- I know the precise day and time that Soft Kill burst through into my consciousness. I was attending the Cruel World festival in Pasadena CA on the 14th of May of 2022. To be honest, I had set up at a different stage waiting for Black Marble's set. I hadn't had time to complete my homework to get the intel on all of the bands that were going to play. And since you often have to sacrifice one thing or another at these things, I knew for a fact that I wasn't going to be at the stage where Soft Kill would be playing because I'd been waiting for several years to see Black Marble.
In the end, I was just thankful to get to see Soft Kill off the side because they sounded so incredible and totally blew me away. Soft Kill was pretty much all I listened to on my drive back to Las Vegas for the flight back to Canada. And since then, they have been in near constant rotation. So when their Spring of 2024 tour was announced and I found out that they would be in the Twin Cities, I knew I had to be there. And Madison WI, only 4-5 hours away the next night? count me in.
As a child of the 80s, Soft Kill just hit the mark in every manner possible, a gorgeous hybrid of darkwave, post-punk and old school goth. Tobias Grave, can sound eerily like Robert Smith's plaintive croon but without phony affectations. I have literally listened to their entire discography front to back more times than I care to admit.
As Tobias mentions during the show, he has had his struggles with addiction and its many harms. So a show like this is an affirmation of the power of recovery. The show was moving, uplifting and pure catharsis. If you have a chance to get out there and see Soft Kill please do yourself a favor and make it happen. This is a band that deserves a wide audience. I'm already hoping for my next opportunity. As always, please support these bands by buying their merch and getting out there to see them on tour! Soft Kill are the definition of DIY, with many unique vinyl offerings, etc.
