  • A 17lb dog is being hospitalized for sago palm ingestion, which causes liver toxicity. The veterinarian plans to treat with acetylcysteine at a dosage of 140mg/kg. How much acetylcysteine will you draw up? The concentration of acetylcysteine is 20%.
If acetylcysteine is given IV at its original 20% concentration, it can cause phlebitis and anaphylaxis. You are asked to dilute the dose to 5% prior to administration. How much sterile water will you need to add to achieve a 5% concentration?
