"When God created the celestial hosts--seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominions, principalities, powers, archangels and angels--He established that the angels must be in an uninterrupted relationship with mankind. Among those angels, the guardian angels are the most kind and loving because they begin their mission in the world by taking care of children. They are sweet like children; they are gentle like children; and they are vulnerable and shy, just like children." Excerpt from foreword of Akathist to the Guardian Angel by George Calciu.

God's eternity is the only example of the latter. Angels and any created souls that live forever could be said to be infinite but not like God.

4:49 For the first 3 ranks these are known from the Old Testament although wheels are renamed as thrones. For the lower ones we also have records in the Bible for Principalities , Archangels and angels as names or ranks. For the rest probably some church tradition but is unknown. Also as an interesting thing some angels may have more than one rank so is possible that not all ranks are fixed. We do not know

The idea that you can name your guardian angel or know their name is actually generally rejected by Catholic thought and standard practice.
The idea of naming them or knowing their name seems to have been a trend in the 60s/70s and onward and is slowly being set aright when it is found, at least in my experience.

This might be a dumb question but does everyone have a guardian angel or are they assigned to us at baptism? In that context would it make sense to ask someone else's guardian angel to pray for them if the person is not Orthodox?

I know Catholics say that everyone has a Guardian Angel from the moment of conception, I know one writer has said that even the anti-Christ will have a Guardian Angel. God wants us all to be saved (surely that requires some angelic assistance) and Jesus talks on the little children (not Baptised) having their Angels in the presence of God. I think the Orthodox would argue that in Baptism, the relationship with a particular angel is formalised, in the same way you get assigned Godparents. It is NOT a contract, but it is a covenant. So saying we only have an angel from the moment of Baptism is true but it does no presuppose the lack of angelic protection of all people. Therefore I personally pray to the angels who protect people I know irrespective of whether they are Orthodox or not.

From what I understand (and take what I say with a grain of salt as I am a lowly catechumen and have no authority on this matter) when we are baptized we are a new creature. If all are born with a guardian angel, then my prediction is that if we lost our guardian angel due to our vile sins, then, perhaps by God's great mercy, we receive one or are restored one in baptism. That said, I am going to talk to my priest about this now as I am curious too.

I was raised Catholic. Your beliefs sound very much like Catholic beliefs. I have always been told that I have a guardian Angel. Angels have names. It is not important for us to know the guardian Angel at the level of knowing their name. They are not our friends. They do a job. There is nothing personal about what they do. Angels work for God the Father. They are not our employees or our friends. We cannot have a conversation with them. We can talk to them but it is not a two way conversation. They are there to make sure we can do what we are put here on this earth to do. Angels are a higher being than us. Superior in every way. I thank my guardian Angel for protecting me and keeping me alive and safe. This isn't necessary. It makes me feel better to thank them but Angels don't need our compliments. Angels have never sent me any messages or communicated with me that I know of. But, I know that the Angel is always there.

All's fine, it's just that Dionysius isn't a "Pseudo". Don't put too much faith in scholars. St John of Damascus, St Maximos the Confessor and St Gregory Palamas all regard the Corpus Areopagiricum as authentic. The hymnography also commemorates the historical Dionysius as identical with his "Pseudo" counterpart. And in his "Myriobiblion", St Photios lists a treatise by Theodore of Mopsuestia (4th century) in which he defends the authenticity of the Corpus. Apparently Theodore could time travel according to scholars lol
