I really admire the huge volume of research done by you David Godman on the life and times and the teachings of Bhagavan. Your narration of various incidents in Bhagavan's life opens my mind and brings me closer to Bhagavan everyday. Our generation should be extremely thankful to you for carrying forward the legacy of the Saint of Arunachala as the earlier generation is indebted to Paul Brunton for revealing to the world that in the remote recesses of a South India there is a 'Land of the Holy Beacon' where lives a saint in whose presence even the most agitated minds find quietude..
It is as if David actually lived with Ramana Maharshi in last century and just narrating his memories from those times in this century. David, your narrations and delivery of teachings are proving to be almost therapeutic for me. No doubt it is the research and tremendous work put in by David to know Maharshi like this, but it is mainly because of his supreme level of dedication and devotion to his Guru that has enabled him to have this insight in His Guru's life and essence of his teachings. If some day I can see you in person, even just from a distance, I would feel blessed to have darshan of a modern day sanyasi. To know that devotees and seekers of your calibre are living so near us, that we can actually share same atmosphere, is a very comforting feeling. Your tapas has given an inexplicable power to your spoken and written words. In today's world, rarely people live up to their name, you are an exception to the namesake. for you, their could not have been a better surname than 'Godman'. My pranaams to you and Ramana Maharshi.
The incarnation of Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi saved Hindus & reaffirmed their faith in Sanatana Dharma. 🙏Imagine a Jnani who could communicate to animals.
wow wow david you are grate. am from tiruvannamalai and that pachaiyamman kovil is our family god . but I DID NOT KNOW this stories what you said . o my goodness THANKS man . you r relay grate.
Dearest David Godman, It was nice to meet you in Arunachalam, one day near the steps of virupaksha cave and next day outside the ramanashram although you were busy. Your work on Ramana Maharshi is detailed. Thank you
It is revealing that when Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi was asked point blank if the Hindu doctrine of reincarnation was real, his answer was, "No definite answer is possible". Yet just as David said, Bhagavan was such that he refused to take a hard line one way or the other, because in the end, that is not what matters. What matters, is realizing the Self. God. Consciousness. Whatever mind seeks God/Self is destroyed upon reaching the goal anyway. So what does it matter what beliefs such a seeking mind holds to? Faith, allows for the initiation of the quest. Surrender/Self inquiry, allows for its completion. Without faith, one can never reach the point of surrender. Without faith in what Bhagavan is saying, one will never fixate upon the feeling of "I" to dissolve the false self. Indeed, once the seeker is dissolved, only the Self remains.
I am enjoying all the stories you tell regarding Ramana maharishi. What impresses me is that in today's world any Tom dick and harry pronounces himself to be baghavan ramanar just said he saw his true self which is pure consciousnessness. Amazing. You are lucky to live in thiruvannamalai in the grace of a great soul.
26:55 - this was mentioned in the letter No. 84 in the book *"Letters from Sri Ramanasramam"* by Sri Suri Nagammma Garu. 22:40 - this story can be seen in this movie on Adi Shankaracharya ( ruclips.net/video/IYAOs-9NCsM/видео.html watch from 1:31:09)
It is the first two lines of Ramana Puranam by Muruganar. A CD of the chant is available from the Ramana Maharshi Centre for Learning, Bangalore, and from the Ramanasranam Book Depot.
Not asking for new clothing and towels is one thing but hiding their sad state is something above and beyond not asking. There seems to be some resistance to even being cared for, like he would prefer to be not bothered over or even barely noticed.
