Summary:
Paul Kantner opens this show with an interesting observation: "Ah, the late show here. It used to be the young kids would always come to the late show to get home in time for curfew and the old folks would stay for the late show. Now all the old folks come to the early show and the young kids stay late..." The year was 1988, and for the San Francisco music scene, it seemed everything that goes around, comes around again.
The legendary Fillmore Auditorium was back in business, and playing on stage was the famed acoustic duo of Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady, better known as acoustic Hot Tuna. The duo, which formed in 1970 as a side project featuring two of the six members of the Jefferson Airplane, eventually added Airplane drummer Johnny Barbata and violinist Papa John Creach to become Electric Hot Tuna. But on this night, it was back to the original two-man, acoustic lineup for an evening of old time blues and country-blues standards.
This show, part of a multiple night stand at the Fillmore recorded by promoter Bill Graham for his archives, includes a few surprises. On hand for the show were electric Hot Tuna member Papa John Creach, who contributes his tasteful violin runs on a few songs, including the boogie romp, "John's Other." Also on hand is Jefferson Airplane/Starship founder Paul Kantner, who sits on a few Airplane and KBC Band songs, among them, the 1967 Airplane classic "Martha." And Grace Slick sits in too, contributing vocals on "Good Shepherd" and the set-closing "Volunteers". Surprises aside, this is a solid collection of classic Hot Tuna including Reverend Gary Davis' "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning," "Candy Man," Bukka White's 1930s prison lament, " Parchman Farm," and the band's own catchy instrumental, "Water Song." Another highlight is Kaukonen's solo acoustic number for the Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow album, "Embryonic Journey." Hot Tuna (both acoustic and electric) remain a touring act, and Paul Kantner is overseeing yet another incarnation of Jefferson Starship. Sadly, Papa John Creach died in 1994, at the age of 76.

++ honsynoppy58 aries... Have to agree about the old school fading away.... but not everywhere. We have "bottom of the dial" FM radio still diggin' on stuff like this from time to time... and then there's my home stereo (small club system) rocking the neighborhood with hardly a complaint within a half mile. OTOH, there's always one asshole in the next town calling the cops at 3 pm (not 3 am) on a Saturday saying that I am disturbing the peace. The cops are always shocked to see some old guy answering the door and usually go away quietly!
Classic rock commercial radio doesn't play stuff from the 60s with difficult subject matter.

Glad I saw ht in 88. Two shows back to back.
I wish I was there! I never saw them live, even though I snuck into a Jefferson Starship show once, it was sold out, went straight through the back door and made my way to backstage and said, Hello to Papa John Creach. Trouble was I told my friends I left outside to do exactly like me, but the got stopped, so I went back out cause I had the keys to the car and I felt bad. I wasn't thinking though, maybe there was a side door? I could have let them in? We didn't have the internet (thank God for RUclips, right?) back then and if you wasn't glued to the radio, you'd miss out on a concert or same as today things sell out quick. Unfortunately, today it costs at least a hundred bucks to get in and sit in the nose bleed seats up in the rafters.
Bless this band, and RIP: Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Spencer Dryden and Papa John Creach.

It's a constant argument, JA or CSN. I prefer the power of the JA version, with Grace's soaring vocal, Jorma's searing guitar and Jack's pounding bass. Both are good, and it's awesome that this song was recorded two different ways by two great bands.

I grew up listening to my older brother's records, and got the idea that music was important somehow. I wasn't wrong.
I give not a single shit what anyone says about voices,,divas,,etc. ,,,Gracie was THE voice. That girl could sing! Wish I could have seen them in the heyday,,but,,alas,,,I was but 10. I did years later get to see an electric show from Yorma and Yack. Was excellent!

One wail from Alice and her gnome-like face will keep me alive for another 6 or 7 weeks...You tell me what the right combo was...When Grace says "Who won?" you get the feeling there was a whole generation and war for the humanity of earth behind it. A cosmic battle in a parallel dimension that included rock and the Airplane. Who do you get that from now a days?

This performance was unplanned. Kantner, Kaukonen, and Casady were playing the show, and Casady decided to prank Kantner by having Slick come out onstage... That's why Kantner made the crack about "my ex-wife, the Devil incarnate". They had just gone through a bout of suing each other. That they were able to slip right back into this song is impressive, even if it is a low-key performance. This appearance directly led to the Airplane reunion the following year, for better or worse.
Yep. When Paul realized just how corporate Starship had become he decided to leave and when he left that began the lawsuits that resulted in Starship not being allowed to include "Jefferson" in their name.
@Seederman Not entirely unplanned. I got to the Fillmore early the day of the show to grab a prime spot down front. Kaukonen Casady Kantner had been advertised (Kantner had joined Hot Tuna for a tour - when the tour reached SF, they played the Fillmore), but otherwise, there was no official indication that this show would be anything different from the rest of the shows on that tour. But when I got to the Fillmore, there were rumors that Slick would be appearing. I was skeptical until Casady showed up mid-afternoon, and asked him if it was true that Grace would be singing. He confirmed it. Papa John Creach and early Hot Tuna harmonica player Will Scarlett also appeared at points during the show. Slick did 4 songs with the band that night. A great night!
And I think Kantner had an ulterior motive for joining Hot Tuna -- wanting to get the 'plane flying again. Indeed, he may have already have worked out a quid pro quo with Jorma -- something like, I'll go out on the road with you, if you go out on the road with me. That kind of thing.

here's my recollection...
At the time I got tickets for this show, I had a strong suspicion that Grace might show up. That was our hopes anyway. Went with my friends, Gayle and Wanda and the love of my life, Smyth.
We got in line late afternoon also to get up front at the stage. With all the chit chat in line, all were expressing our hope that Grace would sing. A woman in line behind us, (oddly I seem to recall she was from Santa Cruz), said she had seen Grace at her AA meeting the night before and Grace mentioned she was gonna be at the show. That added a bit of fuel to the rumors. Then my friend Gayle chastised her for mentioning something Grace shared in a meeting (guess that was a no no, -confidentiality and all that). Before they took the stage, Grace was in and out of view upstairs to the left of stage. Still no certainty she'd sing. Then she did!! And they sounded great! Also sang a beautiful Third Week in the Chelsea w/ Jorma. Our hopes and wishes were realised.
This vid aside from sounding great, offered a glimpse of the bald back of the head of Smyth below Jorma at the edge of the stage. He didn't make it past 10/90. But sure was still with us and able to rock out in autumn 1989 at the JA reunion. Saw all the Bay Area shows of that tour.

I read that Grace and Paul hadn't spoken until she surprised him with this appearance at the Fillmore so i guess 'Wooden Ships' helped them patch things up.

This musical signpost so beautifully created , offered warmongers across the globe an alternative direction of travel away from the futility and brutality of conflict , my tears watching this pay homage to the fallen as a result of the ignorance of those who continue to deny a peaceful existence on planet earth. Slick and Kantner- I would call this Jefferson Airplane not Hot Tuna! The best reason to listen to the Airplane ✈ were Jorma and Jack! This song was originally released on an Airplane album.
Yes, but Kantner, David Crosby and Stephen Stills wrote this song while on board a ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Its a shared writing credit. CS&N recorded it on their first album. It first appeared on JA's album: "Volunteers". The Airplane played "Wooden Ships" (as part of their set) at Woodstock (but "Volunteers" had yet to be released in August '69). As a band "Crosby, Stills and Nash" debuted at Woodstock.
It's really not Hot Tuna officially, but it's great to see the airplane flying.

So, were Grace & Paul just sitting in? They were never members of Hot Tuna, that was Jorma & Jack's project.
Paul was the guest of Jack & Jorma, Grace's appearance was a surprise especially for Paul since the two hadn't spoken for a while. i guess they patched things up with this performance.
Well that's the Jefferson Airplane there, ..always with that San Francisco thing in their music... to some It's the best sound there is.... gotta listen twice!

This was pretty much the beginning of the Airplane's reunion. A few months after this jam Marty would come back and they would record the album and tour.
Btw, it really would have been a trip if Marty had walked out as well and you would have had a reunion of what I've always called the greatest vocal frontline in the history of rock.
Not Hot Tuna, just Jefferson Airplane without Marty Balin. Hot Tuna was a vehicle Kaukonen and Casady used to separate themselves from JA.

Solely personal preference...a bigger fan of the CSN version...but the version Grace Slick does with Crosby and Nash is INCREDIBLE.
