  • This structure gave us the BEST start going off the grid, and we are finally ready to turn it into an enclosed work shop. Full build video with time lapse and voice over narration. Tour and cost at the end.
We based our solar design off of this website. If you want to know more, check it out. www.purplealie...
This video was filmed and then edited entirely on my android phone using InShot:inshotapp.page... video editor. It wasn't easy, but I somehow I made it work. 😅🏜️

I've worked in the cement industry for 45 years. You really should have had reinforcement in the concrete and expansion material between the 4 pads. I would suggest you put saw cuts across the floor where the pad joints were, about 80% depth, so that when the concrete wants to crack and move you have some control over where it happens. You can fill the saw cuts with something flexible if you want.

Because concrete expands and contracts thermally almost as much as steel. Maybe where this is, may have a temperature difference of up to 50 degrees centigrade in 12 hours. so without an internal skeleton structure it will soon form stress fractures and small cracks dont stay small if there is nothing holding it together. however lets hope 4 small 6 inch slabs will be fine. @@baratmalli6413

45 years? And you don’t realize you don’t need rebar with fiber mesh?

      @davidmcd8400 10 месяцев назад

If you have a chance take a jackhammer to concrete with steel mesh , rebar , fiber mesh, and then no reinforcing at all . The reason will become very apparent . @@J297WFD

@@J297WFD I missed any mention of fibermesh. No need to get snarky. Also fiber is added for specific purposes which does not include replacing rebar for heavy traffic sustainability.

Thumbs up! A little trick when drilling for those who don't know is. drill a pilot hole first. The pilot hole size should be the same size as the tip of your final drill bit. When I say the tip I mean where the two edges meet on the drill bit. It will drill like butter after if your drill bit is sharp.
Edit: Wrote my comment before seeing you drill the pilot hole. hehehe

A tip for bending rod. Use a piece of pipe over the rod. Even if it is not as long as the rod it will support and reinforce the rod next to the bend. This takes the curve out and makes it more square. Caution: a tight square bend makes the rod weaker in that bend significantly. So use a gentle bend if using the rod for reinforcement, like in concrete.

Thanks for sharing this epic milestone in your Arizona journey. You have a magnificent shop that should last your lifetime and beyond. Will you be adding spray foam to the underside of the roof and end panels to insulate and increase structural rigidity.?
Since you do not have any wire reinforcements in your slab concrete you may want to consider adding a metal sleeve in the floor rebar holes to distribute forces from the door bolts. If you have a spare foot of 3/4” pipe that could be cut into two 6” lengths (preferably 45° diagonal to facilitate pounding into the ground) and inserted into slightly larger floor holes leaving rebar touching pipe rather than concrete. The extra inch or two below the concrete should solidify the rebar channel to maintain vertical without deforming and cracking the concrete. Steel pipe would be best as a galvanic reaction could occur between steel rebar and copper.
April, it was great seeing you with your grand dog tending plants in your yard and garden. Will you be keeping the motor home or posting to on marketplace? It’s probably in shock now that it has left shade.
Wishing you, Red and your family a blessed thanksgiving season. Peaceful wishes from the southern shore of the Great Swamp Erie in NE Ohio.

I think with all the price hikes, our ‘throw away’ culture is going to be a thing of the past. We still plan to post videos occasionally, and maybe even show some of Red's wood and metal projects or machine restores. Maybe eventually another one of our kids will be building a house out here too. 🧡🏜️

I love the dedication and effort going into this. It is amusing sometimes though, seeing such an obvious lack of construction experience, like being surprised you'd want to predrill for a screw into hardwood. Or "framing" for a window without including any studs, let alone cripples (look it up), adjacent to the window. it's not a bad idea to at least make things LOOK like they MIGHT meet the building codes. A lot of these people start out screwing things up in what looks like a small way, then spending an inordinate amount of time accommodating their previous screw-ups. Still, you've gotta admire the focus to complete the project, even if it sometimes takes more time and money than just building such a shop to code using conventional construction.

It wasn't a surprise, he knew it wasn't going to work without pre-drilling. Just mentioning it. It's definitely not a traditional build or to code. We have an opt-out permit. We made use of the structure that had already been very useful to us. As well as some materials we already had, and made a nice, inexpensive, multipurpose, building and shop that has suited our needs wonderfully. Building this the traditional way, would have been WAY more expensive.

@@RedandAprilOff-Grid Oh. I thought he said he was breaking off screws, then decided to pre-drill. Most people don't frame with hardwood, at least since the 1800's... Anyway, predrilling is best in any type of wood, if it is practical for the job at hand. It makes a stronger connection if just the threads cut into the wood. Otherwise, the tendency is for the wood to split, and then the wood loses strength and the threads don't get as good of a grip. I know that used, too-short, difficult-to-work-with lumber seemed cheap at the start, but... I'd also recommend a bottom chord (use full-length lumber!) on those scabbed-together roof "trusses" (speaking of too-short lumber), although hopefully the shipping containers are stable enough to hold things together. I think it's great that you all are not afraid to take on such a project despite not having worked for years in the trades. I admire that, and enjoyed the videos, although I do get somewhat frustrated at all the little unforeseen details and have to skip or fast-forward, or just take a break and come back another day to watch more. Still, I wouldn't have watched as much as I did if I didn't find the videos interesting and informative, not to mention entertaining! Don't stop now! :)

@@dougselsam5393He broke off a few of the 1 1/2 inch metal to wood sheeting screws. Once he ran out of those he knew the 2 1/2 inch definitely weren't going to go in without pre-drilling. He talked about the benefits of pre-drilling several times in the video.
When you can get rough cut 2×6×10' hardwood boards for $2 each it's definitely worth using them, even though it was a lot more work. Hardwood is a lot stronger than pine, they have a good amount of overlap, and they are bolted together at the joints. It's been a fun and challenging build, but it's even more fun now that it's done, and he can enjoy using it. Thanks for watching!

Oh yeah, I remember. He had the old bolts laying around, but then ran out and used some longer ones. Yup, didn't miss that part. Don't forget the cost of the bolts and labor to scab together the rafters (trusses?). One handy tip: You can sharpen big drill bits using a bench grinder or belt sander, just twirl them in your fingers holding the tip at an angle against the sanding surface. BTW I was thinking those hardwood boards might have made a nice product you could sell: benches. Just clean them up and add some legs, if any more are available. If they are a bit long for benches, use the cutoffs to make the legs. I spent some time framing roofs for custom homes, became a foreman, and also got hired to redo CAD blueprints where the architects couldn't get the rooflines to converge, and I'm used to everything lining up to within a 16th of an inch, so that's where my background comes from. (We never used trusses for custom homes. Better to have usable attic space.) Even so, it expands my outlook to see great fun projects like yours. I've had a few ideas for container-based buildings, and it helps to see what others go thru, so thanks and keep making great videos! :) @@RedandAprilOff-Grid

He has made all kinds of things out of the hardwood boards, besides the barn and well house, garden trusses, window frames at our daughter's house, our kitchen table, he also made his sawhorses, and he still has some furniture quality boards leftover. They are ash, cherry, red oak, and a piece of some unknown variety. Our son-in-law also used the wedges we pried off to heat his home last winter.
Red has sharpened many drill bits in his lifetime, but didn't have things set up to do it. Now he has his drill press cleaned up, tuned and ready to go. Thanks!

Great shop! I was looking into building a shop somewhat like this, but I was going to use 3-40' High Cube Containers. Place them in s "U" shape and pour 40'x40' of concrete slab inside the "U," creating a single car garage, another single car garage used as a workshop and then 16'x39' as a hobby room. Live in 1-40' container, 1-40' container as another hobby room, and the last 40' container as storage and the utilities room, water tank, reverse osmosis, solar batter storage, inverters.

Great timing Red seriously. Great project and very detailed. Being an aircraft jet mech for 34 yrs gives me a serious lack in this dept. Latin America we placed 2 containers together and refurb'd inside, floors next. Will add a 2nd on top over looking our stream. Purchasing 2 40's now to start the large garage with a 1 pc sliding door. Your width perfect-same thinking. Garage to butt up against house. Building 3 36' domes in lower lot as well. Thank you, blessings

I really like your video build project. We call pours like this hop scotch pours. From my experience with concrete work, I think you did a great job & one you will enjoy for years. It is all about planning. Ventilation will be important to help cool this structure. But you already know this and have finished the project. You should be very proud of your self for the quality you build it.

Nice, kind of what I hoped to do when we move to our son’s land. Places to park tractor indoors. Put some batting roofs on outside ling side of Connex to store tractor implements.
