  • In this video I do some much needed maintenance on my home-built fume hood in advance of doing a big gold drop. I replaced the blower and re-caulked the joint where the exhaust comes out of the box. I also briefly go over how I built it. Please visit www.mdpub.com/U... for more information.

    It's good that you think 6 months ahead.

    Good deal. I need to build that into my shop for some refining experiments.

    So as a cool little tip or trick, if you want to make your motor last pretty much forever;
    Build yourself a good Venturi valve out of PVC pipes from Home Depot. I built myself a 4 inch one using a 4” Y pipe and I blow the air at high speed through the straight piece of the tube and the Y intersecting piece is connected to my fume hood, That creates a vacuum, bringing all the fumes out, and they never touch the motor. I run a larger blower fan (one of those big ones for bounce houses) with a variable speed controller, and this allows me to run at lower speeds to get same airflow out, thus being quieter all around.
    You can even run a replacement aluminum grid type filter at the end of your exhaust that has a lot of surface area to consume some of the fumes, and every year or two, throw it into a bucket of hcl and pull small amounts of PMs out normally lost through fumes over time :)

    You might consider adding a y-adapter that uses a Venturi effect to draw out the gases. You need a more powerful blower but it will last forever.

    You need a sodium hydroxide cell between the fume Hood and The fan not only to save your equipment but also for the environment the scrubber can be as simple as a plastic tote with a wicking cloth or a Venturi recirculating system to make a mini swamp cooler scrubber

    I was going to say build a Venturi system also, something like you would see on a suction dredge. The only concern I would have since yours goes out instead of up is that you make sure you don't have any wind blowing back into the pipe .

    I don't know if this will work with air but instead of the blower being inline could it be set up like the suction nozzle on a gold dredge?

      I put a link to the blower in the video description. amzn.to/3Nehbe5 The fume hood is about 2 ft X 2 ft X 2ft 3 in. It's a little small, but I don't think anyone has a fume hood big enough for everything they want to do.

    I need to build a nice hood. Working outside is a bit limiting.
    Any interest in a toll refine? I have a couple buckets full of connectors of multiple types. Wondering if the eco gold X would do.
