this was me last year in Northern Tas. After the disaster we planted some seedlings tomatoes and enjoyed a bumper crop in Summer. Keep with it!

Thanks Amy, wishing you well. I am also in Victoria (Wimmera), I think zone 8. Moved here 10 years ago from Tasmania NW and struggling to get my garden going. I used to start seeding in September, but we still have night temps below 10C, although day temps started to go up in the 20s. Like you I have not done any seeding myself but bought seedlings. Grown most of my own fruits and veggies all my life. This year I have just focussed on herbs, fruits and potatoes. Have 2 tomatoes going and 3 zucchinis that I am trying to grow vertically. Started forest garden in front yard 2 years ago and this goes well and about to spread all old seeds, some from 2012, to create chaos garden in front of this. Wishing you good health and great harvest.❤

Thank you so much! I always grow from seed and buying seedlings will be different for me, but I'm willing to keep going with it. Sounds like you're growing a wonderful garden and it's great to focus on just a few things. I hope everything grows well for you this year. Thank you for watching!

Frosts are a constant fear here in spring, and even early summer. I have just finished planting out my tomatoes and wondering how to protect them if a frost threatens since the bamboo stakes are so tall. I have a list of all frost sensitive plants that will need covering so I don't forget anything. Your garden will still be great with bought seedlings and they will grow with love to feed your family.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your encouraging words. I hope all your frost sensitive plants stay safe from any frost that may come. Thank you for watching!

Im so sorry to hear, we are near ballarat Victoria and i haven't planted out my summer stuff yet coz we get frost hear as well, as well as being in an open paddock with no tree cover. Our canna lillies had started to grow and i noticed they all got hit by that same frost, they'll come back but so glad i hadn't planted anything yet

Hi Amy, I understand your pain, I’m the same, I love my garden and it has certainly bought me to tears in the past when I’ve lost things. I’ve not got my tomatoes in till late for the last couple years, but found that I was still harvesting tomatoes in April May due to the changing seasons. So I would certainly try more seeds and get seedlings as well. I’m in Latrobe Valley not sure my zone. 🌻🌻🌻

Thank you! I will definitely be trying seedlings and seeds and see what happens. We get our first frosts in April and the season can be very short some years, so I might use frost cloth on the other side of summer to protect them and try and lengthen my harvest. Thanks again!

So sorry to hear that, and it was cold and frosty here as well down to zero that morning, although only the roses showed signs of die-back from the frost. The fruit on the apricot trees has gone red. Far out! Mind you, I've not planted out the summer annuals yet. The old timers used to say to plant tomatoes outside after Melbourne Cup Day, and autumn is the traditional harvest time in this part of central Vic anyway. When you get to enjoy tomatoes in January - let alone Christmas - that's a bonus! Hope you're feeling better about it all now with a bit of time. And with a bit of care you'll get seedlings started quickly anyway. Actually, plants grow exponentially, so you may not have lost as much time as you believe, especially as the energy from the sun now has some force. Doesn't gardening teach us all perseverance? Cheers. Chris

Hi Amy, I know your pain! After two months growing my seedlings up inside, I planted them out five days ago only to lose all my pumpkin, zucchini and winter squash seedlings in the Saturday night frost here as well. Fortunately I hadn't planted out the tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant and chillies yet. All the best your health and vege garden, Wayne

Thank you Wayne, it's lovely to know their are others that understand the pain it is to lose plants. I'm so sorry to hear you lost some plants too. It's so upsetting when you spend so much time raising the plants and then they go in a split second. Glad to hear you still have all your tomatoes, capsicum, and others. I hope they thrive!

Sorry to hear about your poor seedlings. Gardening is such an adventure, it truly does give more than we get, although some fresh produce certainly sweetens the deal. I can’t wait to see what you do next, but I hope you enjoy your time away.

Sorry you lost your plants. It's such a loss and hours of work and weeks of growth all gone. Feeling for you. I'm not far from you and it's been real cold for this time of year. Fortunately only light frosts in my area.
Stay positive and it's OK to buy seedlings when set backs happen.

I'm so sorry 😞 It's heartbreaking when you raise them from seed and lose them. Such a big investment...time and emotions. I hope you can still enjoy sowing some seeds when you return, even if it's just for the joy. Perhaps lots of cherry tomatoes 🍅 ❤

I'm so sorry Amy. Growing from seed, for me , is super challenging . I love the growing and the varieties of raising seed. I have had to do seedlings almost every year, just a few , to get a harvest. Last year it was a few zucchini and kale ,as everything was getting so attacked and I couldn't even plant my garden until Summer because of no water . This year it might be cucumber yet. I'm just constantly replanting seeds and they're getting eaten or seedlings pop up only to be chomped down . I have zero corn again this year. I think I'll admit defeat with corn for now. I hope you can find some quicker Growing varieties you like from seed or find peace in growing bought seedlings with love . I hope you feel 100% soon. Thank you for sharing the real stuff . ❤❤

Thank you so much, I think it's important to share the hard moments as well as the joyful ones. I'm sorry your cucumbers are getting eaten. Some of mine were too before the frost. I put some plastic containers over them but the critters still found their way. Have you tried putting some gypsum or dolomite around the plants? Or some crushed egg shells? Most insects don't like calcium, so if the soil has the right amount the plant will too and the insects won't eat them. I've got some egg shells I'm going to try. Thank you so much for your kind words. x

I hope you are feeling better soon! In Trentham my spuds and grapes were devastated last week by that frost, and most sadly the leaves on my Nectarine trees have been badly damaged :(

I feel your pain. I'm in Talbot and we usually get nights colder than forecast, two nights ago was down to 1 degree and I had not covered my seedlings overnight ( they are still in containers) Lucky they survived. I usually sow my seeds quite late and plant them out early to mid December. So far my Zucchini have not sprouted, except for one. Now I'm trying another lot inside to get them going faster. I am the worst at growing tomatoes though, but still trying.

I’m so sorry so devastating when you have grown from seed but buying seedlings is ok. I cooked my capsicums a few weeks ago did not open my small greenhouse til late morning and burnt them all was so sad as I have been growing them since July. I have now gone and brought some from the nursery

Could you buy some seedlings to get you through until your next batch of seeds grow enough? You might end up getting a great late summer crop of what you plant.

    • @ThreeBarrowFarm
      @ThreeBarrowFarm  6 дней назад +1

Thanks, yes I'll do a bit of both. There are some vegetables that I need to only buy as seedlings because of their long growing life, but others I can definitely grow from seed still.
