of a little tap or touch. What do you do if the horse still doesn't respond? Do you tap only once and wait for him to respond on the light feel? Or do you repeat tapping him, like every 2 seconds or so, until he responds?
Colts playing do that when they push while the other one pushes back and when they want to finish playing they use quick sharp responses, to get the other to jump and move quicker and go away.
Good video, you have a gift for explaining things. That horse really cracked me up, I had a feeling that he really wanted to be a bad boy but he didn't dare. lol
We have a lot of this type in the UK and in riding schools, they usually have more woah than go and are known for being lazy. I think they just switch off to nagging legs

You touched a little on yielding hindquarters but can you make a video of how to teach your horse to pivot on haunches, forehand and sidepass in the saddle.

I 'll do exactly as you advised the next time I' ll have that problem. I see you 're not doing bad reinforcement and you complete my acknowledgement of what to do when your horse does not want to move. It happened to me on a old mare, at the horse school. I' m now an old equestrian with many health issues to deal with but I love horses from the depth of my heart ! We, the mare and myself on her saddle, were walking nicely in the arena and suddenly she stopped. Nothing to do. I thought it could be intestines or something like that because she never had done anything like that before but no, that was like a test or a strike.😅😅 I was feeling a bit stupid, to kick her and move my chore silly too. The instructor let me solve the problem at first but when she saw nothing happened she lent me a whip and I gave her a small ( I dislike whipping !) touch with it and it was the end of the bad story. And now I saw all the video and I see I did not made a too bad thing with this mare whose name is Rebelle. 😁👌🏻 Squeeze, touch and as soon as the horse is responsive, stop all. 😊🐴 I too try to build a partnership with horses. Not use them as instruments like I learned when I was ten, about 50 years ago. I 'm very old but... instinctively I always have wanted to build another kind of relationship with horses. Now in 2022, it becomes possible and I 'm happy with it ! ☺️ My other mare, the one I really love and her too, was a horse racer and she 's not loved by most of other people but we have built this bond. She recognise me and she' s happy when I 'm riding her. Unfortunately my seat is bad now and I lost my balance two times, including a bad fall. Then I lost confidence in myself... This is hard to live when you were having a natural good seat ! :(
Haha! This came at the perfect time! And my girl is a Drum filly, so half Gypsy and half Shire, so cracks me up that he's a Gypsy cross too...lm having a hard time getting her to move! This helps tho, ty!
I kinda have to laugh at this...my gelding is like the beginning with EVERYONE but me😂The "trainer" who rode him literally beat him with spurs so he ignored any cue to move(like you could beat the tar out of him and we wouldn't even move!) so 6 months out to pasture and we started over from the bottom up. He is now almost 21yrs old and since the kids rode him for over 12yrs...if he don't think you can take it he won't do it. For me he will because I think I accidently taught him a cue...a double bump with the right leg after my knee surgery...but it works!

What if you gently push and they push back or strike out. Mine used to never do this until I added a 2nd horse. If I get between them at the trailer, he has tried smashing me. Caught me off guard!

Thanks for you video! My horse who I just starting learning. Understands back en turning like in this video. But when I ask him to go forward he doesn't seem to understand he won't move his legs. I already try to practice so much on the ground than he also doesn't understand how to go forward. Only if I would walk in front of him. But as soon as I try this next to him or behind he doesn't move anymore
Morning Ryan. LOVE your work. I use a very similar method for dull horses but when the light tap doesn’t work, I escalate bit harder and harder and harder until horse moves and then release. Am wondering, what would you do next if you get No response from that 1 light tap
still appreciate all the info but.....I would love to see this demonstration with a horse that actually totallly refuses to move once you're in the saddle.....like mine !
@@mihakabercic4457 Sure, unfortunately though there are still too many people using them only to force their will upon the horse rather than a device for smartly directing and gentle training.
I´d try approaching things that spook the horse first while walking next to it, before being on it´s back. Beside that you may try having a secure, selfconfident rider and horse by your side showing how it´s done properly. Horses often learn by watching their own kind.
OH yeah! Lol I once went for a trail ride on vacation on a dull, bored cob. When everyone went into a canter, he wouldn't, so the guide said to tap his hip with the reins. I didn't expect it to work so well and almost got left behind!
Technically, yes, but I would recommend it. It also depends on the kind of reins of course, but you're really just supposed to tap. Not hit. And tapping with the reins is something horses are often desensitised to, so it only works if you hit them, not tap them. But please do not hit your horse with reins
This is my unbroke mule. You can wave a bag over snd over in her face and she'll just sit like there looking at me like I'm a peasant. No fear. Just silently laughing and judging me.
I have a 4 yr old tennessee Walker knows how to longe but won't ,I know it's a respect issue ,he's a dominant gelding, he might run a lap or two ,add pressure he locks up ,every thing else doing ok ,any videos on respect and longing thank you
But what do you do if they won’t go even when you are giving leg pressure and tapping. I rode a horse yesterday and she just stopped every time I asked for the trot. Tapping with the crop didn’t work. I felt like I was between a rock and hard place. I didn’t want to give up because I felt like if I stopped or got off, she would think all she has to do is not go and she will be free to do as she pleases. But I didn’t want to just keep kicking and tapping either. Any suggestions?
Groundwork. See if your horse will trot in hand or on the lunge. That's always the first step. It could also be a pain issue. Trotting can be pretty difficult for a horse that's in pain, especially with a rider on top
I'm very tall 5'11" with long legs and they go past my guys belly. I have a difficult time with kicks because of the space. Do you recommend bumper spurs? My gelding is 16.1
i have this problem when bareback with my 14.1hh pony (i’m 5’5 also extremely long legs) anddd i’ve just taught her to use my calf’s as she’s really round too so my legs hang down but if u can use spurs and be able to control the pressure too then go for it
If you use the inside thigh muscle instead, he'll learn to move off of that.. you don't have to squeeze it, just flex it.. it will also help keep your knees forward and not rolling out.
That’s a good question and basically if he’s kicking out it means he doesn’t understand what the appropriate response to that pressure is. Would be great video to make. I´d dare say handling a yearling is very similar to "handling" a teenager. And i´d suggest cutting down on the treats; a gentle pat and/or taking the pressure off the horse is likely more effective. You may give it a try. Greetings from Germany.

I wouldn't bother changing that horse. I'd just place him in my home as a conversation piece.

Morning Ryan. LOVE your work. I use a very similar method for dull horses but when the light tap doesn’t work, I escalate bit harder and harder and harder until horse moves and then release. Am wondering, what would you do next if you get No response from that 1 light tap

If you "need " to have spurs on, there´s something seriosly wrong.You shouldn´t have to wear them at all. My opinion.

@@mihakabercic4457 Sure, unfortunately though there are still too many people using them only to force their will upon the horse rather than a device for smartly directing and gentle training.
Do you have tips for horses that get nervous and lose their patience while riding obstacles? Like opening a fence or something like that?
I´d try approaching things that spook the horse first while walking next to it, before being on it´s back. Beside that you may try having a secure, selfconfident rider and horse by your side showing how it´s done properly. Horses often learn by watching their own kind.

The only time I have trouble getting him to move is when he decides to stand on my foot.
Could a similar touch be achieved with the end of the rein when riding in the saddle if a stick isn't available?
OH yeah! Lol I once went for a trail ride on vacation on a dull, bored cob. When everyone went into a canter, he wouldn't, so the guide said to tap his hip with the reins. I didn't expect it to work so well and almost got left behind!
Technically, yes, but I would recommend it. It also depends on the kind of reins of course, but you're really just supposed to tap. Not hit. And tapping with the reins is something horses are often desensitised to, so it only works if you hit them, not tap them. But please do not hit your horse with reins
My horse moves when I push her just not when I apply pressure without physical touch

I have a 4 yr old tennessee Walker knows how to longe but won't ,I know it's a respect issue ,he's a dominant gelding, he might run a lap or two ,add pressure he locks up ,every thing else doing ok ,any videos on respect and longing thank you
But what do you do if they won’t go even when you are giving leg pressure and tapping. I rode a horse yesterday and she just stopped every time I asked for the trot. Tapping with the crop didn’t work. I felt like I was between a rock and hard place. I didn’t want to give up because I felt like if I stopped or got off, she would think all she has to do is not go and she will be free to do as she pleases. But I didn’t want to just keep kicking and tapping either. Any suggestions?
Groundwork. See if your horse will trot in hand or on the lunge. That's always the first step. It could also be a pain issue. Trotting can be pretty difficult for a horse that's in pain, especially with a rider on top

I'm very tall 5'11" with long legs and they go past my guys belly. I have a difficult time with kicks because of the space. Do you recommend bumper spurs? My gelding is 16.1
i have this problem when bareback with my 14.1hh pony (i’m 5’5 also extremely long legs) anddd i’ve just taught her to use my calf’s as she’s really round too so my legs hang down but if u can use spurs and be able to control the pressure too then go for it
also in that situation a long spur would not be terrible again if u can control the amount of pressure

If you use the inside thigh muscle instead, he'll learn to move off of that.. you don't have to squeeze it, just flex it.. it will also help keep your knees forward and not rolling out.

I´d dare say handling a yearling is very similar to "handling" a teenager. And i´d suggest cutting down on the treats; a gentle pat and/or taking the pressure off the horse is likely more effective. You may give it a try. Greetings from Germany.
