Jay Styron has a new method to grow oysters- in cages that float on the surface of the water. We travel to Cedar Island on the NC coast to take a look.
Here in Prince Edward Island it takes us a full 3 years in cages on the surface to reach market size. Our oysters go dormant for winter so the shelf life is much much longer. But man it would be nice to be able to grow them that fast. I currently have over 5,000 bags and looking to expand.

Pacific Oysters grow at a similar rate but the Sydney Rock Oyster will take 3 years to reach maturity from wild caught spat, get that down to 2 years approx. if they are sourced from a hatchery with selective breeding.
Oysters like nitrogen and most of it is on the bed floor, off bottom culture is best also it's cooler making it an all year round op. This is based on research abstract investigating nitrogen levels in bays
joe jack I have also lived and worked on the water all my life, and have an understanding that as development increases, pollution increases, leading to more acreage of shellfish beds being closed. I manage 75 acres of shellfish beds, 15 of which was just closed this year because of pollution. Eventually, all shellfish will have to be grown in some type of closed system hatcheries, because all of the non-point source pollution caused by development runoff will render all the shellfish beds unfit for human consumption. And by the way, we don't get one red cent of grant money.

My question is this. Is it possible/ practical to buy let's say a 14 foot x 4' Above ground swimming pool, fill it with water, let water sit awhile adding the same things for starting a salt water Aquarium, and eventually add mature Oysters to reproduce ? This is for personal consumption. I love oysters but can't find a reliable, reasonably priced source in my area. I live in the N.E. near Philadelphia. How do oysters survive in cold water ? Its probably more important that they stay in cool / cold water. They probably wouldn't do so well in summer months. All I know is i LOVE OYSTERS or as Archie Bunker would pronounce them...... " ersters " and IF I was in my early 30's and it was practical to farm oysters out of a swimming pool, I would do it in a heartbeat !.What I like about the Idea is........no pollution for the oysters to take in. Hell, If I would do clams and black mussels at the same time that would be utopia for me.

Aquiculture oyster farming has devistated softshell clamming in rivers around my town. It has destroyed life long clam diggers livelihood and thier families.
joe jack How about you explain your stance rather than just saying it is a waste of tax payer money.... Do you have any idea the benefit oysters have on the ecosystem they are part of? They are filter feeders, they actively clean the water they live in. More oysters mean a cleaner ecosystem and with how these new breeding systems work to raise them quickly means cheaper sustainable food for people. Means more jobs and more people who can pay into taxes for more growth. I truly pity people with your levels of ignorance.

I'd double the line lengths the floating baskets clip onto so they could be on a pulley system in and out. What hatchery do you use?
btw not only are they making profit they are most likely cleaning the surrounding water
