That's because Nintendo gave them very small hitboxes, making it very easy to jump through the top without taking damage. Anyone can do this just as easily as seen in this TAS.
Running through the piranha plants is perfectly normal, but this is a tas. When this video was uploaded the strat for a humanely viable flagpole glitch hadn’t yet been discovered

***** HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! "420 noscoped" omfg lol i cant believe i just read that hahahahahaahahahaHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Also, to those of you claiming that he should have died when hitting the piranha plants, you should know that the hitbox in the piranha plants is actually only a small vertical rectangle in the bottom part of the plant, while Mario's hitbox encompasses almost his entire body. Basically this means he would have to jump directly on the plant and hit it dead on in order for the hitboxes to collide, thus causing him to die. On the other hand, there are several cases where this appears to occur in this video but he still doesn't die, for instance at 3:19 he appears to hit a plant directly and nothing happens. Personally I believe that the video is manipulated for this reason, but I know if I say this all people will do is criticize me.
I'm getting tired of everyone saying this was either cheating or a TAS. It's an NES game there are going to be glitches and the speed running community always use glitches. Even if this were a TAS speed run it is Tool *Assisted* it doesn't just do the work for you. You may say "but he touches the piranha plants" to which I say, they have a flawed hit box. So stop giving negative comments about a masterful speed run which took skill and practice.
Andrew's World Record, not this video, was recorded liv on Twitch with his commentary. And he has been confirmed legit through his many live perfomances.
That is not the case, Leander... As Alter said, this is a Tool Assisted Speedrun. It was recorded on an emulator frame by frame and with save states by Klmz. It's not done by any bots.
this is not marIO , this video is older than marIO. It's a TAS, the only thing than the bot do is reading the input wrote by the persons who made it. And the unenecessary jump are either swag points (speedrunners does this all the time) or it's actually the faster way of moving.
Wow the trick at the end of 8-2 with the bullet bill. Majestic! In most of these TAS you can usually find areas that could be improved with careful examination. But this one has been looked over so methodically by so many people it's hard to imagine what more could be done. Although I'm sure it'll be done.
@@joshmitchell8939 it let him skip the animation of mario walking into the castle and the flag going down the pole, saves a couple frame rules and there’s an even faster way to do it now

+nabbikill Tool assist basically captures the frames and you compile the correct frames together. You would still need to know all the hitboxes and stuff to get it down right.
That's just this game's small hitboxes. This is a Tool-Assisted Speedrun, which means it was recorded on an emulator with tools like Save States and Frame Advance to simulate a perfect human player. Though the game has not been altered and no cheat codes are in use. Everything is identical to console.
"Everything is identical to console." yet you said "This is a Tool-Assisted Speedrun" and "recorded on an emulator with tools like Save States and Frame Advance to simulate a perfect human player." NONE of that relates to a REAL PLAYER. No real person can do this, and what you are showing us is a fabricated run of someone running through the game. Don't lie to us, tell us you manipulated the **** out of the game to make it look nice.
BigRedWood The game and everything you see in this TAS would operate the same exact way on console if you could repeat the inputs, which is the whole purpose of a TAS. EVERYTHING is doable in theory, and most of it have been done by players in real time on console without these tools. I'm not lying, it's just you who don't seem to understand what a TAS is and its concept in general.
I thought I could play this so fast, and I can, but realy impressed with how he avoided the flowers coming out of the pipes so recklessly. I would at least take one mushroom to be big that's all, just in case
+Zacharie You're completely wrong. Video games are designed for human players, and “world record speedruns” are considered human achievements by pretty much everyone. Additionally, HappyLee holds the TAS record, so calling it the “TAS WR” would still be wrong.
+Drew Newton The game is programmed so that as long as Mario is in his falling animation, it won't matter where he touches enemies, he'll stomp on them anyway.
goomba008 TAS =/= Speed run. Speed runs are done by a person without hacking the game and TAS are done with special programs that let people find the most optimal routs by editing and moving at one frame at a time. There's a place for both but they can't be counted in the same category.
RizenLink Yes they can... Is it a run? yes Is it speedy? yes Here's the categories for you (this is well-established nomenclature, what you think they should be is irrelevant): - TAS speed runs - Single segment speed runs - Segmented speed runs All are speed runs. They require different skills and talents. They are all impressive. Consult the speed run wiki for more information. Good day sir
Like many people, I've finished this game legit dozens of times. Now, I've watched and rewatched that bit. My thoughts: 1) Alex Camino, what you said may be true, but Mario seems to be in his jumping animation, not falling. 2) If Mario is, indeed, jumping not falling, he should be dead as a proverbial doornail. Anytime you jump UP into enemies on this game, you die. 3) Like many NES games, Super Mario Bros. is a bit glitchy, so it could be a legit glitch. To the naked eye, it doesn't look legit at all. 4) The point of a TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) is to essentially demonstrate what is actually possible in a game within the rules of the game, but generally showcasing things that would prove exceedingly difficult for a human player to actually perform. Save state abuse and cut-and-paste editing can abuse this concept, so this could be a legit video or edited garbage and only the creator and certain other TAS-familiar individuals can tell it's rubbish. For my money, Mario hitting that Koopa in such a manner shouldn't be possible outside of a glitch. He should be one dead plumber!
Agent J007 Gaming The TAS input file of this run can be found at TASVideos, where anyone can download the run and verify it, making it impossible to cheat. So even though something may look suspicious, it all works the same exact way it does on console. As you are recording frame by frame and with save states, it's very easy to make a jump so that you hit the koopa from below the very first frame Mario starts falling, making it look like Mario's still jumping. So yeah, it's not a glitch, it's just how the game works which this TAS could easily take advantage over for fun =).
Duderson11 Yeah I know, I saw all the TAS comments down there. So you're saying a person, with zero tool-assist, actually finished SMB in only one second longer than this? Whoa.
Also, it was impossible to do an FPG, a 347 in 1-2, the Lightning 4-2 framerule without the 11-pixel bump or the Kriller37 top clip, the KosmicZ BBG, and an extra-perfect 8-4 when this video was made. Back then, the world record was a 4:58 by AndrewG. However, compared to this TAS's time, his record actually clocked in at a 5:01. Back then, people didn't even know that hitting the top of the flagpole saved time, or even the fast 4-2 and BBG that made a 4:57 (which in this comparison, a 5:00) possible. Timeline: 2011: This video was made. 2013: Fast 4-2 and BBG discovered, BBG ruled out due to luck, but fast 4-2 was hard 2014: First 4:57/5:00 with BBG without 4-2, due to the "Golden Frame" principle 2015: FPG era: 4:57.01 was the human limit back then, until FPG's became humanly possible 2016: First 4:56/4:59 with 1-1 and 4-1 FPG's, and fast 4-2 with BBG 2017: 4-2 Blazit clip discovered, as well as the 1-2 347, enabling humans to get a 4:55 2018: First 4:55/4:58 on par with AndrewG's Any% plan, first pl8-1 2019: First KosmicZ BBG, first Kriller37 top clip 2020: First low 4:55 with KosmicZ BBG 2021: First 4:54 with pl8-1 2022? You're a freak of nature !!! That's one heck of a run. I haven't played this game in a couple of decades (I believe the last time I played was 2002) and recently picked it up and man it is a LOT harder than some of the modern games we're used to.
It's a Tool-Assisted Speedrun (TAS), which means he used save states and slowdown to push the theoretical limit of how fast you can beat the game. Also there's actually been a faster TAS run by HappyLee in 2011 which stands to this day. There's also been speedrunners who have beat this in less than 5 minutes in real time, getting super close to TAS

@@tincetjan837 no, that is legitimate, I am a speed runner, and the hit box is only the stem of it, so u can jump above it, but from other parts of the run u can tell that it is still a TAS Speedrun, which means tool assisted speedrun

Yeah, the uploader who took the run from TASVideos did a terrible job with the title and description. That said: loads of people can indeed press a key for one single frame only, it's not that hard.
Wow at the amount of people saying fake or that cheats were used lol. So ignorant, learn what TAS is. Can't read the comments, makes my head hurt at that level of stupidity.
+Sayr It's in the description where the origin of it was. Also anyone with common sense can tell this is TAS. Big fucking deal if it's not in the title. How about don't be lazy and check the description or understand what TAS and use your brain. Gtfo.
Jerad Scharrer Yeah, but who checks that? It SHOULD be in the title period. And yes I'm aware it's TAS, but the guy should make a better effort of informing newbies about what it is in the description. Almost all TAS videos I've seen at least explain what it is in the description.
The hitboxes are identical for anyone playing the game on the NES version. Nothing about the game has been modified and no cheat codes are active for this Tool Assisted Speedrun.
LOL I like how he knocks the wings off a turtle by jumping into it from underneath at 3:24. Some of the plants didn't kill him when he went right through them as well. Clearly cheating.
+Mzee1084 No cheat codes in this Tool Asssited Speedrun, and the game has not been modified. If Mario is falling, he'll stomp on enemies no matter where he "lands" on them. The piranha plants have very small hitboxes, you can jump through the top without dying. Try some of the jumps in 4-1 for example, they are very easy.
Tompa A Yeah I figured after that he just used the tool to kill the guys he jumps under on the first frame or so of Mario falling so it appears like it isn't. Anyways, he should have made it clear in the video that it was Tool Assisted. Personally, I don't care for TAS. Not skill to me.
+Mzee1084 No, the tool doesn't do anything like that. Someone with good enough reflexes could have done this as a normal speedrun, without cheats. Hitboxes in this game are just wierd
That's just because the piranha plants have very small hitboxes. You can easily jump through them like that without dying, try it yourself in that level. Everything you see in this Tool Assisted Speedrun works identical to the way it does on console. No cheat codes, nothing modified.
I apologies for the quick and brash accusation and instead aplaud. I was wrong. the hit boxes on the piranah plants only extend two pixels into the head thereby making it possible to fly through the art. A quick google of smb hitboxes will give show many hitboxes quite smaller than the sprites themselves. Also found a lot of hits debunking many moments in the video where it seems cheating was happining.
By the way, the real time is 4:54.032. Although, AndrewG's 4:58 looks like it was just 1 second off this TAS, his record actually is a 5:01 compared to this TAS. Also, Niftski's 4:54 is not faster than this TAS, instead, he got a 4:58 instead of a 4:57 like this TAS.
to all those who call this bullshit go here twitch tv/andrewg1990 and watch the game run no legit runner uses cheats and a tas is for entertainment and to showcase how broke a game can be
nateboy1489 The piranha plants in the first Super Mario Bros. game are glitched. The hit box is tiny, so unless it touches Mario at the exact right point he will not die.
This can easily be spotted as a TAS. For one, FPG wasn't discovered until around 2015, the jumps at the beginning of 1-2 are frame perfect so that's not legit, 1-2 wall clip has only been done by 3 people in a run: goofychocobo, andrewg, and StuckInAPlate, all of which have done it in this past few years, 4-2 wall clip was first used by Kosmicd12 in the 2nd quickest run of Any% (4:56.462) done in Feb. 2018, also, 8-1 FPG loses time due to how constraint the framerules are in that level, FPG once again wasn't discovered until years after, BBG wasn't found until 2013, in 8-4 in the water area, Mario's chest isn't attatched to his body, and the last thing is that all these levels are played far better than ANY human can legitamantely play those levels, 244 is NOT an achievable time for 8-3, the fastest is 243. That's all.
It is indeed a TAS, and the original maker of it, Klmz, never tried to disguise it as anything else. It's just that the person who uploaded this video gave it an incorrect title (Not a WR, not 4:57) and a terrible description. Here is where it was originally published: tasvideos.org/1080M.html
Fake as hell. Not discounting the obvious piranha deaths, the give away was on World 1-2. The glitch that enables you to pass through the blocks and into the Warp Zone can't be completed the way this player attempted, because the ROM only loads active (properly working) pipes when you take the intended route; over the blocks at the top of the screen. The route this player took, which is commonly used for the Minus World glitch, wouldn't tell the game to load the correct data, such as the Warp Zone text and level information. Also, you can't even pass through the blocks at that speed or angle.
+FishEyeGuy Outdoors it's a bug at the start of the level that let's you accelerate faster, by pressing both left and right at the same time for one frame, this turns mario to the left, if you then jump on every frame where you land, you never turn back around
+Borja Saavedra Ramirez How he hit the Paratroopa? When Mario is falling, he's set to always stomp on enemies even if he's hitting them from below. That's just how the game was made, it's probably done like that to make it easier with the hit detection.
The uploader if this video isn't even the maker of the TAS. But yeah: It's really stupid to not give proper info on what it is... It's also not a "World Record" anyway.
Wan Chang Sing The tools used ina a TAS are mainly Frame Advance, Save States and RAM Watch, which is the case with this TAS as well. Here's the original version of this run: tasvideos.org/1330M.html
TAS can also make the game speed slower ,am i right?. btw does it show what ur opponent will do next move too?. i only know TAS but i never use it before.
Fiffinono There's are rumour that jumping and running backwards from time to time will increase your speed, however this is not true and just makes you look like a complete idiot.
SilverGames How does it make you look like an idiot? Because being able to pull off running backwards and not dying in this game is pretty good. It's also not 100% false, it's got some truth too it. I mean, if a TAS is doing it, there has to be.
Erasmo Samuel Martínez Hernández theres somewhat of a bug in the coding of this game where with basically any enemy, if you hit them while they are falling, it kills them. He does it quite a bit, though it is hard to do in a normal situation.
There is no hacking, people. This was somebody else's tool-assisted speedrun (not a legit human speedrun)! It uses tricks like fast acceleration to beat each level in the fastest time possible. A human would not dare to attempt fast acceleration except for in levels 8-1 and 8-4 (and maybe 4-2 if they were going for lightning 4-2 which nobody is). If you see Mario go through fire bars and piranha plants, Mario didn't touch the actual hitboxes. Heck, I could do a jump "through" a piranha plant coming out of a 4-block-tall pipe 100 times in a row (but not in All-Stars version where they increased hitbox size). But yeah, it's a TAS and someone else's TAS and it was posted as a normal world record to trick people (not submitted to leaderboards because it's almost as obviously not legit as Badabun's fake speedrun). But a human will jump over pipes with piranha plants just like you see here and it's NOT HACKING. Someone else put their time and effort into programming each individual frame to have the inputs they want and this person just stole it.
The irony where the faster you complete a level, the longer it takes to tally up all that leftover time at the end of a stage.
But each 1 second saved on the level run increases only a few miliseconds to account it at the end.

Andrew's World Record, not this video, was recorded liv on Twitch with his commentary. And he has been confirmed legit through his many live perfomances.
It says it's a tas in the bottom of the description
Either way it's still humanly possible to do this without a tas. It is a tool *assisted* speedrun, it still takes skill.
the origin site is tasvg.com.....
it took him 4 min to do what took me 18 years of my life.... Gun+mouth= me right now
It's a self-learning bot. The unnecesary jumping indicates that. It plays the level tons of times, and only saves the moves that dont kill him
+LeanderRandom I think its a TAS
That is not the case, Leander... As Alter said, this is a Tool Assisted Speedrun. It was recorded on an emulator frame by frame and with save states by Klmz. It's not done by any bots.
+LeanderRandom The Bot is namend MarIO i think
this is not marIO , this video is older than marIO.
What did this trick do I didn’t understand why he did that
@@joshmitchell8939 it let him skip the animation of mario walking into the castle and the flag going down the pole, saves a couple frame rules and there’s an even faster way to do it now
I felt really confident that I could also beat Mario this fast, but then I got killed by the first goomba...
umm.... do you know that jumping in mario bors exists! THIS MUST BE A SURPRISE To you! XD (Than Ur All Like ''OHHHHH,,)
me too but instead i got killed by Time Over

5) Doing it in purpose
6) Understanding that my comment was just a joke
This is amazing. We can truthfully say that we can beat this entire game in under five minutes now. That's amazing.
Why do the piranha plants not kill him? the amount of times he hits them :/ Good job though :)
because their collision is pretty dodgy, you can clip through them yourself, just need to be crazy precise.
+FpSMuffin its a tas run... look at the description... there is a link of the tas site
P.S. a tas is a hack/cheat tool
+FpSMuffin TAS
+nabbikill TAS stands for Tool Assisted Speedrun
+nabbikill Tool assist basically captures the frames and you compile the correct frames together. You would still need to know all the hitboxes and stuff to get it down right.
Anderewg1990 can do this in real time.

Yuh, sure, I’ll go with that.
@Meyfrator
Explain my reasoning with agreeing with you?
@Meyfrator
Understandable, internet people can be fascinating or be big ole b-holes.
This game is too short. It needs DLC, like Black Ops.
You're kidding right?
You sir.. Not you Julian.. but.. CoD? Really? Damm child..
I know I'm a good 6 years late but DLC means downloadable content, you cant download anything on a NES
@@chrishirst6933 I think he was joking...
I say fake. There were multiple spots where Mario should have taken damage but didn't.
He hit a paratroopa but didn't take damage
Lego Master: As long as Mario is in his falling animation, it doesn't matter where an enemy is hit, it will still be stomped on.
All through this video I'm thinking
"Wtf, that plant bit him but he didn't get hit?"
or "Wtf he jumped right into that turtle?"
Godmode
It's true exactly what I was thinking too
I thought I could play this so fast, and I can, but realy impressed with how he avoided the flowers coming out of the pipes so recklessly. I would at least take one mushroom to be big that's all, just in case
Crazy gameplay. Nice tas dude!
Very clearly a TAS. This is in no way a true WR.
Unless the name says "NO TAS", it's usually assumed it's a TAS WR.
What is TAS
Harvey Norton Tool Assisted Speedrun
+Zacharie You're completely wrong. Video games are designed for human players, and “world record speedruns” are considered human achievements by pretty much everyone.
Additionally, HappyLee holds the TAS record, so calling it the “TAS WR” would still be wrong.
Yep this is TAS because he jumps through the piranha plants.
He killed a hammer bro from under him? How did he not die? Was it the hitbox or something?
+Drew Newton The game is programmed so that as long as Mario is in his falling animation, it won't matter where he touches enemies, he'll stomp on them anyway.
no i thinks he's cheatibf
ah i dont see its NES sry mate

If this is a TAS it should be labeled TAS and not speed run.
TAS is allowed, But this guy/gal/thing is a fool and did not put "Super Mario Bros (NES & TAS) Speedrun.. If there is a TAS
TAS: Tool assisted *speed run*
goomba008
TAS =/= Speed run. Speed runs are done by a person without hacking the game and TAS are done with special programs that let people find the most optimal routs by editing and moving at one frame at a time.
There's a place for both but they can't be counted in the same category.
RizenLink Yes they can...
Is it a run? yes
Is it speedy? yes
Here's the categories for you (this is well-established nomenclature, what you think they should be is irrelevant):
- TAS speed runs
- Single segment speed runs
- Segmented speed runs
All are speed runs. They require different skills and talents. They are all impressive.
Consult the speed run wiki for more information. Good day sir
goomba008
You are so ignorant.
I'm pretty sure he died at 3:23. I'm not saying it's not possible to beat it so fast just saying it didn't happen here.
+James TOHME as long as Mario is in his falling animation he will stop anything doesn't matter where he hits them
Like many people, I've finished this game legit dozens of times. Now, I've watched and rewatched that bit. My thoughts:
1) Alex Camino, what you said may be true, but Mario seems to be in his jumping animation, not falling.
3:39 died
This is a TAS, because it's impossible to get 244 on the timer in 8-3 without using Left+Right.
So I'm to believe a HUMAN BEING did this? If so, I've never seen such impressive gaming. Except when I'M in the zone, of course :P
this is fake. its a tool-assisted speedrun the world record is 4:58
Duderson11 Yeah I know, I saw all the TAS comments down there.

Timeline:
2011: This video was made.
2013: Fast 4-2 and BBG discovered, BBG ruled out due to luck, but fast 4-2 was hard
2014: First 4:57/5:00 with BBG without 4-2, due to the "Golden Frame" principle
2015: FPG era: 4:57.01 was the human limit back then, until FPG's became humanly possible
2016: First 4:56/4:59 with 1-1 and 4-1 FPG's, and fast 4-2 with BBG
2017: 4-2 Blazit clip discovered, as well as the 1-2 347, enabling humans to get a 4:55
2018: First 4:55/4:58 on par with AndrewG's Any% plan, first pl8-1
2019: First KosmicZ BBG, first Kriller37 top clip
2020: First low 4:55 with KosmicZ BBG
2021: First 4:54 with pl8-1
2022? First low 4:54/4:57 with Kriller37 top clip?
2023? First 4:53 with 243 FPG?*

Mans summaried my childhood in 5 minutes

He doesn't die at 3:23 because Mario kills any enemy touching him while he's moving down except spinies and Bowser.
And Piranha Plants. Firebars and Podoboos don't count as they are not enemies, but environmental hazards.

Well regardless, he has to figure out my elaborate maze if he has any hope of OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD I see him, quick, where are my hammers???
their is no way he played this on an actual NES. i've played super mario bros on the original nes, and trust me, its impossible to jump THAT fast with an NES controller
also at 3:53 he hits the hammer brother on the BOTTOM.
and got hit by a bunch of enemies and didn't die. So pretty much this is definitly a hacked version
Gamemasterrod Actually, the hitboxes in this game are broken. Deal with it.
Gamemasterrod
Deal with it. Admit that the game is actually broken.
This is a TAS. He used save states, slowdown and stuff like that on a emulated version.
For who is wondering this because they're stupid, he doesn't die to the piranha plants because they're hitbox is so small that you can just jump over it. And this is not fake it's just a tas

+Sayr Don't be a newbie, problem solved. It's not that serious.
Jerad Scharrer It's inevitable. There will always be "newbies".
you really expect me to believe this when the hit box has been modified
***** The hitboxes work the same exact way as displayed in this run as they do for anyone playing the NES version of the game. 100% identical.
***** It's not about skill, it is about being extremely time consuming. Your argument is moronic.
He IS using a cheat. Just prior to 1:25 he passes directly through the secon plant without diing

+Henry Jones Jnr. not fake just tas
wrong it is possible i had those glitches too i did them by mistake i was like: wow look shyt im stuck in wall wtf i still can walk o.O

Nothing really
to look cool
Mario telling bowser he's not even trying, and that he'll pretty much moonwalk, run and jump it the whole way :)

+Borja Saavedra Ramirez Its a tool assisted run its ment for speed, A lot of game mechanics dont count

It's also not a "World Record" anyway.
yea such dumbass published trying to trick us, should have provide information like what tools u were using and so on.
I have seen many speed runs such as TAS tools user and live speed runs. this thing can't trick me.
Wan Chang Sing The tools used ina a TAS are mainly Frame Advance, Save States and RAM Watch, which is the case with this TAS as well.
Here's the original version of this run: tasvideos.org/1330M.html
TAS can also make the game speed slower ,am i right?. btw does it show what ur opponent will do next move too?. i only know TAS but i never use it before.

why is he all backwards all the time?
Fiffinonohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Fiffinono There's are rumour that jumping and running backwards from time to time will increase your speed, however this is not true and just makes you look like a complete idiot.
SilverGames idiot with world record.
Fiffinono Plot-twist:
The speedrun was done by Michael Jackson.
SilverGames How does it make you look like an idiot? Because being able to pull off running backwards and not dying in this game is pretty good. It's also not 100% false, it's got some truth too it. I mean, if a TAS is doing it, there has to be.
This is a TAS run, you should make that more obvious to people who don't know that.
3:23 in slowmo
Yeah, it's a good place to show how the game mechanics work.
Erasmo Samuel Martínez Hernández theres somewhat of a bug in the coding of this game where with basically any enemy, if you hit them while they are falling, it kills them. He does it quite a bit, though it is hard to do in a normal situation.
WTF?! 1:53
DaBawmb It's an extremely precise glitch.
Plus it uses l+r, banned from RTA speedruns and impossible on controller
Meh. TAS
