To rotate all the disks to the right you just need any thin flat long piece of metal that fits in the square. LPL on his other videos use a dimple rake but that’s just a long square metal stick. As for the tool, if this particular core (style of lock) becomes popular enough, the market will respond and the tool to pick it will be widespread. LPL and BosnianBill actually collaborated with Sparrow, a popular lockpick company, to mass produce LPL&BB’s famous disc detainer picking tool.
What you might not know about moomins is that they are really particular about licensing. You can't just pay them a small fee and slap some moomins on a cheap cash grap product. Anything with an official moomin on it is going to be fairly expensive, and many moomin products are targeted at adults.
This is why I was ecstatic when I found a set of moomins mugs at my local thrift store! And I'm in the states where it's hard to find much of anything when it comes to merch of them.

Actually during one work trip in US decade ago to one industrial site, my Abloy lock was "not safe enough" to lock out the electric feed of a industrial machine. Luckily the factory safety guys loaned me a Masterlock so I could work safely. The lock was using the exact same frame and abloy classic core as this Moomin edition.
Maybe the trolliest part about it being Moomin-lock is that the theme song of 90's show makes a point about how Moomins don't lock their doors at night.
The letter even explicitly referenced that at the end. “We became even more suspicious, when we remembered that in the Finnish version of the Moomin theme song, they sing that the Moomin house is not locked for the night.”

For context: This isn't a toy! It is perfectly normal in Finland to have everything Moomin-themed. Mugs suddenly get 50% more expensive if they have Moomin on them (and no, definitely NOT just kids have them). Socks for adults with Moomin? Hell, yeah! Cutlery? Yup. Cars?! Uh-huh! Actual high-quality drills and other building/home improvement tools? Yes, sir! Everything, I tell you. So, this lock having Moomin on it doesn't make it a toy. I'd also imagine the actual lock mechanism isn't plastic and the plastic itself is possibly more meant as a weather protection. You can see it as the equivalent of having a US-flag in every corner. Just way more decorative. The only thing I haven't seen Moomin-themed is xxx-toys, but it probably exists.

this lock is not only harder to defeat than a masterlock but as it seems its stronger than like 80% of locks he picks. Not only did it require a special tool but also took him a WHOLE minute and a half to beat which is incredible.

So the configuration of the core would be the same but the materials would be higher quality including the case? I would think on a higher security lock the core would have more difficult picking issues due to more pins or whatever. Still a very cool concept
Despite of the Moomin characters, and despite of the plastic surface, this is a real Abloy lock and not a toy. No ordinary burglar is going to pick it in a million years.
Yeah, I have an "in a pinch" kit that I only use if I absolutely must. I've opened a house and a car with it, both mine. I couldn't pick that lock without LPL's tool.
The lock has a plastic cover on top of a zinc body. It's not a "toy" but instead, it is a collectible version of the same lock without the figures painted on top. Moomins have a huge collectible value in the Nordics and it's hard to find a product that does not have a Moomin version made from them.
Indeed. I think the original plastic "shielded" lock with metal inside has the plastic to avoid scratching surface of the things you lock with it. Abloy just slapped Moomin pictures to this to make it nicer for children. And surprisingly, this variant with the Moomin picture is typically cheaper than the variant without the picture here in Finland. Usually the Moomin branding tweaks the price 150-200%.
I'm not finnish but I am from the Nordic countries, and I can tell you that even if I'm not much of a moomin fan, given the choice when abroad I would not hesitate to buy the more expensive Moomin product: what you're paying extra for isn't the children's branding but the seal of approval it stands for. Whether you're buying a water bottle or a pad lock, the product is guaranteed to be thoroughly tested and critiqued by an organization that is pathologically unable to think of short-term gain
Skipping the fact that it requires custom made tool and a lot of time to open in specific position, the fact that surprised me is that this padlock has 8 disks. Toy padlocks have 2-3 disks. Cheap ones have 4. Regular ones have 5. Better quality ones have 6-7. 8 disks are only in expensive padlocks.... and in Moomin one apparently.

The name 'ABLOY' is an abbreviation, an acronym really, from the original name: AB Lukko OY - translated it reads 'Locks, LLC'. AB and OY are basically the same as LLC in swedish and finnish, and the middle part 'lukko' is just that, 'lock'. It follows the great Finnish Tradition of Naming Things: Just Say What It Does.
I think the translation of the original name (AB Låsfabriken/Lukkotehdas OY) would be more like "The Lock Factory, Ltd." in both Finland-Swedish and Finnish. But your point remains! Nokia, for instance, was basically formed out of a hydroelectric/paper mill complex and two other companies called "Finnish Rubber Works" and "Finnish Cable Works"--basically the three things you need to make phone stuff. 🤣

I work for a 'company' and many years ago we realised that the master key to the site had somehow been compromised, and a few people obviously had one, who exactly they were wasn't totally clear. At that time all the locks were supplied by LockWood, anyway as the system had been compromised it was decided to re-key/re-lock the entire site, and as usual with contracts when the re-key was done we were given MasterLock's as the replacement. Within 6 months the problems started, locks would seize, bind and even fall apart, MasterLock boasted a lifetime warranty and so we started sending them back to the company that did the re-key, and asking for a replacement. This farce lasted about 4 years until surprising to no-one ever that company starting supplying us with Assa Abloy replacements (Assa Abloy had bought out LockWood) ... It's crazy how MasterLock even exists with the junk they peddle.

Master lock is a good and well known name to the average person so they probably make a lot of sales from hardware stores etc. Funny thing is most people buy electronic locks these days which are even easier to break into...
@@CaptainRon1913 over 4 years replacing a $5 lock every six months is $40 per lock. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the $5 lock is going to eventually cost you more than $60 if you're replacing it twice a year. Swapping to a $60 lock that lasts longer *and* provides better protection will save money not just on the lock itself but also on potential lost inventory. An easy decision for both the company and the lock supplier who I'm sure wasn't too pleased to be replacing those masterlocks constantly.
As a Finn living in Finland where Abloy locks are a standard and these are from the weaker end I'm always amazed at what is considered "secure" in US when looking at these videos.
It's way worse than you think sometimes. There are secure sites like water treatment plants with tubes of chlorine gas and an ability to mess with the drinking water supply; and they can have a proper Abloy lock or similar for the main gate; a shitty lock for where the chlorine tubes are stored. Now, since utility people sometimes need access to these places to get in and service 4G towers and other stuff there can be a really shitty lockbox; like a masterlock or something; with a key inside it for the real Abloy lock on the main gate. So what does the Abloy lock actually do? Nothing, because the key is inside a tiny tincan shitbox.
Well you have to realize that maybe 0.1-1% of thieves actually pick locks. A lock like this would survive literally one or two hits of a blunt object, why would you pick it? So lock picking is actually a really poor measure of a lock.
Some parts of the US are actually pretty paranoid, but their chosen form of defense is planning on shooting intruders rather than keeping them out in the first place.
@@soylentgreenb the mobile towers are locked with a much safer electrical abloy lock nowadays. They are all getting upgraded as we speak. I know a place where a kid tried to break the lock and didn't get it open so he climbed over the fence and committed aliven't that way
Just so you’re aware LPL, Moomin is a huge cultural phenomenon with a huge adult fanbase especially in finland. While this is “novelty” in some sense it should really be viewed more like Masterlock releasing a pink camo lock here in the US. While it is “more fun”, the intent is still for it to be used in regular use-cases. People have entire Moomin dinnerware sets, mailboxes, fashionware, steering wheel covers, luggage, the list goes on. Another good comparison would be how Hello Kitty/Sanrio merchandise is viewed snd used in japan. It is a “kids” thing technically but it is still taken completely seriously and enjoyed by nearly everyone not just kids.
I'm a Finn and that's an accurate description. It's not an exaggeration to say most people own a Moomin-themed mug. I've one where Muumipappa (Uncle Moomin? E: Apparently Moominpappa (Swedish)) is fishing.

That's the same core 90% Finns used on their house doors in eighties, we still mostly use abloy locks but those 1st tier locks are only used in padlocks anymore

Anything metal from Finland is almost always going to be impressive, even if its wrapped in plastic. This goes for both knifes, guns, music and also apparently locks.
Interesting, when I was in the Swedish army we used Abloy locks on our lockers, and they were used a lot on other sensitive doors like weapon storage rooms and tele communication stations.
In the Finnish army, we used Abloy locks because, well, you can't really get anything else in Finland, and why would you bother when Abloy is pretty much best you can get.
Abloy is the standard lock for just about every door here in Finland. House and appartement doors have the version with the black plastic thing on one end. Security is stronk.

I remember this show, one episode where the family didn't have a house, so the guy build it for them. Despite never done it before, and the house turns out wobbly, the family is happy to accept it since it is a big family and it is a house for them. Perfect family friendly show.

Contrast that to what the Swedish and Finish governments would do if you did that in real life. They would demolish the house for being built without a permit and violating the building code and also fine everyone involved for breaking the law. Not exactly a child's toy, but more of a popular brand tie-in for a simple storage lock. Moomin's have found their way into furniture, textiles, dishes, food containers, wall art etc. and are widely collected by all ages. - Their official product description names using this for toolboxes, tool sheds, apartment complex storage units. Finnish condos or apartment buildings often include separate storage room with the lease, even a separate cool storage (though these are not often featured in newer buildings) and you find these locks in those.
Same with Swedish appartement buildings, and locks for those storage units is mostly just a "this one is taken" sign rather than security. (at least the ones I've seen, at best they have fiberboard walls, more often than not it's chicken wire.)
@@jongustavsson5874 Sounds very much the same. In fact many times storage break ins at apartments don't involve even trying to break the lock but go through the chicken wire or poorly braced wood. I've seen one where they just bent the door till one of the hinges gave up. If other people reading this are confused: In apartments storage is behind the buildings own locks too but mostly the point is that you attempted to lock your own storage box (or garden shed) and thus insurance company will have to pay up a bit, regardless of lock quality.
@@jongustavsson5874 There's a reason why the saying "Locks keep honest people out" exists. It basically boils down to the idea that if a thief wants to get into something, they will find a way. Locks keep out curious people (I admit, I have peeked into other peoples storage when there was no lock) and to keep opportunistic thieves out. And so that if the place does get broken in to, the insurance has to pay at least something.
Exactly. It's a "gymlocker" padlock with a fashion statement. When I was a kid Moomins were HUGE - and I'm not even living in Finland - now people buy adult (no not that kind of adult) things with figures from their childhoom on them. Probably also higher priced than what I would consider childs toy. For a lock for a childs treasure chest (etc.) I'd just grab a random crap from a dollar store - they're more than secure enough for that purpose. Just saw the other day that my local dollar(-ish) store has chinese disc detainer locks on the menu - a perfect childs toy which compared to many MasterLocks actually give a little bit of resistance.
Putting an Abloy core in a plastic body for anything but a toy is kind of silly though. Sure, nobody will pick your lock, but a good shove will break it.
@@alexandrezani In general the Abloy bodies on lower end models aren't that great. I have broken both the old style and the newer style with two trench shovels. Trivially easy.
Abloy is actually one of the most common and respected lock brands in Finland. Even tho it may seem like a childs toy, many adults enjoy collecting or owning Moomin themed items. Most famous example would be Moomin mugs.
It's nice to see that Abloy locks atleast require some special tools as these locks are everywhere here in Finland. I'd like to see you open one of these with simpler instruments like just the tension retainer and a hairpin or such if it is possible!
It generally isn't possible without the tool. The tool he has is a variation of the 'vekotin'(or similar). Its still hard if you have the tool. Cops used to have lists of (criminal) people who knew how to use one and who knew how to make the tool. Supposedly the cops can/could also tell from insides of the lock if one had been used.

It's not really a thing here in the US. The show never aired here in the us, and I didn't see any of the books around either. I'm in my thirties, and I had never heard of it until about 2 years ago when a Canadian streamer I watch mentioned it and I had to Google it.
The Mumin books are the kind of children's books that are still worth the read as an adult. They are very well written and full of fantastic stories. And I would say that the original (I wouldn't really call them) comic strips were meant more for adults than children. They have a dark style to them and get pretty scary. The Mumins aren't really as rounded and nice as they got in the children's cartoons. Well worth the read.

When I was flat on my back in the hospital in Austria, my sister lent my mother her Moomin books, and she read them to me. I'd loved them as a kid, but they are even more special now.

There are early Moomins all the way back to the 1930s, but yes: it started as a comic book for grown-ups and then proceeded as text books for children, then a Japanese anime for even smaller children.

Yup, that's what our minimum security locks tend to be like. Those cores are used on desk drawers, gym lockers and similar low(ish) security uses nowdays. Old houses also still have those cores unless they have been updated. I can't recall the last time I've heard of robbery by picking locks here in Finland. Even that core tends to be too much for them.
Maybe the most dangerous thing about using this lock is, instead of fearing of someone to pick the lock to break in, to fear someone being determined enough to pick the lock just to take the lock itself instead 😂
To all of you calling Moomins hippos: NO! NO! NO! In fact, in one of the comic strips, they were mistaken for hippos and locked up in a zoo. A higly educated zoologist who knew them gave a sworn statement that Moomins definitely *are not* hippos. 😊
This is an abloy classic model key, which was used a lot many years back (and now is mostly used in padlocks). I would love to see picking a lock with an abloy sento or exec type key! Pretty much 95% of all door keys in finland are that model and they seem to be easy to make so you need only one key for many doors, eg the garage and front door. Or in an apartment building where everyone's personal key opens the entrance door.
I thought the same thing! I kinda chuckled when I realized our locks have been upgraded twice or trice since that basic version. Id love to see how he would fare with our current Iloq-lock.. it requires a small current of electricity to be opened, generated when inserting the key, plus the very confusing looking key, notches everywhere.
@@janemiettinen5176 You can't really compare an iLOQ lock to a traditional mechanical lock. The notches on the iLOQ key interact with the lock's dynamo gears. By inserting the key into the keyhole, you generate the electricity needed to operate the lock. To my understanding, all the keys are physically identical and the actual "key" is the coded information the lock reads from the key. So, if you wanted to pick it, my guess is that you would need a 'key' that could brute-force every possible code combination, similar to cracking a password database. I assume that if the iLOQ is designed intelligently, it would only allow a new code attempt about once per second. This would mean that randomly trying codes would be practically impossible.
@@OtsukaOde Indeed iLOQ keys have always physically identical keys and all the smarts are in the electronics. First gen lock core had some vulnerabilities but I think later models fixed those, too. However, iLOQ system requires purchasing pretty expensive tool to recode the keys and locks which makes it more expensive to use for individual houses than top-level Abloy stuff here in Finland. For apartment buildings, iLOQ makes sense because you only need at most one programming tool per building.
My bestfriends wife is Finnish, and she's obsessed with the Moomins. Being American I'd never heard of the Moomins till she gave me a full set of coffee cups with these hippo's on them for Christmas. She even has a tattoo of them on her leg. This is the first time I've seen something with the Moomins on it outside of her and the coffee cups I have 😂.

That core seems like it's no joke. It took an highly experienced picker, with custom tools and ideal conditions a not insignificant amount of time to open. Give this thing a lock body with actual resistance to destructive attacks (and with a core of that quality I am honestly surprised that it's actually a plastic body, and not just a shell over actual metal), and it'd be a serious contender for a lock of that size. Edit: Some people in the comments are saying this thing is in fact a zinc lockbody with a plastic shell, so yeah, this is actually a solid lock through and through (and apparently on the low end of what they make).
I just watched a segment of "Modern Marvels" on tv(just happened to see it while looking for something else). The segment was on locks, and they showed how Master Lock is made. It made out like the brand was of the highest security quality. Their manufacturing facility was quite impressive. It's a shame the company has used such a poor locking system. They have spent a fortune on everything but the actual purpose of the lock-- security.
It's all about making the manufacturing process as efficient as possible, even designing the locks in a way that's easy to mass produce for the most competitive pricing.
Our storage unit sells Master Locks. Damn things never opened right with a key - LPL opens them faster with picking tools than I could with the key because they were off-balance and kept jamming.

I got inspired to pick up lock picking as a hobby by watching your videos. I started 3 days ago and can now pick master lock no 5 commercial series in about 15-30 seconds. It’s so satisfying when your tension bar starts to move when you get all the pins set. Really fun and a VERY useful hobby. The best part is. It’s SUPER cheap to start.

Abloy Classic isn't just a type of disc detainer lock, it's the first and original disc detainer lock invented in 1907 by Emil Henriksson, the guy who founded Abloy. That lock was also allegedly actually pickproof for like 70-80 years.

I am from the Baltics, but children's books about Moomins from Finland were amazing! Very, very good concept and awesome adventures. Second amazing book was Pippi the Longstocking from Sweden. And now I'm thinking of yet other great children's books from the Northern countries... If you grew up reading Northern countries children literature, you had an amazing childhood!
Funny enough the first lock I ever learned to pick was a "pick resistant" Master lock pad lock, I also learned to pick with hair pins not actual picks, so now I just keep a few hair pins in my wallet incase I forget my house keys or a friend needs to put up their hair
I'd buy the lock just for the Moomins. I grew up on Moomin books in the 50s and when my son was born in the 70s I bought all the books to read to him. They are great stories even after all these years. Having the lock in use around the house would be reliving a fun memory.
What I love about this is that here in Finland this lock is basically considered the absolute minimum level of security for padlocks, or locks in general, anything that needs real security has much more secure lock cores, my apartment door for example has a lock that's pretty much impossible to pick as it's part electronic part mechanical (and I live in a very cheap apartment)
I did see a video on youtube of someone picking one using a laptop and modified key, more like "hacked" one, but man is every thief gonna have that? I'm from the USA but live in finland now, and I'm very happy to hear that iLOQ is opening operations in the USA this fall. They have in Canada already but there they only sell NFC powered locks, and I hope in the USA they sell the keys like we have here.

Hopefully with channels like LPL, Bosnian Bill, etc showing how easy and fast they are to defeat and bypass and highlighting some better and more secure alternatives the US lock market will be forced to adapt and move towards higher security alternatives 🤔
The Moomin books are a sort of personality detector for me. Not many people know them, but those who do and also love em, are always quite extraordinary minds to be around :)
You know the lock is legit when all the burglars rather go trough window or use chainsaw on the door it self rather than try to pick it. Alternatively if it paddle lock bolt cutters, two wrenches or grinder is preferred method on standard classics, but as saying goes, "locks are for honest people and locks are just for insurance". This specially so since any standard perp will leave signs of break and entry. Smartest ones take the lock with them and dispose it, but still usually leave enough marks to door so it goes trough insurance. Also note Finnish doors are almost always made from thick hardwood or least full pine construction, so you need least a chainsaw to get trough, unlike US paper filled doors. Some Russian doors are even sturdier having steel plate inside to protect from bullets.

The Moomins (Swedish: Mumintroll) are in the first place the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson, originally published in Swedish. Very kind tales for children, somehow they remind me of Winnie the Pooh.
Not at all kind tales originally. The text books for children came long after the bohemian, dark and trashy comic books for adults, which also were featured as continuation story comic strips in newspapers. After the text books came the Japanese anime series for very small children.
@@jammi__ This is not at all true though. The text books didn't come out "long after" the comic strips. In fact the first text book featuring the Moomin trolls was released earlier than the comics. Both the books, picture books and the comic strips were however being published concurrently for quite a while as well. There were two anime series made, but none of them were the first tv adaptations based on the books.
@@jammi__ I assume you were thinking of the very famous one from the 90's, yes? Before that there was also another anime adaptation made in 1969. Hayao Miyazaki was onboard that one as an animator. Although it's a lot more loosely based on the source material, and Tove didn't really like it. Actually, I just remembered there was a third anime that continued the 1969 one called Shin-Moomin, and was basically a more wholesome adaptation compared to the first one. There are also plenty of other tv-shows that were made before the 90s anime, like the Polish one where the characters are made out of felt (1978) and the Swedish ones where actors are in costume (1969 and 1973). In 1959 there was a puppet show made of them in Germany as well.
@@alipludepom There were also two adaptations in Soviet Union, a felt puppet one (also made in 1978, maybe it's the one you mean? It was made in Moscow) and a 2D one in 1980-1983. It made Moomins super popular in the USSR.
Uh, yes. An Abloy Classic core is a 7 disc core with reasonable-but-not-insane tolerances and false gates on all discs, which is why he had to go over the stack twice. Their newer Abloy Protec 2 core is the same basic layout but manufactured with so stupidly high tolerances that only a few people have demonstrated a valid pick.
A Finn here chiming in: It's not a novelty lock or a toy, it's just a real Abloy lock with Moomin branding. Moomin are a big thing in Finland and even adults buy stuff with the branding. They sell this lock without the branding as well and I've had one on my locker at work since forever.
I only discovered your channel maybe a year ago and am only an occasional viewer but I was still surprised to see that this lock required you to have it clamped down to properly work on it. That took you longer and required more effort to unlock than any of the other locks I've seen you open in the videos that I have seen.
Seems like Abloy locks tend to get good amount of reputation from LPL. We had a similar plactic cased locks outdoors without any cover for years. Among the best locks to use. Bad side is the classic key, getting blanks for it got too easy and with little practise copying one wasn't impossible. Would be interesting to see you battle against new Abloy editions. Or atleast get your oppinion from them. For classic has been there for decades allready and after that there has been several other versions from them.

LPL hasn't picked a single Abloy core besides the one hundred year old Classic core design. I bet it would be impossible for him to pick (but not defeat) let's say Abloy Sentry or Protec2.

Lpl understood it wrong. It's just a regular lock with plastic shell that has moomins in it. And moomins in finland is so huge that they have all kinds of merch that also adult people own seriously. But yeah abloy is pretty damn good company
I'm a proud Finn, again! I think there's an entry level Abloy padlock inside, and it's fitted inside a plastic cover. That's why it feels flimsy, but also makes it very cheap to manufacture, compared with the assumed standard lock inside.
In central Europe Abloy Classic locks were all the rage for medium-security applications several decades ago. The city of Vienna used them throughout their service provider's facilities (electrictiy supplier, public transport company, etc.), some in order to keep unauthorised people out of places like substations and main fuse boxes (ahead of the meter), others as mundane as staff lockers. The main fuse boxes were changed over to Evva K013 in the 90s or even 80s and when the rights on that key expired, changed for a massively complex system called ET-08 in 2008. Just to give you an idea how obscure these locks have become here.
This is honestly one of the best locks I've ever seen. Requiring preparation with a blank key, something to hold it steady while using a custom tool that needs both hands to use and over a minute of careful finessing to learn it's secrets? I remain convinced there is no such thing as an unpickable lock, but this one gets about as close as I think I've seen.
Moomin is popular everywhere, very much so throughout Scandinavia. One can find an abundance of merch, including locks but most notably of mugs :) There's a huge collector's market for moomin mugs from Arabia.
I'm sure I read on Yle's English news a few years ago that Moomin mugs are the Finnish druggie's shoplifting target of choice, being small, valuable, and easy to resell.
@@6yjjk The most expensive mug sold at a collectors auction was 27 000 (!) dollars. A relative collects and if financial probs would knock on the door, they can sell off a few mugs and it wouldn't be too shabby of a single time income.
I'm using a similar lock, very likely the same model, but without decals. Good to know it's not of the worst kind of locks! Besides with an unfortunately proven track record thieves will rather break the door instead of the lock. Despite multiple break ins I've had to replace the lock only once and that was because the lock (of a different brand) failed to open. I had to cut it with a saw.

To rotate all the disks to the right you just need any thin flat long piece of metal that fits in the square. LPL on his other videos use a dimple rake but that’s just a long square metal stick.
As for the tool, if this particular core (style of lock) becomes popular enough, the market will respond and the tool to pick it will be widespread. LPL and BosnianBill actually collaborated with Sparrow, a popular lockpick company, to mass produce LPL&BB’s famous disc detainer picking tool.
As well as someone holding the key for you, if you dont carry a damn vice with you.

What you might not know about moomins is that they are really particular about licensing. You can't just pay them a small fee and slap some moomins on a cheap cash grap product. Anything with an official moomin on it is going to be fairly expensive, and many moomin products are targeted at adults.
As a giant moomin fan and a collector of items, this is 100% true, owch ow my wallet.
It's still just a well known brand, and they have definitely priced most of their stuff with a brand tax.
This is why I was ecstatic when I found a set of moomins mugs at my local thrift store! And I'm in the states where it's hard to find much of anything when it comes to merch of them.

Actually during one work trip in US decade ago to one industrial site, my Abloy lock was "not safe enough" to lock out the electric feed of a industrial machine.
Luckily the factory safety guys loaned me a Masterlock so I could work safely. The lock was using the exact same frame and abloy classic core as this Moomin edition.
Maybe the trolliest part about it being Moomin-lock is that the theme song of 90's show makes a point about how Moomins don't lock their doors at night.
That used to be pretty common here in the country side of south-western Finland when I was a kid in the 80's and early 90's.
No need to do that when Papa is absolutely fucking strapped with a blunderbuss.

I'd also imagine the actual lock mechanism isn't plastic and the plastic itself is possibly more meant as a weather protection.

this lock is not only harder to defeat than a masterlock but as it seems its stronger than like 80% of locks he picks.
Not only did it require a special tool but also took him a WHOLE minute and a half to beat which is incredible.

Not really, high security padlocks here tend to have the Abloy Protec or Protec 2 cores in them, anything with the Abloy classic core is low to mid level security
So the configuration of the core would be the same but the materials would be higher quality including the case?
I would think on a higher security lock the core would have more difficult picking issues due to more pins or whatever.

Despite of the Moomin characters, and despite of the plastic surface, this is a real Abloy lock and not a toy. No ordinary burglar is going to pick it in a million years.
Yeah, I have an "in a pinch" kit that I only use if I absolutely must. I've opened a house and a car with it, both mine. I couldn't pick that lock without LPL's tool.

The lock has a plastic cover on top of a zinc body. It's not a "toy" but instead, it is a collectible version of the same lock without the figures painted on top. Moomins have a huge collectible value in the Nordics and it's hard to find a product that does not have a Moomin version made from them.
Indeed. I think the original plastic "shielded" lock with metal inside has the plastic to avoid scratching surface of the things you lock with it. Abloy just slapped Moomin pictures to this to make it nicer for children.
And surprisingly, this variant with the Moomin picture is typically cheaper than the variant without the picture here in Finland. Usually the Moomin branding tweaks the price 150-200%.
I'm not finnish but I am from the Nordic countries, and I can tell you that even if I'm not much of a moomin fan, given the choice when abroad I would not hesitate to buy the more expensive Moomin product: what you're paying extra for isn't the children's branding but the seal of approval it stands for. Whether you're buying a water bottle or a pad lock, the product is guaranteed to be thoroughly tested and critiqued by an organization that is pathologically unable to think of short-term gain

Skipping the fact that it requires custom made tool and a lot of time to open in specific position, the fact that surprised me is that this padlock has 8 disks.
Toy padlocks have 2-3 disks.
Cheap ones have 4.
Regular ones have 5.
Better quality ones have 6-7.
8 disks are only in expensive padlocks.... and in Moomin one apparently.

The name 'ABLOY' is an abbreviation, an acronym really, from the original name: AB Lukko OY - translated it reads 'Locks, LLC'. AB and OY are basically the same as LLC in swedish and finnish, and the middle part 'lukko' is just that, 'lock'.

I work for a 'company' and many years ago we realised that the master key to the site had somehow been compromised, and a few people obviously had one, who exactly they were wasn't totally clear. At that time all the locks were supplied by LockWood, anyway as the system had been compromised it was decided to re-key/re-lock the entire site, and as usual with contracts when the re-key was done we were given MasterLock's as the replacement.
Within 6 months the problems started, locks would seize, bind and even fall apart, MasterLock boasted a lifetime warranty and so we started sending them back to the company that did the re-key, and asking for a replacement. This farce lasted about 4 years until surprising to no-one ever that company starting supplying us with Assa Abloy replacements (Assa Abloy had bought out LockWood) ... It's crazy how MasterLock even exists with the junk they peddle.

Master lock is a good and well known name to the average person so they probably make a lot of sales from hardware stores etc. Funny thing is most people buy electronic locks these days which are even easier to break into...
@@CaptainRon1913 over 4 years replacing a $5 lock every six months is $40 per lock. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the $5 lock is going to eventually cost you more than $60 if you're replacing it twice a year. Swapping to a $60 lock that lasts longer *and* provides better protection will save money not just on the lock itself but also on potential lost inventory. An easy decision for both the company and the lock supplier who I'm sure wasn't too pleased to be replacing those masterlocks constantly.
As a Finn living in Finland where Abloy locks are a standard and these are from the weaker end I'm always amazed at what is considered "secure" in US when looking at these videos.
It's way worse than you think sometimes. There are secure sites like water treatment plants with tubes of chlorine gas and an ability to mess with the drinking water supply; and they can have a proper Abloy lock or similar for the main gate; a shitty lock for where the chlorine tubes are stored. Now, since utility people sometimes need access to these places to get in and service 4G towers and other stuff there can be a really shitty lockbox; like a masterlock or something; with a key inside it for the real Abloy lock on the main gate. So what does the Abloy lock actually do? Nothing, because the key is inside a tiny tincan shitbox.
Well you have to realize that maybe 0.1-1% of thieves actually pick locks. A lock like this would survive literally one or two hits of a blunt object, why would you pick it? So lock picking is actually a really poor measure of a lock.
Some parts of the US are actually pretty paranoid, but their chosen form of defense is planning on shooting intruders rather than keeping them out in the first place.

Just so you’re aware LPL, Moomin is a huge cultural phenomenon with a huge adult fanbase especially in finland. While this is “novelty” in some sense it should really be viewed more like Masterlock releasing a pink camo lock here in the US. While it is “more fun”, the intent is still for it to be used in regular use-cases. People have entire Moomin dinnerware sets, mailboxes, fashionware, steering wheel covers, luggage, the list goes on. Another good comparison would be how Hello Kitty/Sanrio merchandise is viewed snd used in japan. It is a “kids” thing technically but it is still taken completely seriously and enjoyed by nearly everyone not just kids.

That's the same core 90% Finns used on their house doors in eighties, we still mostly use abloy locks but those 1st tier locks are only used in padlocks anymore

Interesting, when I was in the Swedish army we used Abloy locks on our lockers, and they were used a lot on other sensitive doors like weapon storage rooms and tele communication stations.
Same in the Finnish army, both our lockers and weapon racks used Abloy padlocks.

So he builds house, but when the Mymble's family see it they think it was made for them. And move in, thus Moomin's problem is solved as well

They would demolish the house for being built without a permit and violating the building code and also fine everyone involved for breaking the law. Not exactly a child's toy, but more of a popular brand tie-in for a simple storage lock. Moomin's have found their way into furniture, textiles, dishes, food containers, wall art etc. and are widely collected by all ages. - Their official product description names using this for toolboxes, tool sheds, apartment complex storage units. Finnish condos or apartment buildings often include separate storage room with the lease, even a separate cool storage (though these are not often featured in newer buildings) and you find these locks in those.
Same with Swedish appartement buildings, and locks for those storage units is mostly just a "this one is taken" sign rather than security. (at least the ones I've seen, at best they have fiberboard walls, more often than not it's chicken wire.)
@@jongustavsson5874 Sounds very much the same. In fact many times storage break ins at apartments don't involve even trying to break the lock but go through the chicken wire or poorly braced wood. I've seen one where they just bent the door till one of the hinges gave up.
If other people reading this are confused: In apartments storage is behind the buildings own locks too but mostly the point is that you attempted to lock your own storage box (or garden shed) and thus insurance company will have to pay up a bit, regardless of lock quality.
@@jongustavsson5874 There's a reason why the saying "Locks keep honest people out" exists. It basically boils down to the idea that if a thief wants to get into something, they will find a way. Locks keep out curious people (I admit, I have peeked into other peoples storage when there was no lock) and to keep opportunistic thieves out.
And so that if the place does get broken in to, the insurance has to pay at least something.

Exactly. It's a "gymlocker" padlock with a fashion statement. When I was a kid Moomins were HUGE - and I'm not even living in Finland - now people buy adult (no not that kind of adult) things with figures from their childhoom on them. Probably also higher priced than what I would consider childs toy. For a lock for a childs treasure chest (etc.) I'd just grab a random crap from a dollar store - they're more than secure enough for that purpose. Just saw the other day that my local dollar(-ish) store has chinese disc detainer locks on the menu - a perfect childs toy which compared to many MasterLocks actually give a little bit of resistance.
Once I saw Abloy on the packaging I immediately knew this was no 'toy'. All our doors have the Novel style cylinder in them, great products.
Putting an Abloy core in a plastic body for anything but a toy is kind of silly though. Sure, nobody will pick your lock, but a good shove will break it.
@@alexandrezani In general the Abloy bodies on lower end models aren't that great. I have broken both the old style and the newer style with two trench shovels. Trivially easy.

Abloy is actually one of the most common and respected lock brands in Finland. Even tho it may seem like a childs toy, many adults enjoy collecting or owning Moomin themed items. Most famous example would be Moomin mugs.

It's nice to see that Abloy locks atleast require some special tools as these locks are everywhere here in Finland. I'd like to see you open one of these with simpler instruments like just the tension retainer and a hairpin or such if it is possible!
It generally isn't possible without the tool. The tool he has is a variation of the 'vekotin'(or similar). Its still hard if you have the tool. Cops used to have lists of (criminal) people who knew how to use one and who knew how to make the tool.
Supposedly the cops can/could also tell from insides of the lock if one had been used.

It's not really a thing here in the US. The show never aired here in the us, and I didn't see any of the books around either. I'm in my thirties, and I had never heard of it until about 2 years ago when a Canadian streamer I watch mentioned it and I had to Google it.
The Mumin books are the kind of children's books that are still worth the read as an adult. They are very well written and full of fantastic stories. And I would say that the original (I wouldn't really call them) comic strips were meant more for adults than children. They have a dark style to them and get pretty scary. The Mumins aren't really as rounded and nice as they got in the children's cartoons. Well worth the read.

To add, the moomins started out as an art project of Tove Jansson. They do art exhibitions of moomins!

Yup, that's what our minimum security locks tend to be like. Those cores are used on desk drawers, gym lockers and similar low(ish) security uses nowdays. Old houses also still have those cores unless they have been updated.
I can't recall the last time I've heard of robbery by picking locks here in Finland. Even that core tends to be too much for them.
Maybe the most dangerous thing about using this lock is, instead of fearing of someone to pick the lock to break in, to fear someone being determined enough to pick the lock just to take the lock itself instead 😂

This is an abloy classic model key, which was used a lot many years back (and now is mostly used in padlocks). I would love to see picking a lock with an abloy sento or exec type key! Pretty much 95% of all door keys in finland are that model and they seem to be easy to make so you need only one key for many doors, eg the garage and front door. Or in an apartment building where everyone's personal key opens the entrance door.
I thought the same thing! I kinda chuckled when I realized our locks have been upgraded twice or trice since that basic version. Id love to see how he would fare with our current Iloq-lock.. it requires a small current of electricity to be opened, generated when inserting the key, plus the very confusing looking key, notches everywhere.
@@janemiettinen5176 You can't really compare an iLOQ lock to a traditional mechanical lock. The notches on the iLOQ key interact with the lock's dynamo gears. By inserting the key into the keyhole, you generate the electricity needed to operate the lock. To my understanding, all the keys are physically identical and the actual "key" is the coded information the lock reads from the key. So, if you wanted to pick it, my guess is that you would need a 'key' that could brute-force every possible code combination, similar to cracking a password database. I assume that if the iLOQ is designed intelligently, it would only allow a new code attempt about once per second. This would mean that randomly trying codes would be practically impossible.
@@OtsukaOde Indeed iLOQ keys have always physically identical keys and all the smarts are in the electronics. First gen lock core had some vulnerabilities but I think later models fixed those, too.
However, iLOQ system requires purchasing pretty expensive tool to recode the keys and locks which makes it more expensive to use for individual houses than top-level Abloy stuff here in Finland. For apartment buildings, iLOQ makes sense because you only need at most one programming tool per building.

My bestfriends wife is Finnish, and she's obsessed with the Moomins. Being American I'd never heard of the Moomins till she gave me a full set of coffee cups with these hippo's on them for Christmas. She even has a tattoo of them on her leg. This is the first time I've seen something with the Moomins on it outside of her and the coffee cups I have 😂.

That core seems like it's no joke. It took an highly experienced picker, with custom tools and ideal conditions a not insignificant amount of time to open. Give this thing a lock body with actual resistance to destructive attacks (and with a core of that quality I am honestly surprised that it's actually a plastic body, and not just a shell over actual metal), and it'd be a serious contender for a lock of that size.
Edit: Some people in the comments are saying this thing is in fact a zinc lockbody with a plastic shell, so yeah, this is actually a solid lock through and through (and apparently on the low end of what they make).

I just watched a segment of "Modern Marvels" on tv(just happened to see it while looking for something else). The segment was on locks, and they showed how Master Lock is made. It made out like the brand was of the highest security quality. Their manufacturing facility was quite impressive. It's a shame the company has used such a poor locking system. They have spent a fortune on everything but the actual purpose of the lock-- security.
It's all about making the manufacturing process as efficient as possible, even designing the locks in a way that's easy to mass produce for the most competitive pricing.
Our storage unit sells Master Locks. Damn things never opened right with a key - LPL opens them faster with picking tools than I could with the key because they were off-balance and kept jamming.
Kinda strange merchandising given that the Moomins rarely, if ever, locked their doors. Heck, the last book was about the people in Moominvalley coming and making Moomin House their own while the Moomins were away!

I got inspired to pick up lock picking as a hobby by watching your videos. I started 3 days ago and can now pick master lock no 5 commercial series in about 15-30 seconds. It’s so satisfying when your tension bar starts to move when you get all the pins set. Really fun and a VERY useful hobby. The best part is. It’s SUPER cheap to start.

Abloy Classic isn't just a type of disc detainer lock, it's the first and original disc detainer lock invented in 1907 by Emil Henriksson, the guy who founded Abloy. That lock was also allegedly actually pickproof for like 70-80 years.

I'd buy the lock just for the Moomins. I grew up on Moomin books in the 50s and when my son was born in the 70s I bought all the books to read to him. They are great stories even after all these years. Having the lock in use around the house would be reliving a fun memory.

What I love about this is that here in Finland this lock is basically considered the absolute minimum level of security for padlocks, or locks in general, anything that needs real security has much more secure lock cores, my apartment door for example has a lock that's pretty much impossible to pick as it's part electronic part mechanical (and I live in a very cheap apartment)

I'm from the USA but live in finland now, and I'm very happy to hear that iLOQ is opening operations in the USA this fall. They have in Canada already but there they only sell NFC powered locks, and I hope in the USA they sell the keys like we have here.

The Moomin books are a sort of personality detector for me. Not many people know them, but those who do and also love em, are always quite extraordinary minds to be around :)

You know the lock is at least somewhat legit when LPL needs a "custom tool"
You know the lock is legit when all the burglars rather go trough window or use chainsaw on the door it self rather than try to pick it. Alternatively if it paddle lock bolt cutters, two wrenches or grinder is preferred method on standard classics, but as saying goes, "locks are for honest people and locks are just for insurance". This specially so since any standard perp will leave signs of break and entry. Smartest ones take the lock with them and dispose it, but still usually leave enough marks to door so it goes trough insurance.
Also note Finnish doors are almost always made from thick hardwood or least full pine construction, so you need least a chainsaw to get trough, unlike US paper filled doors. Some Russian doors are even sturdier having steel plate inside to protect from bullets.

The Moomins (Swedish: Mumintroll) are in the first place the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson, originally published in Swedish. Very kind tales for children, somehow they remind me of Winnie the Pooh.
Not at all kind tales originally. The text books for children came long after the bohemian, dark and trashy comic books for adults, which also were featured as continuation story comic strips in newspapers. After the text books came the Japanese anime series for very small children.
@@jammi__ This is not at all true though. The text books didn't come out "long after" the comic strips. In fact the first text book featuring the Moomin trolls was released earlier than the comics. Both the books, picture books and the comic strips were however being published concurrently for quite a while as well. There were two anime series made, but none of them were the first tv adaptations based on the books.

@@jammi__ I assume you were thinking of the very famous one from the 90's, yes? Before that there was also another anime adaptation made in 1969. Hayao Miyazaki was onboard that one as an animator. Although it's a lot more loosely based on the source material, and Tove didn't really like it. Actually, I just remembered there was a third anime that continued the 1969 one called Shin-Moomin, and was basically a more wholesome adaptation compared to the first one. There are also plenty of other tv-shows that were made before the 90s anime, like the Polish one where the characters are made out of felt (1978) and the Swedish ones where actors are in costume (1969 and 1973). In 1959 there was a puppet show made of them in Germany as well.
@@alipludepom There were also two adaptations in Soviet Union, a felt puppet one (also made in 1978, maybe it's the one you mean? It was made in Moscow) and a 2D one in 1980-1983. It made Moomins super popular in the USSR.

Uh, yes. An Abloy Classic core is a 7 disc core with reasonable-but-not-insane tolerances and false gates on all discs, which is why he had to go over the stack twice. Their newer Abloy Protec 2 core is the same basic layout but manufactured with so stupidly high tolerances that only a few people have demonstrated a valid pick.

A Finn here chiming in: It's not a novelty lock or a toy, it's just a real Abloy lock with Moomin branding. Moomin are a big thing in Finland and even adults buy stuff with the branding. They sell this lock without the branding as well and I've had one on my locker at work since forever.

I only discovered your channel maybe a year ago and am only an occasional viewer but I was still surprised to see that this lock required you to have it clamped down to properly work on it. That took you longer and required more effort to unlock than any of the other locks I've seen you open in the videos that I have seen.

Seems like Abloy locks tend to get good amount of reputation from LPL.
We had a similar plactic cased locks outdoors without any cover for years. Among the best locks to use. Bad side is the classic key, getting blanks for it got too easy and with little practise copying one wasn't impossible.
Would be interesting to see you battle against new Abloy editions. Or atleast get your oppinion from them. For classic has been there for decades allready and after that there has been several other versions from them.

LPL hasn't picked a single Abloy core besides the one hundred year old Classic core design. I bet it would be impossible for him to pick (but not defeat) let's say Abloy Sentry or Protec2.

Lpl understood it wrong. It's just a regular lock with plastic shell that has moomins in it. And moomins in finland is so huge that they have all kinds of merch that also adult people own seriously. But yeah abloy is pretty damn good company
I'm a proud Finn, again! I think there's an entry level Abloy padlock inside, and it's fitted inside a plastic cover. That's why it feels flimsy, but also makes it very cheap to manufacture, compared with the assumed standard lock inside.

In central Europe Abloy Classic locks were all the rage for medium-security applications several decades ago. The city of Vienna used them throughout their service provider's facilities (electrictiy supplier, public transport company, etc.), some in order to keep unauthorised people out of places like substations and main fuse boxes (ahead of the meter), others as mundane as staff lockers. The main fuse boxes were changed over to Evva K013 in the 90s or even 80s and when the rights on that key expired, changed for a massively complex system called ET-08 in 2008. Just to give you an idea how obscure these locks have become here.
This is honestly one of the best locks I've ever seen. Requiring preparation with a blank key, something to hold it steady while using a custom tool that needs both hands to use and over a minute of careful finessing to learn it's secrets? I remain convinced there is no such thing as an unpickable lock, but this one gets about as close as I think I've seen.

Moomin is popular everywhere, very much so throughout Scandinavia. One can find an abundance of merch, including locks but most notably of mugs :) There's a huge collector's market for moomin mugs from Arabia.
I'm sure I read on Yle's English news a few years ago that Moomin mugs are the Finnish druggie's shoplifting target of choice, being small, valuable, and easy to resell.
@@6yjjk The most expensive mug sold at a collectors auction was 27 000 (!) dollars. A relative collects and if financial probs would knock on the door, they can sell off a few mugs and it wouldn't be too shabby of a single time income.

I'm using a similar lock, very likely the same model, but without decals. Good to know it's not of the worst kind of locks! Besides with an unfortunately proven track record thieves will rather break the door instead of the lock. Despite multiple break ins I've had to replace the lock only once and that was because the lock (of a different brand) failed to open. I had to cut it with a saw.
