Hey, Nic! It's so nice to meet Manuela. Thanks to both of you! It would be great if she and her colleagues could do a similar seminar to the one that they do in different countries but online so we could all access it.

Maybe I should try and organise one. We're speaking at one of her local seminars next week.

I receive disability from the US Veterans Administration. Now that NHR is gone, I was worried that I'd be taxed like mad when I move to Portugal. I just learned this morning that it can't be taxed in Portugal because of the US-PT tax treaty (article 21, section 2). In short, it can only be taxed by the issuing state. Still, you can bet that I'm getting with a professional on this!

Excellent video! It's very educational indeed. I wonder, though, what the tax situation is for a retired, high-income, dual Portuguese-American citizen who currently resides in the U.S. and may wish to relocate to Portugal in the future.

@@mbcase Thanks!! My wife and I make more than that, and we already pay a lot of capital gain tax on our investments. I was afraid to learn that Europe is not a good place to land now. We're in our 70s and were considering spending our last decade(s) in Portugal .... Wishful thinking.

As Manuela mentioned there are perfectly legal ways around that, so I'd enquire further before dismissing it.

Thank you Nick and Manuela! This information is invaluable. One Question that wasn't mentioned. Is there a timeframe to start planning before making the move?🎉

That's a good question, I'd say get up to speed on the government policies and tax incentives in general and then six months to a year before you move over start detailed talks with a financial advisor.

Interesting and informative video thanks. Grewt question Nick about those moving just to get the tax break. On my visits it seemed to me that was common for those moving from different countries in the EU because they didn't have to pay in their country. I doubt there's much tax advantages for a US citizen because we still have to file US. Although depending on what state you live in Im assuming you'd get out of local state taxes.
I always wondered how you can be a financial advisor with out being an accountant because taxes are a huge part of any financial plan.
