I once told my class I felt like I was talking to a wall and then went up to the wall and started teaching my lesson to it. Got my students attention! Lol
Sometimes when I start loosing their attention I just start singing my instructions! One time after talking to one of my students many many times I finally started singing to her to the tune of the song hungry eyes ( an old 80's song) " Ashley don't make me give you my angry eyes." To which we both started laughing. It totally broke the tension and got her attention. We able to move on from it. But now it's become a very popular song in the classroom all the time!!
I also sometimes teach from the back of the room, which they hate because they don't really know where I am without turning around, stops them talking amongst themselves too.
I hit an opera note at many times and the old English always works. Some dance moves. The whispering fluctuations yes I testify those do work. Just some theatre drama effects ..just ignoring them also at times and continuing my lesson even when they are not interested generally brings them back to finding some focus...( essentially the key is not allowong myself to getting frustrated, not taking it personal..and keeping it as light as possible) good video.
Great tips! I have just sit down and stop talking completely. They usually start nudging each other and tell each other to pay attention. I also whisper. I’m an Academic Coordinator at a large international school in Saudi Arabia and I’m sharing your links with my KG teachers. Thanks so much. I look forward to watching more.
As a theatre teachers soon-to-be, and a former parapro, I would use my ability to push students down into their seats with my mind & hands..... alll HANDS FREE!!!!! without touching the students. If I needed the students to get in a line, I would step back, and (think Mr. Bean squishing people's heads) Put my hands out in front of me and strain against the defiant effort of the kids not moving/ sitting whatever I needed. Most students would comply and those that didn't get it or understand would turn to their peers and tell them, 'She's trying to get you to move" or "Move so& so." This worked great at the middle school level and had somewhat great results in the high school. Trying to use my telekinesis to get the students complying with sitting, waiting/stopping, or lining up worked, but you have to be willing to add the theatrics and look strange or silly at first.
I love your shirt lol, I need to get one , my kids are gonna have a kick out of it lol. AND OMG Yes whispering surprisingly works so well ! THnk you for the random word idea, I'll have to remember that one !
I just start talking to one table of kids, random talk like, I could really eat some chicken nuggets right now, makes everybody turn and listen and then go into instructions, 😄
Here in Vietnam, the kids play a kind of hackeysack, so I will pull one of those feather-arrow things that they use to play it and bounce it with my foot a few times before I tell them to put it away. If I can't bounce it right, I laugh at myself and they laugh at me ; )
Haha ok so we have a hands and eyes code called mirror hands. Hehe its interesting because I have 2 students who love to move so much, once I keep repeating "please listen" they start waving. Absolute quiet quick cause they have to multi task; wave hands and track the teacher. Its student initiated though. So get 2 students on board as the listen leaders and they will do the work for you. The key is a multi task thing and a student who will initiate it like clock work.
In many schools, kids have heard the song "I can make your hands clap". So all you need to do is clap twice, then a couple of the GIRLS will clap 3 times in response, (Just like the song). Then you clap 2 more claps and half the class claps in response. By the 3rd time, even the BOYS join in and everyone is listening. Might not work in the highschool, Havent seen it done there.
the problem is coercive schooling! not the teacher! we have to stop forcing kids to learn stuff they do not care about. Theatrical talents are wasted here. Use them elsewhere!

I make a 'megaphone' out of my hands and say something like 'important announcement '. Sure gets their attention.
I'm happy I found your channel. Going into my student teaching and your optimistic attitude is refreshing
I stop abruptly, go to an empty desk (preferably close to the worst offenders) and sit down. Just sit there. Confuses them immensely.
Interesting!

Your shirt. I totally needed it today.
I'm new so I went almost in tears to the teacher next door to come talk to my class because they wouldn't listen. It was that or explode!!!
Been there, Sweetie. It will get better. Try to have fun with them.
