    -----------------------------------
    www.buymeacoff...
In this video I create a course in Garmin Connect using the Autorouting function. I then blindly followed the course it created to test just how well it works. The course that Connect created led me on a merry little adventure, it was supposed to be 67km but I ended-up doing 80km through the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.

    About the 5MV channel
    --------------------------------------
My name is Terry and I love cycling. I have named my channel “Five Minute Velo” (5MV). I have called it 5MV because the videos I upload will (mostly) last no longer than five minutes. Each video will cover just one subject that is described in the title. Although the channel is mainly about cycling on the road, I will also cover some light (gravel) off road riding and cycle touring from time to time. No matter what, much of the advice will be pertinent to many branches of the sport/pastime.
I am new to posting videos on RUclips (May 2020) and I have much to learn, particularly in terms of presentation style and production quality. As such I welcome constructive comments that will help me improve the videos that I produce and upload.
There may be some dry humor in some of the videos, so dry it may not always be obvious :-).

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, avoid autorouting in Connect 😮.

I think you made the coffee link up🤣

The link is definitely just under the title in the description. But it is definitely optional. Again thank for taking the time to write a comment.
Despite the terrible autorouting the FoD was worth the effort 👍.

Welcome to the Forest of Dean! Looks like you explored all we have to offer, whether you meant to or not! 😅

@@ForestCyclingAdventures > thanks for taking the time to comment, I must admit, I only showed a small proportion of the 'adventure'. It took me back, having grown up in the FOD (Newnham on Severn). I'll check out your videos for more reminiscence 😀.

Have you compared this with other other auto-routing services. like Strava, Komoot or Google Maps? I usually do the same method you do: take some auto-route suggestion, then tweaking it using other inputs including Google Street/Sattelite viewing the routes.

Thanks for the feedback, it is great to know what other people do.
A few years ago I looked at different mapping options: ruclips.net/video/7NzuIZGuyC4/видео.htmlsi=DbOW1jNYgNn0uEsW
      but not routing.
I must admit this was just a spontaneous test, not an in-depth comparison.
I have more recently started using Komoot to plan a trip through Spain. I did an initial auto route but this did lead me down some walking tracks (GR99). I then used the Komoot facilities to reroute along, more sensible roads.
Prior to committing to Komoot, I did test out other services and I found Komoot to be the most useful.
I hope this helps. If you have experience of the different routing services, it would be great to hear about them.

@@FiveMinuteVelo Thanks for your insights. I use Komoot fairly often, and it does a fair job. Sometimes it magically knows when a road is out of commission and will refuse any attempt to route over certain roads -- probably crowdsourced info. The metric I use is how closely the route resembles suggestions by local cyclists (always the best resource). Bumbling around the map is the modern digital equivalent of the days of yore where you would pore over a foldout map looking for interesting ways of getting somewhere. I wish I could get around the limitations of GPX route files for head units: there's little or no support for describing waypoints (washrooms, etc.) which comes in handy. Maybe I need to use .fit or .tcx file formats, or do the old school stem strip-charts.
