Even with the knowledge that this was during the peak years of Jim Crow laws and lynching, this is particularly vile. But its necessary to show the kind of thinking that told audiences of that time had in allowing such things. I hope that some of the rap music of recent times will one day be looked upon with similar disgust.

@wnc817 OH My Fucking God you and your Kind always accuse of No Proof. Are you some kind of Idiot? Please tell me it's a Joke. You've made that Word Meaningless. Black People speak English too.
I think the problem we have in this country is that white people like to think the racism used to be at about a 9 and now it's down around a 2. But really, it used to be around 10,000 and now it's down around 4,000. Huge progress, sure. And still insanely racist. The idea we could come down from the country represented in this song in only 100 years is totally absurd.
This was a very common practice. Many songs of the time had very similar melodies. "Turkey in the Straw" which today has the melody for "Do Your Ears Hang Low" is actually older, and can be traced back to a Minstrel Show tune, "Old Zip Coon" 1834. However, even that is debated, as there were several songs predating even that with seemingly similar music; "Natchez Under the Hill", "The Old Bog Hole", "The Rose Tree", "Sugar in the Gourd", "The Black Eagle", "Glasgow Hornpipe", "Haymaker's Dance", "The Post Office", "Old Mother Oxford", "Kinnegad Slasher" and others.
Always a favorite singer and song, but I'm not too sure about this version. Thanks for the scarce upload nonetheless :) ethnic humor is an equally opportune humor for all of us in the world.

@Randall Slaughter Shit take. People in the USA lynched a black man every day of 1901, always because they were provoked, right? You really think BLM, a movement started due to police bruatlity against the colored poor, is a good reason to be racist and cruel?
In a world where for the last 30 years there have been Rap songs and etc. that say the N-word 50 times per minute, are we really surprised that some people have become desensitized to such slurs?
@@ZeusTheTornado tbf, a lot of the comments here are coming from older folks like "aww I remember when my grandma used to sing this to me." So you can't exactly say that these people were "desensitized" to these slurs because of rappers.

It was probably recorded on an Edison Phonograph cylinder before it was mechanically duplicaed onto a 78. Many early recordings were warbly because recording on an Edison phonograph was extreamly difficult compared to later recording equipment.

This sounds eerily similar to 'Tell Me Pretty Maidens' from the hit show, Floradora, of about the same time. It's no doubt a take-off from it.
