  • Beautiful drive through the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. The drive begins west of Ten Sleep and goes east on US Hwy 16 to Buffalo, Wyoming.
Located in north-central Wyoming, the Bighorn Mountains are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains. The Bighorns are a popular destination for hiking, backpacking, fly fishing, hunting, horse back riding and increasingly ATV riding and snowmobiling. Fishing opportunities abound in the Bighorns, with a high prevalence of brook trout. Camping is available at many established campgrounds with facilities, or across most of the national forest.

This was the best drive. We live in Rock Springs and we were in Sheridan for the weekend. A late spring storm came through and blocked us from getting home through Casper but this route was wide open and dry so we went for it. With the exception of South Pass, it was a perfect drive. Easily the best forced detour I’ve ever taken in my life.

I have made this drive more than a dozen times since 1994. That part of Wyoming is where I feel at home for some reason. Home is here in KY but Wyoming calls to me.

i remember my drive on Bighorn on the 4th of July weekend 2019, it was such a beautifuld drive and a scary one too at the top, just as i crossed the intersection, the clouds opened up and it was a mix of snow and rain at the top - was some of the most scary yet breathtaking scenes i ever saw , and to drive over the mountains across the clouds, it was a surreal experience. One of the perks of living in wyoming - you get to experience it more than once 🙂

Reminds me a bit of when I used to live in western CO. Wyoming is a bit more green though. Also reminds me of how much I miss being able to see the sky, especially at night. I get 5 months of low hanging clouds where I am now. Bleh...
Maybe someday I'll get to live in the mountains again.

Drove that road the other way a little over a year ago. Went up to Greybull Shell area to look at a ranch. Beautiful area. Not called Heavens Gate by accident

Anyone know if this route is safe to drive towing a travel trailer in early June?

It is absolutely safe. Better with a truck than a car though just because it's mountainous.

Yes you can definitely do so in the summer not winter
