    Hermann Oberth, the German/Romanian rocket scientist responsible for inspiring Von Braun, published a book in 1923 that explained how space travel is achievable in theory mathematically. Oberth's theoretical work galvanized the German public, which subsequently spurred significant advances in the field of rocketry.

      Correct Jeff. The book was named "Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen" (1923) "The rocket to the planetary spaces"
      or maybe the enhanced version named "Wege zur Raumschiffahrt" (1929) "Ways to space travel".

      He wanted to send rockets and people to the stars. But when you work the military, yes will use rockets to kill other people. I have read comments on other sites that state Wernher von Braun "was a member of the Nazi party." That is false. When I met him in Malibu, CA in 1971-72, as part of Pepperdine's program of bringing well-known personalities to the campus, the question was asked, "Were you ever a Nazi? Did you ever join Hitler's party?" to which von Braun responded, "No. Emphatically no. I was repeatedly urged to join, but because of Hitler's eagerness to have the rocket science knowledge, they left me alone to do my work. I avoided becoming a Nazi." I believed him. He was a very charismatic figure. Quite good-looking even as he aged. I was pleased to have met him.

Only vonBrauns Army and gouvernment turned into something even more horrible then the other ones. Having said that, it wasn't the SS who dropped two nuclear bombs on cities with civilians, burning 200000+ man, woman and children.
      If you blame him for it, blame all of them. He didn't oppose Hitler or the Nazis. That's plain bullshit. He just didn't care. But don't let the scientists on "the right side" of the hook. Think how many people Oppenheimer killed. Von Brauns achievements will forever be flawed by that history. And rightfully so.

    Please talk about Robert Hutchings Goddard! He was the father of rocket science, had the theory down before von Braun was even born. He patented the multi-stage rocket and a liquid-fuel rocket back at 1914.
    His 1919 monograph A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes is considered one of the classic texts of 20th-century rocket science. Goddard successfully applied three-axis control, gyroscopes and steerable thrust to rockets, to effectively control their flight.
    Although his work in the field was revolutionary, Goddard received very little public support for his research and development work. The press sometimes ridiculed his theories of spaceflight. As a result, he became protective of his privacy and his work.
    ps: Also he wasn't a nazi or a war criminal, so there's that.

    • @YOCARAJO100
      @YOCARAJO100 9 лет назад +1

      The father of rocket technology was peruvian scientist Pedro Paulet, he made the first modern rocket in 1900 and Von Braun in his biography recognized him as the true father of this new technology due he based his projects in the work and first liquid fuel motor made by the peruvian guy, sorry Demetrio the real father was a cholo not a jerry guy.

    • @DimitriosDenton
      @DimitriosDenton 9 лет назад +5

      YOCARAJO100 You could consider Pedro one of the fathers of rocketry, but not the real father (if such thing exists)
      Pedro Paulet was the first person to build a liquid-fuel rocket engine.
      Goddard was the first person to build a rocket. Multiple stages, liquid-fuel rocket engine, three-axis controls, gyroscopes and steerable thrust. All in one thing, that flew.

      Ron Lovell Let's get clear now, you saying that he should have been executed for his crimes means you think he had any power to change anything about the slave labour? Or he should had been executed just for being member of nazi party? You know in 1945 nazi party had 8.5 millions germans as members, a lot of people to exucute don't you think so? If you know anything about his actions that lead to the slave labour and deaths of those people please tell and please provide any source for me to check on that. I think we should be reasonable even when talking about nazi members, as not all of them were mass murderers or jew haters. Some saw other opportunities in a party that was supported the most in free elections that nazi party won. I have to admit i'm a bit biased because i really respect Wernher von Braun as an engineer, one of the best of 20 century i have to say. Still i think i'm being reasonable in my assumptions as i don't see any evidence that von Braun had any direct involvment in the slave labour. He was working in a base near baltic sea and the slave labour camp was in central germany so he certainly didn't have any command in the slave labour camp.

    • @mindzee83
      @mindzee83 9 лет назад +1

      Ron Lovell I think we both agree that a person can be sentenced when a person is proven guilty. So this seems a bit harsh of sentencing a man to death without proof of him doing anything at mass murder level. Your supposed proof is that Von Braun was the boss of engineers that built the v2 rocket, but i'm telling you once again he wasn't the commander of the slave work camp witch was far away from where Von Braun himself worked. Being a nazi doesn't equal a mass murderer in my case too. You can be called mass murderer if you murder or give orders or have ability to change others that are doing this. Do you know that Von Braun had any authority in the slave work camp? please share. Please provide more then just your usual "he was in nazi party and he worked as chief engineer in program that used slave labor".

    If you are to be a historian,You must always tell the truth no matter how ugly it may be. Otherwise you are only a propagandist and assume the same responsibility for the nastiness you cover up by not talking about it. It would have been OK to say "thousands of slave laborers were killed building V-2 rockets which were used to attack civilians in England and Belgium". And that good old Von Braun was OK with that. As an SS officer he even received awards from Adolph himself for his work. He did not ever have a broken arm, the cast was fake so that the US Army would go easy on him when he turned himself in. He sent his brother Magnus out to find an American detail to bargain with. Magnus found a Sargent and his men out on patrol. This Von Braun guy was an asshole of the largest proportions. And totally full of shit. He did not build or even design the Saturn V he and his team of nearly one hundred mostly Canadian (did you read that? Canadian) engineers left over from the Avro Arrow project conceived and designed the V. Then it was built by 39,000 common Joe's with their own hands working for hundreds of contractors. His bud Hebertus Strughold, the Father of Aviation Medicine, performed his experiments on concentration camp prisoners--including killing men by exposing them to extreme cold for extended periods of time before coming to the US in 1947 and thus being saved from an indictment in the Nuremberg Nazi trials, where 15 of his peers were found guilty, 3 executed for their atrocities.

    Verner von Browne was a nazi rocket scientist Who worked 13000 prisoners to death at peenem mundo And nordhausen, That being said to the best my knowledge While in the United States He was a decent Law abiding human being. I think I was Once taught that he actually spoke out against segregation in Huntsville In small groups of people he knew. Question, Do you have any knowledge on Whether Verner von Braun Gave any opinion On segregation in South ? As for the nazi rocket scientist comment, I have to remind myself that he had a Dark past. Why?, Because I think the Saturn 5 fully fueled rocket lifting off from the pad is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. No not in person I aint that old, I had a 3 disc set of 11,12 And a 5 disc set Of 15. Each lift off you can watch from 6 different angles.
    P. S. Apologise for any spelling, Grammar, Punctuation, Capitalization, and for not using Roman numerals.

    Von Braun was a Nazi and SS Officer who used this leverage towards his own ends. Was he wrong? Did he use slave labor to achieve his ends? Yes. However, without his vision, drive and expertise, we would not have achieved what we did when we did. It's likely the Russians would have executed him because he was a Nazi and SS Officer.
    Robert S. McNamara once said: "Sometimes you may have to engage in evil in order to do good." This is one of those times, and while I don't condone this, it bears mentioning. I appreciate Amy for showing him with the Nazis and telling this even on a benign scale. History and the truth isn't nice or pretty, but it is the truth and history.

      Not quite. Goddard preferred "waterski" scheme (fuel and oxi tanks set behind the engine), while von Braun used more classic scheme (fuel and oxi tanks set before the engine). However, the engine is likely to be based on Goddard's work, but it's only natural in how the tech development goes. The same thing was with planes, cars, ships and so on...

    There are people who will happilly tell you that the V2 program wasn't primarily a Nazi idea (which is true, since von Braun's group of hobbyists received funding from the German army since before Hitler even took power, ans the SS only came in realtively late in the war), that von Braun wasn't really a Nazi since he didn't internalize their ideology (which is also true) and thus he is without fault. Fuck that.
    He was something much worse than a Nazi. He was an opportunist of the worst kind. Of the kind who is willing to step on people and even accept their DEATH to further his own goals. I'm not even talking about the dead and crippled in London and other cities his rockets laid to waste. No, civilian casualities were pretty much a sad reality of the war, and if you were going to fault him for that, every single bomber pilot needs to be considered a war criminal. What I'm talking about is the fact that not only did he join the NSDAP (Nazi Party) and the FUCKING SS (!!!) to get what he wanted from the powers that be, no, he actively used slave labor and was willing to accept that the engines for his "superweapon" were assembled by starving, mistreaded concentration camp inmates. And no, they didn't just do a little work on the side vor his project, internment camps and factories where built specifically for the V2 program, and he knew all too well what was going on. Hundreds of people died thousands suffered unspeakable atrocities, while von Braun continued to kiss Himmlers ass, despite knowing that Nazi ideology was bullshit.
    Unquestionably a technical genius and a pioneer of space exploration. His qualities as an engineer are beyond any doubt. As for his character... well... fuck him with a cactus!
