    Thumbs up for the choice of guest for this round. You can tell EVDS went through a lot recently, but surely he will bounce back. Football management is far more complicated than playing football, since huge efforts do not always contribute to positive outcome.

    Can you imagine Woodward or Arnold at Utd giving this kind of interview? Met EvdS in Lisbon airport a couple of years ago with his Ajax staff - a smart, modest, down to earth, genuine guy that had time for fans. Under a new ownership, him as CEO and Ten Hag as manager would totally change the philosophy at the club.

      100% agree. I am not sure why he isn't mentioned in the same bracket as schmeichal... in my opinion he was better. And one of the first GKs who mastered played from the back, was super comfortable on the ball.

    • @Makainternational
      @Makainternational Год назад +2

      Recency bias prevails again. Schmeichal was the greatest goalkeeper in the world in his prime. VDS was close but the Great Dane won a European championship with Denmark 🇩🇰 and was pivotal in United’s 1999 treble winning season. He was an absolute beast!

      "he was not as good as everyone says he was" Roy Keane quote, verbatim on multiple occasions.

    • @parky243
      @parky243 Год назад +1

      Without doubt. No frills, did what was absolutely necessary with no fireworks and calmed the entire team in order to build United from a team who were great domestically but progressed further in Europe. Considering how great Edwin was, I really cannot understand the praise from De Gea.
      Edwin was a keeper of goal, like Buffon or Manuel Neuer, De Gea was a fabulous shot stopper. Edwin was brilliant, unassuming, calm, accomplished with both feet, did the small aspects of the position so well. Watch back the highlights from that time (I was luck enough to have an OT ST at the time), Vidic, Rio, Evans etc would never give him a backpass within the width of the posts, to minimise the risk of a bobble and concession of a needless goal. He would always tip the ball around the post for a corner than do anything spectacular. A cerebral keeper who paved the way for everything we now expect from keepers, and is criminally underrated.

    • @shahzadirani
      @shahzadirani Год назад +1

      Agreed, for me Van Der Sar just tips it over Schmeichel, because VdS was great at commanding the box, playing with the ball at his feet, collecting crosses, organizing his defense, and he never made those front page worthy saves because his positioning was world class!

    Without Marc Overmars by his side as a technical director, Van der Sar really made a mess of things. They managed to screw up not one signing, not two....no pretty much all signings. That cost them a fortune. Also, he can't keep the staff together....people don't like him that much to say the least. Overmars was the glue that kept everything together, Van der Sar screws things up. If United is thinking about bringing him in......don't! Bring in Overmars instead and get some club director who focuses on the commercial side of things but leaves the football to the technical staff. Edwin has no self reflection.....if anything good happens, he did it and anything bad that happens wasn't his fault. You don't want people like that unless you have other strong people next to him balancing that out.

    Lets be honest, he`s a bit boring and is never really outspoken. But that part of him, composed and calm helped him a lot to develop as a football director. It`s also hard to judge what he brought that club. Overmars had a big hand in developing the squad and if that squad has succes, everyone within that club is viewed upon as being successful. After Overmars was caught sending pictures of his d#ck to various women and had to leave signings and development came to a halt. Wrong coach, older players that had still the power of the dressingroom but were not playing like they did before because they had players like De Ligt and De Jong around them kind of says wrong decisions were taken. And in what way can you put a little of that blame on VDS? We can not say, because we are not in.

      Always get the impression he is a bit of a 'company man' which is probably quite good for big teams where there is so much intense scrutiny. Maybe less useful for smaller teams where you need innovative disrupters to make up for the lack in resources.
