I lived in Cathedral City for 5 years. Had a plunge pool and enjoyed outdoor living with the sun high enough in the winter to enjoy. Yes, it was miserable for 4 or 5 months but 24/7 air conditioning and solar made it livable. The people overall friendly enough, but because indoors often, due to heat, might take awhile to make friends. 😊
You forgot to mention that Palm Springs is to 40% a retirement community. So a lot of older folks driving like it is Sunday all the time. Spent a few months in fall there the other year and another thing that was thoroughly baffling was that all restaurants seem to close by 8pm - so better go for an early dinner if at all.
Well done Neal. I've lived in the Coachella Valley for the past eight years and love it. You hit all the major reasons not to live here. I'd only add, try a short-term rental in the summer if you're thinking of living in the area. You'll understand why the heat turns so many potential movers away. Personally, I like the summers for all the reasons you mentioned.
A customer of mine told me she had a vacation house in Palm Desert and she thought you could really live pretty cheaply in retirement there, but Palm desert has a lower sales tax. The San Andreas fault line follows the I-10 but moves a bit North following the hills south of the 10 and goes right through the middle of desert hot springs and then follows the mountains into San Bernardino. I discovered this after looking at real estate in the high part of desert hot springs after talking to a geologist.
PS has changed a lot post-covid and NOT for the better. I live there. Many good restaurants and historically popular stores closed down. Gelson's sold to people who don't have the same quality. Gangs have taken up residence and often engage in street take-overs and shoot-outs. Both the ice rink and the water parked are out of business. There is a shortage of doctors and veterinarians. We have So Cal Edison and during the summer, it is not unusual for electric bills to double and triple!! I could go on but if you are considering moving here, DO YOUR DUE DILLIGENCE!!!!
Lots of places have taken a nose dive…LA, SF…Portland. the desert has its problems but NOTHING like our big cities. This entire country needs help and it’s not changing anytime soon. Sadly. I’ll take diverse PS over the majority of this country. All day!😊
Neal moving from NYC to Palm Springs I don't drive and I get around easy buses are all over uber . So the car thing is not correct unless a person is too lazy to walk to a bus stop I even worked in Palm Desert 111 best bus route

If it wasn't for the snowbirds owning or living there half the year, then the very things you complain about would be year-round and not just seasonal. Isn't it great to have taxes paid by a whole, but where only half use the services for most of the year!

palm springs looks beautiful, all those pretty pool homes. But 110 degrees in summer, yikes. you must be prisoners to your ac homes. and your electric Bill's must be high from having to run major ac all the time.
We live here year round since 2017 and love it. You plan your day in the summer , starting with an early morning hike, than jumping in the pool. We have a garage, as many homes in Palm Springs area do, so it’s all relative.. but we are not in prison.. an hour away, you drive to Idylwild which has great restaurants and trail and 30 degrees cooler, so you have options, from visiting the San Jacinto mountain by tram and experiencing snow in winter, or Idylwild, , to visiting Joshua tree preserve and other near by nearby nature preserves.. it’s all about your preference. Palm Springs is not for everyone

Wow!!! Are you discouraging people from coming to Palm Springs? I discovered the Coachella Valley in1988. I fell in love with it. Coming from Oregon where it rains all the time Palm Springs was Paradise to me. I continued to come for vacations every Jan to May for years. The area was clean with flowers and lighted Palm trees lining streets. I didn't see junk cars lining streets or litter on the highways. When I retired in 2011, I moved to Palm Desert and lived there for four years. I lived near I-10 and yes there was wind on certain days and yes it rained hard maybe 3 times where there was flooding that I can recall. It was only in low lying areas and dissipated quickly. It was windy at times and more so near I-10 but nothing terrible. The sand would get under the garage door a little and in windowsills. Not a big problem. I did have a storage unit for a year off I-10 and I covered everything but did have grit on everything when I moved them back home. I found the rent about the same as the Portland area. You get so much more for your money in housing in PS than you do in Oregon. The prices of homes in the Portland area are out of control. A fixer upper in a more exclusive area is over a million. You get more and much nicer property in the desert for a million. I lived comfortably on social security and a pension. Yes, you need a car even if you are visiting and a garage is a must if staying long term. I found living there exciting and I met wonderful people during the Snowbirds visiting. I went to Happy Hours at various venues in the evening. Prices were very reasonable. And nothing better than a summer evening during July, August and September. Actually, my favorite time of the year as I could go to the pool early and get some sun, do my errands then have a wonderful evening outside. I was in my mid 60's at the time and those 4 years living there found me the healthiest I had ever been. The energy and sunshine (genuine Vitamin D) took 20 years off my looks. I never looked or felt better. I had to return back to the NW to take care of my mother otherwise I would still be living there. I love the Coachella Valley. Rent has risen substantially since I moved but no more than Oregon or Washington. I think it's because everyone is leaving the cities in CA area and demand is higher. I still hope to move back someday as a part time resident to avoid the CA taxes. I do feel your video of the areas you showed did not do the area justice. Maybe you were just concerned about Palm Springs. I prefer Indian Wells, Palm Desert and La Quinta which are more desirable and beautiful in my opinion.

I live out here 14 years. Now that I am over 70 since I moved here, the heat is exhausting for my health. I am a singer that have to carry sound equipment to set up for a show, so it's hard. The winds have become so strong that my allergies are the worst now, especially for someone who sings.
I love do the same if I have $$$$. Without any one reason. Place is Paradise for reason. Been there once. Definitely my place if I can afford retirement there. Beautiful warm sunny weather paradise.
I sadly live here but want to move out, weather is extremely hot, there's no opportunity unless you retired or are a billioner, cost of living, rise of homeless. Burbank or Glendale are better with both citys having more jobs than just retai.....hotel...hospital.
I grew up in both, Graduated Burbank HS in '99. It was nice and affordable back then, but like many other places, gone downhill...really bad post 2015. Main reason IMO is traffic, cost of living and real estate prices. Look up the cheapest apt rent or home purchase in Burbank or Glendale, CA. Like most places. Its the loss of middle class. Everyone is rich or poor. I am planning on moving out of state. You will need $10k+/mo gross income to survive single, net take home to survive as a family, ideally both spouses working...and that just for lower- middle class living here.

You didn’t mentioned most of the land you buy a home on in Palm Springs is leased from the local Indian Tribe. They can renew or not your lease when is expires. Also, can raise the lease “payments” on your home. Once I realized that, I was no,longer interested in buying a home in Palm Springs.

Most of the hot season is dry and lots of people own swamp coolers and they work well if you know how to use them. Plus the state doesn't do that your making things up
One of the reasons we left California was the 20% tax I would have had to pay on my 401k upon retiring. In Georgia I think I paid something like 8 or 5%. In case you're interested the privilege of living in California with the feces filled streets, non-existent law enforcement in some places and really bad pollution is not worth it.

Thanks from Canada for your comments on snowbirds. Be happy that Canadians still go to the US. I do not! The murder rate is way too high. There are too many guns. I don’t want to visit a place where the inhabitants feel so scared they need guns. Most of the handguns seized during a crime up here are from the US. So thank your lucky stars that tourists are still coming. The last time I was in PS gunfire broke out a few blocks from where I sat. That drew a line along the Canada/US border. I lived in PS for a couple of years after retirement and loved in. Unfortunately, I had to relocate to another state for family reasons. At some point, I would like to come back but I don’t think as a full time home owner. Given rising costs of insurance, taxes, utilities and maintenance from the extreme weather, seasonal renting might be better. And with ongoing pressures facing the Colorado River, the Coachella Valley might have a hard time recharging its acquirer if that river gets too low…..it’s basically on life support now. No water, no nothing. 😢
I visited and I liked it, coming from NYC, we New Yorkers can live anywhere we want. I am choosing Palm Springs as a second home location, and planning on being there a few months out of the year. As long as you are in a gated community, I think it should be safe, we liked Rancho Mirage, gorgeous city. This was a professional video, one of the best out there. thank you for that.

One of the reasons we left California was the 20% tax I would have had to pay on my 401k upon retiring. In Georgia I think I paid something like 8 or 5%. In case you're interested the privilege of living in California with the feces filled streets, non-existent law enforcement in some places and really bad pollution is not worth it.

I don’t want to visit a place where the inhabitants feel so scared they need guns. Most of the handguns seized during a crime up here are from the US. So thank your lucky stars that tourists are still coming. The last time I was in PS gunfire broke out a few blocks from where I sat. That drew a line along the Canada/US border. I lived in PS for a couple of years after retirement and loved in. Unfortunately, I had to relocate to another state for family reasons. At some point, I would like to come back but I don’t think as a full time home owner. Given rising costs of insurance, taxes, utilities and maintenance from the extreme weather, seasonal renting might be better. And with ongoing pressures facing the Colorado River, the Coachella Valley might have a hard time recharging its acquirer if that river gets too low…..it’s basically on life support now. No water, no nothing. 😢

I visited and I liked it, coming from NYC, we New Yorkers can live anywhere we want. I am choosing Palm Springs as a second home location, and planning on being there a few months out of the year. As long as you are in a gated community, I think it should be safe, we liked Rancho Mirage, gorgeous city. This was a professional video, one of the best out there. thank you for that.
