Your hit by lightning story is better than my hit by drunk driver story!
EEKS - I hope you were OK...
Them darn electrons! They may be tiny and insignificant on their own, but things get crazy when they all gang up and go haywire! You nearly got Coulombic Colonic flush!
LOL - love it;)
My dad was hit by lightning whilst working in an electrical room made of corrugated metal that was outside (dog-track tote-board controls) during a thunderstorm in Arizona...did I mention my dad was a genius. Luckily his wife heard the thunder and went to check on him and called the medics. He woke up in the hospital three days later worse-for-the-wear as it damaged his heart and he was never the same after that.
Also had an ex-girlfriend who was hit by lightning while driving. It was in 1990 and she had a brand new Toyota Corolla and was on I-10 just outside of Jacksonville, FL when struck. The only damage was a softball sized hole in a rear tire!
Wow - crazy stories!! I bet the lightning hit the car and exited thru the wheel blasting its way thru the rubber to get to the ground. Scary!
Sounds like my experience with brain trauma (thrown by a horse). Suddenly I was in a field, ambulance showed up, arrived at hospital. Released maybe 6 hours later, and that's about all I remember. You are very lucky that you were conscious enough to pull over.
Wow - your story sounds scary. Yes, I was lucky! Thanks!
Love these Tech Talk Fridays. Great idea and interesting story!
Thanks so much!
Wow that's insane... I love these kind of stories. Maybe you might do more stories and example of surge protection and HV high amperage switches for capacitors, that would be very interesting to see. Glad you're ok :)
Thanks for your great feedback! I appreciate you!
In the 1980s, when I worked for KUAT in Tucson, one day, the Chief Engineer was replacing one of the lights on the 398 ft. AM xmttr tower. In Tucson, during the rainy season, it will often be bright & sunny, then a thunderstorm will form and pass through, without warning. That's what happened while our C.E. was up on the tower. And you don't get down from a tower like that quickly, except, maybe, with a parachute. Lightning struck the tower, while he was climbing down. He wasn't harmed, no doubt because he was wearing rubber-soled boots, and so presented a significant resistance, compared to that of the steel tower. I had my own experience with atmospheric potential gradients, at that xmttr site. I was outside, when my head felt tingly, and my hair stood out on end. I immediately hit the ground, and made myself as flat as possible, and nothing happened. I'm certain that had I remained standing, I would have become a human lightning rod.
Thanks for the scary stories!! Yes, when your hair stand up - that is natures last warning...
Luckily you weren't driving a convertible.
I used to work in lightning protection and once when we were working on a silo, dark clouds came and some flashes in the distance. While I was working I felt some tingling in my arms and the copper cables were loose and not yet assembled on the roof for installation.
I ordered the employees to go inside immediately.
When we got back the cables were a bit melted together and blue.
And i love lightning to.
Thanks for the great story!
Cool story. I was nearly struck by lightning. Not a direct hit. But lightning struck a water tower as I was directly under it. Same sensation. I saw the flash, felt like I got punched. Dazed me. I remember looking out the windshield and saw a big thick black cloud of smoke above my car. At the time I thought I took a direct hit. The car was fine. But had to pull over and take a moment.
Wow!!! Thanks for this great story! Lightning is scary - once you get this close...
Awesome story Eddie, thanks for sharing. Sounds like that was a really cool job too.
Thanks for watching
That was definitely a story worth sharing. And it never hurts to remind your audience that you have the work experience to really know what you are talking about ;-)
You were talking about being in a vehicle protecting you from lighting do to it being a Faraday cage, and you said it protects you, "sort of". Sounds like what happened is that even though all the current stayed on the outside of the metal cage you were in, that didn't stop the arc blast from jarring your brain pretty good.
Thanks so much! Yes - it did rack my brain. Also, I have since heard of someone hit by lightning thru the windshield and killed them...but that was second hand story...
Amazing storey. Thank goodness you were not hurt worst. Thanks for sharing your experience. Very interesting. I have seen a couple big lightning storms, they are amazing.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate you!
Thanks for sharing your lightning story and looking forward to your isolation transformer video.
Thanks so much! I posted the first isolation transformer video to my channel members only. I just thought it was too long and it didn't turn out as direct as I wanted it to. So, I am going to do another - shorter and to the point in the next few day. The first one took me 3 days;)
@@KissAnalog Thanks Eddie. I actually don’t mind your long videos!! lol
HI Eddie, thanks for telling the story, it is fun to hear some of your experiences. 😁
Glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate you!
Mother nature was testing your therories you guys were coming up with : )
Yes - I think Thor was feeling challenged;)
Wow what an interesting story! You should tell more stories about your electronics jobs, and also it would be interesting to hear how you went into electronics, where you grew up, and so on!
I also got struck with lightning and by coincidence? Had a problem for a while with my right forearm and my lower bicep being sore for a few days, and I couldn't fully extend my arm, it hurt kind of like if you lift too heavy a weight too many times is the best I can explain it. I was in my basement, operating a Morse code key with my right hand. I should have gone to the hospital, but instead of doing so, I had a beer and went to bed. The Heathkit SB series radio I was operating survived 100% intact, by the way. What I've learned about all Electronics, Physics, Electrochemistry, and all of those formulas and equations is this: No matter what... Lightning does whatever the Hell it wants to do. And just like those people who stand in line for lottery cigarettes while smoking cigarettes? Today just might be your "lucky" day, or your "very unlucky" day. I follow the NEC codes, because you have to, but in spite of it all (again!): Lightning does whatever the Hell it wants to, and other than accepting the Lord as your Savior and having insurance beforehand, there's not much that you can do about it. I STILL get paranoid crossing a parking lot on a lightning prone day with all of those overhead security lights, but the TRUTH is that the "safety cone" of 1/3 the diameter on the ground around these poles (or any grounded pole) of such a light likely protects you from a strike is just what my LOGICAL brain says to me. In no way does it really minimize my fear vs respect vs caution. Ever. Ever! All the Best, Eddie! 73 DE W8LV BILL
Thanks Bill!! That's a crazy story - but I hear that beer deionizes the body after an electric shock ;) Well - at least that's my theory ;)
In 1999 there was a tornado here in Oklahoma, big shocker, I know.
I was driving myself and my 8 months pregnant wife parallel to it a few miles away because we were trying to get home.
Our car was struck by lightning going down the road. There was a bright flash and the car shut off in the middle of the road. Probably 5 minutes later, I was able to start the car again and we drove the rest of the way home. The only lasting effect on the car seemed to be it gained a propensity for switching to KPH instead of MPH randomly after that.
Wow - that is a crazy story! Thank you for sharing it!!
That was a wild ride 😮
Yes - it was...makes an impact for sure;)
wow that's crazy i had a lightning strike right in front of me leaving St. George UT. through that little canyon towards the west.
I know what canyon you are talking about - there is often crazy weather there. I once hit a snow storm that was like a blanket - that I drove thru. St George side good - but just like that - I was in a deep heavy snow storm. Another time it was a rain and thunder storm that was crazy heavy... Fun and crazy part of Utah;)
I'm guessing you didn't mention the bit about working at a HV laboratory on the insurance claim form! I have a feeling an insurance assessor would find that 'suspicious' rather than 'ironic'!
LOL - I didn't have to do an insurance claim. The warranty took care of it and I did tell them that I was hit by lightning. I had the extra coverage where they came out and picked up the car too;)
When I was about 10 living in South Africa, the utility pole outside my friends house got struck by lightning in the middle of the day, in fair weather. It was so loud we though a bomb had gone off, and his dad hurried us inside and scoped the place out with a firearm.
Wow - that is crazy. Mother nature is not to be played with;)
They say Nikola Tesla was born during a thunderstorm, kind of explaining his affinity with electricity . . .
Wow - that is very interesting!
That Rover was haunted...
It really was ;) It gave me so many problems - mechanical mostly.
Did you ever make a video (as suggested by me) on making a filter to eliminate the noise on the output of a SMPS? You said you would.
Maybe I missed it.
Sorry - I bought the stuff to do it - but have had some things come up. I will do it soon though... It will likely be a 2 part or more series to fully cover it.
I love looking at lightning also, lightning looks sooo cool but dangerous at the same time, how did it felt getting hit by lightning?
Thanks for your feedback! After getting hit - I am a bit skittish now;)
Living on the edge is when you purposely create lightning daily to tease the gods and drive around in unreliabke British cars, only to switch to a more unreliable Jeep. 😅 Thor just picked the biggest thrill seeker.
LOL - you are right! ;)
I wonder if you also got a dose of transcranial magnetic stimulation (wikipedia has a page if you want to know more). Basically, a sharp magnetic pulse in the vicinity of the head can induce a brief current pulse in the squishy conductor inside of said head. Generally considered safe (unlike its clinical predecessor electroconvulsive therapy), but not particularly effective, adverse effects can include fainting and working memory impairment.
I've been close (maybe 25 feet) to lightning strikes a couple of times. Once when a lamp post across the corner from where I was stopped at a light was struck (the photocell can turned into a spray of burning aluminum droplets) and again when lightning struck a brick chimney on the apartment building next to where I was standing on a porch watching the storm (I noticed a Lichtenberg pattern of spalled bricks on the exterior face of the chimney afterwards).
Thanks for this informative feedback! You might be right about the transcranial magnetic stimulation. I was definitely stimulated in a strange way;)
Wow - it is scary to be that close!!
nice
Thanks!
You probably got hit by the E.M.P as well, caused the car to become a massive inductor.
Yes - I think you are right. It is a good thing - or that might have been a different story...
Speaking of isolation transformers... I've got a Sola Constant Voltage Transformer dating back to the '40s or '50s. How does an isolation transformer with no taps or moving parts able to do some degree of voltage regulation for loads up to about 30 watts?
Great question! There are no taps or moving parts needed for an isolation transformer. If it is rated for - say 60 VA then it should be great for a 30 Watts. Just depends on the Power factor of the load.
@@KissAnalog I think you missed the boat on my question. The constant voltage transformer is made so it runs in saturation to achieve regulation. This makes me wonder what the output waveform looks like under load. I suspect it will be somewhat distorted then.
Was it the shock wave you felt or arc blast?
I think I was lucky and didn't get the arc but probably more of the EMP.
