Why some in NYC say overnight deliveries just won't work

- Cutting back on truck deliveries during the day is one way New York City's Department of Transportation says the city's often paralyzing traffic could be reduced, but some business owners say overnight deliveries are not for everyone. CBS New York political reporter Marcia Kramer has more.
The city that never sleeps but everything in the city is closed at 9pm.🤣🤣🤣
I was just in Brooklyn to pick something up at Microcenter. I didn't eat dinner and was looking for something to eat at 8pm on my way out of Microcenter. Everything was closed.

As vendor who drives to the city, getting people who double park ticketed fast will help, also getting all those annoying city workers with passes to "park everywhere" and take the spots for commercial vehicles will work wonders.
Annoying city workers? You mean the ones who help the city run and without them the city would crumble?
@@juliusbrewster No, I literally mean annoying, abusive and entitled city workers. Not all of them are like that, but there are a lot of cops, firefighter, mta etc that put a pass on their dashboard and park in front of a hydrant, in front of a school, in front of a commercial space to load and unload products, yet they do not get any tickets. This people should be fined and reprimanded for abuse of power. FYI, I am also a city worker and have my own business and I have never done this, but I know plenty who do.
The city made two no-parking "loading zones" in my delivery area so that I don't have to double park my truck, but I rarely get to use them because people with special plaques and plates just use it as regular parking. It's a joke.

Why do they assume we live forever. That is 16 years from now.
When Pathmark grocery stores were still around in the city, we always did our deliveries in the form of drop and switch trailers between midnight and dawn. Frozen and perishables were also delivered within this time frame as partial palletized loads, in and out easy peazy.
PATHMARK WAS A NICE STORE UNTIL ONLINE SHOPPING CAME ALONG AND FKD EVERYTHIGN UP
Who the F is going to be around for a nighttime delivery? Also not safe whatsoever with crime.
It’s actually fine. I have walked all over NYC without any issues. I also have worked in the middle of the night in NYC and there is no shortage of people doing the same. This is about Manhattan not the rest of the city.

It's going to be difficult finding people that want to work graveyard shift(all those business).the consequences make It a bad idea.
Yep they call it the graveyard shift because someone might walk up to you and shoot you for no reason
Right, everybody loves the idea of convenience but they won't work it themselves. We just got away from 24/7 Walmarts, no reason non emergency services should be open overnight.

they need to be more worried about the growing crime rate instead of this
It's called "multitasking." It's what one expects of any assistant.
Why would the Department of Transportation focus on crime? That's a NYPD issue.
You can't walk and chew gum at the same time?

True..... For ppl that says they cant hire an extra guy at night to take delivery then just let the delivery guy make an unattended drop at night. Is just sickening to see a large truck making deliveries double park in the busiest hours in the busiest street. Yes your store has needs but that is your problem dont inconvenience others becoz your store has needs.
@@hktrucker Who are they inconveniencing? The busiest hours meaning rush hour for people commuting? So how about we make the people commuting to work commute only during overnight hours? @@JJ-sk9nsfirstly, double parked itself is illegal. "who are they inconveniencing? " you are talking about hundreds of cars having to get around 1 truck. I believe you drive to work right?! This is the typical me first self centered mind set. A major problem in our society today.
We have stupid people in charge
I wouldn't let that "Commissioner" take care of my dog.
I wonder if he came legally to this country??
So where's the extra cash to pay drivers a night differential going to come from?
Who at the "business" is going to stay overnight to wait for a delivery while the business is otherwise closed? Pay someone to do nothing?
What about noise complaints from people hearing *"BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!"* from trucks backing in somewhere at 2-3am, or from just regular loading/unloading noise as things get slammed around?
Oh yeah, that plan is going to work soooooooooo well...
Did you watch the video? The coffee shop delivery company clearly show it works.
Extra cash comes from drivers not being stuck in transit, spending less time with parking, less people in the streets to bump in to, etc
Cleaning and prepping already happens before/after hours today.
If you lived in manhattan you would already know that the city is noisy as hell, even at night.

Take more lanes away for bikes, that’ll help
Paralyzing traffic ?
How about getting rid of bike lanes permanently!
Bloomberg and NYC DOT caused this disaster by pushing bike lanes.
Been saying this for years but it makes too much sense so it won't happen.
Yes they can. Get people who are nocturnal plenty of people stay up all night.
Did they say the city is willing to pay companies to deliver at night. Now the tax payer is paying private business. Geez!
We need more people working night shifts, accepting deliveries.
Unblock all the streets that are choked with dining sheds, pedestrian plazas, bike lanes, etc. Our leaders have caused the problems they say they're trying to solve.
That Frankenstein looking transportation commissioner who can't speak English needs to be replaced. All of this nonsense with bike lanes, dining sheds and citibike stands everywhere is his doing.
do you know that no bike Lanes will cost more traffic
OK, Robert Moses.
As always, people who aren't affected by these massive changes, demanding that others make the sacrifice. We say this same thing during covid with the people who got to keep their jobs telling the rest of us to stay home. If you want to help congestion, then YOU stop driving downtown. Let’s see how that cargo bike will work out. insane!
So now me as the delivery person I’m forced to change the time I spend with my family to go to work at night just to keep my job 🤦🏻♂️, they better be ready to pay a premium price for my service
Meanwhile it probably takes you an hour to go a few avenues during the day just to make deliveries when you can do it in a fraction of time at night.

🤔 There’s a saying at work to all complainers: “if you want your paycheck, benefits, and your pension this is what you have to do to get them…otherwise stay home…now get hot!” 😏
This all or nothing mentality is so often the true problem we face. We don't need ALL deliveries to be 100% overnight from one day to the next. I don't have access to the data, but I would bet that Pareto's principle holds here as well, i.e, that 20% of the stores cause 80% of the traffic related to deliveries.
Just incentivize big stores, which can already use night/early morning shifts for cleaning and prepping, like trader joes, whole foods, target, etc, to make overnight deliveries. Also, make amazon, fedex, dhs, etc also deliver at night - so often they paralyze an entire lane because they keep stopping at every other building.
When that's done, then we can think of the next steps.
I agree with your point about it not needing to be 100% right away but it still doesn't realistically work. Big box stores like you said are the only ones that can pull it off. From what I can tell they already do overnight deliveries as they don't usually have workers doing major inventory stocking during store hours. Amazon, fedex, ups etc can't do overnight deliveries to most people unless you want a bunch of packages left unattended in front buildings.
Everything is possible if u pay enough
Then get ready to pay yourself! $10 for a 20oz soda!
At what point does it become too expensive to get the simplest thing done!
Union guys can work at night.
They are union, they get paid good enough to shift shifts
They should give those incentives instead to support NY companies doing remote work with employees living in NYC. That will reduce cars on the road at peak hours.
Oh we can’t do that, they would have to get rid of a lot of useless middle managers that overseer the workers.
@@phantomcruizer 🤣
Why can't bodegas take deliveries at night?
Too expensive when nobody is working. Like the person said, they would need all their vendors to deliver at the same time to make sense. A couple of vendors delivering at night and all the others not willing to doesn’t work.
The same reason as why can't you just commute to work at night? The traffic will be better.
you have to be a special kind of stoopid. why dont you go to work at 2am?
the "paralyzing traffic" is from all the misdirection the DOT (pedestrian plazas etc) been doing since the DeBlasio era. Then the same sheeple who drive the excessive demand for uber, food delivery services, dining sheds choking the streets are the same folks who want congestion pricing. It's Moronic
Yeah, what an insane idea to have people use city spaces to live. Cities should be built for cars to flow, not for people to live!
@@bcs1793 There was and IS always space for BOTH......

Mayor Deblassio just went along with it.
Delivery truck needs armed escorts. All the crazies and homeless would attack these trucks for their cargo.
I agree. I hate delivery trucks they park it the dumbest places to unload. The guy who delivers for my local liquor store parks across the street because the trunk wont fin the the lot. Walks all the boxes across the street. Doesnt even use the cross walk. It sucks if you work early in the morning
Whats funny is that a majority of the studies of off hour deliveries show that it will help with traffic, pollution, deliveries, parking, costs etc
the reason why some want to keep it at day time is to charge more money, as being stuck in traffic means more billable hours
@@TravelTechie415 This is ridiculous. People don't want it at night because it's absurdly impractical. These businesses aren't open at night.
Studies show that you will lose weight if you only eat once a week. The obvious rejoiner is that it's not practical. The people it doesn't help is the people who now have to do overnight deliveries. These businesses aren't open at night.
@@TravelTechie415 that's why I think NYC was so hell bent to charge congestion pricing, as opposed to the delivery shift, which might lower revenues or level them and NOT increase revenue.

The noise complaint is gonna go up at night.
How about we ACTUALLY enforce parking rules? Im tired of seeing any car that feel entitled parked in commercial parking or truck loading zones and not get ticketed. As a result, commercial trucks have to double park.
When you hear that Beep Beep at night, that's the sound of your latte showing up from some other country or the eggs from the south maybe fuel for taxis and personal vehicles. Places like new York treat truck drivers like crap with poorly managed/ no loading areas, fines, booting and barnacles. That driver wouldn't be there with out the demand that's how that works.
I live in the middle of a pasture in rural country and I see a dozen delivery trucks a day out here, what do you expect in a place the size of New York?
NYC is a good test for autonomus delivery.
Overnight deliveries is an idea that comes from people who have no idea how the city works and lives in a bubble. Exactly who is going to pay workers to sit around overnight to wait for a delivery if you're receiving it? 99% of business operate during normal business hours, do you expect all of these businesses to stay open 24/7 because they have to wait for deliveries to come in overnight? It is only logical that business is conducted during business hours, and shipping and receiving is a large part of business activity. Imagine people wanted to limit the use of internet bandwidth during daytime so people could browse the internet without delay so it was proposed that all businesses should only be allowed to send and receive work emails during overnight hours. This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard.
Did you watch the video? The company that supplies coffee shops clearly shows it works. Stores already have people doing prepping/cleaning hours before they open.
@@bcs1793some stores do, not all. Graveyard shifts suck.
Cause coffee shope.usually open up.at 6
@@bcs1793 Did you watch the video? The company that supplies the lighting clearly shows it doesn't work. If you ever work with logistics, companies have receiving hours and they are quite limited. You are proving my statement about people being ignorant and living in a bubble right... That guy you are referring to is the CEO of a coffee supply delivery company promoting his business. Most coffee shops are not ordering through his company, he is saying it works for him and his few customers... that does not translate to the entire NYC economy.
@@bcs1793 Coffee shops have to open at 6am which means they usually have employees on site doing prep work at 3-4am anyways. The vast majority of other business don't open that early and don't normally have employees ready to accept deliveries at 3-4am
I'm sorry but if the city (and indirectly voters) don't give me commercial parking space for my truck, then they don't get to be mad that I'm blocking them double parked. People have a very selfish point of view here. They want both the street parking for their personal car and all the groceries and packages delivered to homes and stores. In the most congested place in America, they wanna have their cake and eat it too.
Delivery-Driver-Tunnels, modern infrastructure for a huge capacity city, add-on a superior storm-drain; bring freight up through sidewalk on elevators.
Overnight delivery is not great. I have worked with places that used it. Modt the time we gave the delivery person a code and tgey accessed the building with no one else there. Which is obviously risky from both the driver or any random criminals who take advantage of the door being propped open.
Even the quality of the delivery was worse as you got more missed or damaged products as there was no one to refuse on delivery, often leading to lengthy fights to get refunds or replacements.
IT can be done, Order 3 days in advance and you will never run out. If you can work during the day you can work during the Night, NYC operates 24 hours, I used to work in wall street and Kitchens would get deliveries as early as 12 am. Most deliveries in those kitchens came in from 12am-6am. Double order when you need to so there are no delays. Trust me it can be done.
If Union guys don't want to work during the day time, they won't have a job and newcomers will.
They just don't want to work OVERNIGHT Ive see a lot of deliveries especially food delivery for supermarket around away in MANHATTAN being delivered OVERNIGHT
They double, triple, park and do it both sides, the Amazon and fedex are the worst, they take over each block and set a distribution hub in the middle of the street.
The NYC DOT created this traffic mess because they took away 2 Lanes from the Avenues for the dumb Bike Lanes and moving the curb parking to the middle of the street
It’s to dangerous at night, no cops around. Don’t past that bill. Only deliveries truck at the peak hr. Have no parking, during those hrs. Emergency vehicles only., it can work .
more and more....nyc just doesn't work
Way too many cabs in the city
If they have space in the city to have like a big dispensary they could deliver the stuff there and have their customers pick it up, and I think the only space is on the west side but I think that's all a lot it out for luxury buildings.
Great idea!
The leaders of NYC are working hard to ensure NYC becomes the California of the East....
Continue making foolish policies, busineses will just close, resulting in no traffic.
👏👏👏👏
this is so catastrophically misguided. the city doesnt cool off well as it is. without the nighttime reduction in traffic, nyc will feel more like jamaica and harken back to 90s LA pollution. we could greatly reduce road traffic if we restored some of the east-west freight rail that already exists. some of the worst traffic runs parallel to the sunken brooklyn-queens rail. its almost like amazon picked their locations along the brooklyn waterfront hoping they would.. some depot-depot carrier trucks operate at night; restoring the E/W freight lines would let union workers load and unload them during the day, with a fraction the number of workers operating vehicles (way lower liability and distributed costs).
Swear it sounds like the reporter is trying to make her voice deeper
Highly supoort, designate certain roads to trucks only.
Make it the legal requirement and slowly shift delivery hours by half an hour every year for the next 14 years. 7am - 2pm becomes 12am-7am overnight deliveries as a gradual change.
How about no.cars...why do they have to bend to your will
@@ralphpal Are you asking why the 8 to 12 percent of delivery trucks on the NYC roads should service the 88 to 92 percent of general transportation vehicles? How about common sense?
Trucks clog up streets by being overly large. Then they completely block streets by double parking for deliveries. While deliveries are vital for the city, there's no real reason they can't be done at night other then convenience factor. If it was done at night when the streets are far emptier, the traffic is so much lighter. The trucks can move around faster, and double parking won't really matter.
This is opposed to daytime driving where most people have no choice but to drive since they need to go about their daily lives.
@@nybiggs Trucks are large but they are efficient in the sense that they are loaded up with cargo. Most cars driving around is a single person driving a vehicle alone. This takes up much more space and completely inefficient if you took the unused space on a truck vs all the single occupant cars. Why put restrictions on deliveries instead of passenger cars? Lets make passenger cars limited to after hours use only instead. You see the point I'm making?
@@JJ-sk9ns I understand what you're saying but it's not taking into consideration the impact. Night time deliveries would be a major inconvience for business owners and delivery companies/drivers. That's a very small percent of the population.
You also ignore the fact that trucks clog streets. Have you ever been stuck waiting for a delivery driver blocking the street for 10+ minutes? That back up just builds and starts affecting other streets exponentially. It's certainly happened to me mulitple times.
We're trying to improve conditions for the greater good, or the majority of New Yorkers. You take 8-12% of vehicles off the road, and greatly reduce backups, congestion improves significantly. for most drivers.

How are you gonna load a 4000 pound pallet of onions and potatoes onto a EV or cargo bike....
200 to 400 pounds at a time for the bike. An EV can easily handle 2 tons. These things can all be worked out. People are deliberately being difficult about it. They don't want to change.
I agree! EVs aren't the answer. Simply put can't load that kinda weight into an EV

😂 Clearly you've never actually used a railroad in NYC before! There are literally only two tracks going into and out of the city into NJ, which are shared between NJ transit and Amtrak. There are constant delays, especially during commuting hours. The subway trains are also often jam packed and delayed.
And if you're talking about cargo trains into NY, the goods still have to be collected from the train and delivered all across the city - it's not like there's a rail yard on every block.
