LONDON: IMPERIAL WAR MUSUEM, what to see
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 май 2017
- Imperial War Museum (IWM), London - what to see at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in London in 2 hours. Let's go to London and let's visit the world famous Imperial War Museum (IWM) which is a British national museum organisation. Founded as the Imperial War Museum in 1917, the IWM museum (Imperial War Museum) was intended to record the civil and military war effort and sacrifice of Britain and its Empire during the First World War. The Imperial War Museum's remit has since expanded to include all conflicts in which British or Commonwealth forces have been involved since 1914. As of 2012, the Imperial War Museum aims "to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of the history of modern war and 'wartime experience'".
The museum's collections include archives of personal and official documents, photographs, film and video material, and oral history recordings, an extensive library, a large art collection, and examples of military vehicles and aircraft, equipment, and other artefacts.

Hey Vic your presentation , direction and camera work is of a higher quality than most Hollywood movies. You have a rare gift. Keep making these docco's. Brilliant work.
Hi Ed, thank you for your wonderful comments!!
Vic Stefanu the time period ur talking about use IMPERIAL measure
I was there in 1997, while on a business trip. My coworkers thought I was nuts, for going by myself, from the hotel, via the underground, to see this museum. If you like military history, this is the place. The museum at that time, also had a great deal about WW1, and other british military interventions, not just WW2. I was pretty surprised to see an area dedicated to the Balkan/ Salonika campaign even. It had an area based on the "Blitz" of 1940, as well. I have a picture of myself in front of "Montys" armored car. They also have a gift shop where you can buy memorabilia. I have a poster of Winston Churchill from the war. If you are a history buff, especially military history. If in the UK, gotta go here.
Hi and thank you for your comments. I agree with you, this is THE PLACE/MUSEUM to visit if you are a history buff. I have been going there for the last 10 years and I always see different things displayed.
It's a waste of time now - they gutted the whole place and filled it with a load of screens. Style over substance, another great museum cannibalised to make room for screens
@@ethanreeves6676 I agree... Thank you for your comments!
It is truly a great location. Thanks for great videos and Greetings from WW2HistoryHunter
Outstanding tour Vic. I'm a military historian my self . the young people have got to know the sacrifices the military made to keep us free. Much respect from the USA.🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧.

Hello, thank you for watching my videos!!
new to your channel and thought i would watch this before deciding to subscribe , it took 6min in before i subscribe . your commentary and camera work is awesome , i really like the fact you aren't jumping from one exhibit to the next and its not all jerky like a lot of others i have watched . Thanks Vic for sharing
Hi Azza, thank you for your comments and for subscribing!!
many thanks, can't afford to go to england, but if i could i would have visited this museum, now i was able to see some if it; thank you sir.i am a 72 years old canadian from montreal and i am most interested in history so,many thanks, god bless.
Hi Jacques, thank you for viewing my videos, I am so glad you liked this one!
I hope you can save and come to England soon. London is very expensive but its much cheaper to rent a small house for a week or two in the midlands and moreso in the North where the locals are much more friendly. I am from Cheshire near Manchester and it is expensive even for me to live in London as house prices are often 4 times the price pr square foot compared to the north. Another thing is no matter where you are in the UK you are always only around 1 hr drive to the coast due to its size. The scenery all over the UK is gorgeous as long as you get away form major cities.
do what the migrants do arrive on the south coast in a raft
I wish I could see the IWM. Thank you for your vidio tour 👍🇬🇧
My pleasure!
Thanks Vic, this video was very interesting and historical! My Daddy would have really enjoyed it as well!👍🕊️

Thank you!!
An amazing tour of an amazing place!
Thank you for your comments!!
I am going to London in mid September. So much looking forward to my visit to IWM. Thank you for the introduction.
Have a great time in London!!
Be sure to take time out for exploring outside of London. London itself barely represents what England really has to offer. When I go on holiday staying in the British Isles \i never goto London. In the Midlands and North its much cheaper and the countryside is breathtaking in beauty. You are only 1 hr MAX drive to the seaside when in Britain and so I can get a train and goto say Blackpool in just 45 mins which is awesome. Everyone visits or stays in London and it always makes me feel like I want to tell people not to go to London which by far least represents what Britain or the English life is like.
Anyways hope you really enjoy your visit:))
Thank you for your comments... I doubt if one can make it to Blackpool from London in 45 minutes, however..
I spent hours at this museum. It is incredible. Got there at opening and left at closing.
Wow my friend, that is a lot of hours to be at the museum...
The BMW motorcycle with side car, its a must. Just awesome.

Thanks for your museum tour. The Reichstag was in the British occupation zone of Berlin and that's how the eagle came to England.
Ok, that makes sense, thank you!

Fascinating...I'm going there on Saturday..
Enjoy your visit!
Take a few snaps for me.
Of your video, my favorite piece is the eagle. Little would Hitler know when it was erected in the Reich Chancellery that, ultimately, it would wind up in an English museum in the heart of the capital of London symbolizing his defeat.
Yes, true.. Thank you for your comments!
ゆっくりとはっきりとした音声でとっても英語が聞き取りやすかったです!ありがとうございます^^今度IWM LONDONに行くのですが、事前情報としてより理解を深めることができました。Your English voice was slowly clear and it was easy to hear. Thank you.I'm going to IMW London now, so I was able to deepen my understanding as advance information.

Oh, my father and grandfather would enjoy your War episodes
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!!
Loved seeing the Humber "Pig"! One of my favorite vehicles - probably because I never had to ride in one! Wonder how long it would take to go through the museum and see everything?
probably around 4 hours...thank you for your comments!
This WAS the best military museum in the UK, but the recent renovation turned it into a gallery/exhibition space. Thousands of exhibits used to be on display and are no gone from public view. There isn't a single WW2 British or German uniform, helmet etc etc to be seen! The trench and blitz experience were removed and there are now multiple coffee and book shops where these used to be.
I agree with you 100%!! I went to the Museum in March and looked all over of an exhibit that I had seen so many times in the past, it was showing how the trains were entering and leaving Auschwitz (the person that created it had managed to show exactly the process, something no other person could put together or had done before). They had taken the whole display apart (it was occupying a large room) and when I spoke to the director, he admitted that it was a great display but the trustees decided to take it away (along with other WW2 items) in order to expand the Holocaust part of the museum..
Vic, good stuff sir. Would love to see ya do some American Civil war stuff.
I wish I had videotaped all the civil war sites I had visited in the USA (Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, etc) but unfortunately at that time I was not videotaping anything.. maybe one day soon, I will go back..
Probbably the best military history museum in the World. Sobering when I last visited to find artefacts of men I served with in and before First Gulf War, for some who did not come home. In my military service the numbers lost would sound normal for the first World War, and yet none know. the numbers are hidden.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Excellent video. Keep it up!
Thank you!!
It’s a bot
Just out of interest...the building it'self was the former lunatic asylum and Hospital known as Old Bedlam.(original Royal Bethlehem.)....from which we get the English word meaning chaotic or crazy....Bedlam. It became the home of the I.W.M in in 1936.
The I.W.M has other sites around the country, including Duxford and Manchester (IWM North) and HMS Belfast.
Thank you for all this information!!
SuperAncientmariner ty for the info! Who says RUclips comments are poison?
I was there in 2014, fantastic place!!
Thanks for watching! 👍👍👍
@@VicStefanu You're welcome.
After seeing your pacific war locations I'm ready to join you. Now if I can find a way to travel to all these places of history and get my bills paid I'm all over that.
lol... thank you for your comments!!
Amazing.I've only seen these WWll weapons on war footage film. But seeing them in this museum I now get a true feeling of WWll armaments. The 88mm anti-tank anti-aircraft was amazing along with the Russian T-34 tank.Yes,the T-34.The tank that helped Russia win the war.
Hi and thank you for your comments!
very informtive ...
thnks Vic...
are u back into P. Containertown yet? lol
Hi, I am actually in Lebanon right now videotaping the fascinating city of Beirut!!
You state that Heinz Snaufer (sp?) was by far the greatest fighter ace of Germany during the war -- need to correct you on that...
Erich Hartmann is the man you should be talking about -- 352 confirmed victories. Over 100 German aces scored over 100 victories. Snaufer was famous because he was the highest scoring German night fighter ace.
Thank you for this very interesting information!!
Yes, that is correct...
I am uncertain to credit the enormous totals the German aces shot down. In the Western Desert Hans-Joachim Marseille was credited on shooting down 5 Kittihawks on a day when the RAF lost none!
Terry Shulky many of his kills were against inferior Russian aircraft he certainly would not of taken out 300 modern aircraft of the RAF.
Yes, Hartmann was the king of the hill.
Perhaps Snaufer had the record on downing Allied bombers not fighters?
The Sherman actually first entered the war in 1942 in North Africa
Thank you for this information!
...care a fost interesant, Vic.
Mulțumesc
Think yuere the upgraded flak 36 to the flak 37 it's definitely got the ROHL 18 updated barrel for the 37 cool as heck
oh boý, I want to go there so bad
Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
It is a good video, although i disagree with some points, it isn't rare to see a t-34 in museums, they were heavily produced and sold througout the second world war, the korean war and was also sold to third world countries, most museums have them, U-boats were also very effective throughout the whole war not just physically but they would affect the morale of most sailors.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
don't forget to check out Captain William Blighs (The Bounty) house just opposite and Charlie Chaplins house across from the Peace Park
ah, ok! thank you for your comments!
in addition to Rolls Royce, Packard Motors of the US manufactured many of Merlin engines under license which were used in the P51 mustang and other aircraft. Packards modern manufacturing methods really surpassed the quality of the English built engines. also the Merlin was used in the Dehavilland Mosquito bomber.
Very true, thank you for your comments and for viewing my videos!!
and I forgot to include the Lancaster Bomber.
Yes, thank you!!
Merlins are small, fierce falcons that use surprise attacks to bring down small songbirds and shorebirds. They are powerful fliers, but you can tell them from larger falcons by their rapid wingbeats and overall dark tones. Medieval falconers called them “lady hawks,” and noblewomen used them to hunt Sky Larks. Or Merlin: sorcerer and soothsayer in Arthurian legends, from Old French form of Welsh Myrddhin, probably from Old Celtic *Mori-dunon, literally "of the sea-hill," from *mori "sea" (from PIE root *mori- "body of water") + dunom "hill" (see dune).
The quality of the Packard Merlin was NOT in any way superior to the RR manufactured version. Suggest you look at the manufacturing specs of both engines. The one slight difference was an oil seal which was made from a different material. They were mechanically and performance-wise identical.
you have nice video
Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
Bingo .....:)
tke care....

looking forw.to Lebanon vids...thnks Vic**********
The one In Manchester is very good aswell.
I agree... I have been there as well but, unfortunately, I have no video..
V1 the first cruise missile and the V2 the forerunner of all ICBM's
Yes, thank you!
My favorite tank, the t-34-85
Thank you for viewing my videos!!
I went there on Wednesday, 27th February 2019
I hope that you enjoyed your visit, thank you for your comments!
YusraDIY many things to do here at DIY Could you tell me what tanks were there as I need research for my course. Would really appreciate it!
A shadow of its former greatness, however. Most exhibits were removed and it is now more like an art gallery. There used to be several WW2 tanks on the ground floor and more WW2 aircraft suspended from the ceiling. There was a walk-through section of a Halifax bomber ..... gone. The WW1 trench experience was fantastic .... also gone.. The entire basement level, which was packed with fascinating material was removed altogether.
I agree.. This museum is now very different compared to the first time I visited it around 2008.. I remember all the tanks on the first floor, now gone with the Russian tank left..
...glad I got to see it in '95, as a Kiwi soldier on leave from Bosnia. Wonderful memory was seeing an old veteran wearing his RTR tie, who was also visiting the museum. As an RNZAC soldier, it was confirmation that the Commonwealth ties that bond, are more stronger in some areas than in others. Fear Naught.
Sorry but I need to correct you on the German Eagle. Hitlers bunker was not under the Reichstag and the Reichstag was built in 1894 NOT 1939. The Reich Chancellery was finished in 1939. The Reichstag and the Reich Chancellery are two completely seperate buildings about a mile from each other. The eagle is from the Reich Chancellery not the Reichstag.
Hi Karl, you are absolutely right, my mistake. This Eagle came from the Reich Chancellery..
The best in the world
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
I'm sure that V2 is a replica if I remember correctly
It is a real V2 with the original engine..
The Eagle was located not in the Reichstag, but in the Reichs chancellery.
That's right.. thank you for the clarification..
Your'e welcome :-)
It is quite an extraordinary artifact. I had seen it many times in documentaries. I wonder how the museum was able to get it's hands on it.
No one seems to know how this artifact ended up in England...
The IWM stands where the former Bedlam lunatic asylum was located.
Ok, thank you!
The building used to be Bedlam Mental Hospital,
Yes.. thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
Reichstag was built 1894 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_building
Thank you!
I thought the most successful engine of the second world war was the Pratt Wasp 2800?
It depends on whom you ask..
Who did you ask?
@@tisoy909 The staff at the museum
The Reichstag in Berlin was build between 1884 and 1894 not in 1939.
You are right, I was referring to the Chancellery here.. Thank you for your comments...
Excellent video! However, @ 16:57 Mr. Stefanu states that Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker. Even when this video was published in 2017 it was pretty common knowledge that Hitler survived the war and lived in south America until his death in the early 1960's.
A lot of historians would disagree with your version regarding Hitler's death..
@@MrMenefrego1 Ok, thank you for all this information. I am well aware of the controversies surrounding Hitler's death and whereabouts about 1945, however you are mentioning here the Soviets who arrived that place where the burned body of Hitler was located at and proceeded into removing the remains. Hitler's teeth were saved and it has been proven that indeed that was his teeth.. No one wants to mention this..
I bet, the Iwans keep more of Hitlers remains, deep frozen. Why does nobody report on Eva Brauns remains, directly placed aside Hitlers body ?
Facit: All the stories about Hitlers death are questionable.
2 german ace's with over 300 kills , over 100 to 300 were tons sub 100 was more , this german ace tore up the UK stuff , but was no big deal to german air force . the german supermen were real they were in the air force
Thank you for viewing my videos!
Dane Hart depends on how you look at it, Hartmann was the best fighter pilot, Schnaufer the best nightfighter and Rudel the best Ground attack pilot/best overall pilot of the war 🤷♂️
Schnaufer was the most successful german nightfighter pilot and not the most successfull fighter pilot. That was Erich Hartmann.
Ok, thank you!!
A very good museum, disappointed though that it only covers the 20th and 21st history. Nothing about the Crimean War, Napoleonic Wars and so on. But still good, worth a visit. Though my favourite military museum in London is the Army Museum for the reason stated
Hi Alan, thank you for your comments. I find the Army Museum too dark and not as interesting...
I think a lot depends on a person interests. If a person is only interested in 20th century warfare than the Imperial War Museum is a must visit. But for someone like me who is interested in ALL military history than I will find the Army museum better. Yet even that only goes back to the creation of the first standing army in Britain. My favourite all time military museum is not to be found in the UK but rather in Bucharest, Romania. The Army Museum there has stone spearheads from the Neolithic age, some from 10,000 BC. It has Vlad Dracula's (The Impaler) armour and sword, muskets from the 17th, 18th, and 19th Century and outside tanks, artillery and aircraft from the 20th. It is the only military museum I have been in that covers every age of warfare and if you have not already been to Romania is a must for any military history buff
I would ask you. Have you been to Nepal, if not include it in your collection of countries visited. I have been to Nepal 30 times since the 1990s, as I have close friends in Kathmandu who are like family to me,
Hi and thank you for your reply. I have been to Bucharest and did not visit the museum you are mentioning here. I will be going back soon and will certainly pay a visit, I hope that they allow videotaping..
Yes, I have been to Nepal, around 5 years ago. I spent 2 weeks there, what a place.. I need to go back, I will do so probably in 2019..
ive been there i live in london
Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
thx
I don't think V1s and V2s killed 30,000 people in Britain. About 30,000 were killed in the "Blitz" 1940-1941. More people were killed in air raids later; and then between June 1944 and March 1945 about 6000 people were killed by the V weapons.
Hi, the figures that I mentioned in this video came from the information provided by the Museum....
Which is probably why they are false.
I whas bin there
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
It used to be The Bethlehem Hospital, Bedlam, the UKs oldest and biggest psychiatric hospital - how fitting to house a war museum, and a glorification of Empire at that
