  • In this video I explain in detail how to write a cover letter when applying for an electrician apprenticeship. I show you the cover letter that I wrote when I was applying for the Inside Electrician Apprenticeship program at IBEW Local 48. I explain why I chose to include certain things in mine and how doing the same can benefit you greatly.
    This video is the first video in a new series/ playlist where I’ll explain how to write a cover letter, resume, and how to put together a portfolio. This playlist will be very specific to electricians, though the information may still be beneficial for anyone applying to any job.
    As stated in this video, I’m sharing my cover letter in good faith that it will only be used by you as an example and that it won’t be actually copied. Everything in mine is specific to me, my experiences, and IBEW Local 48.

    Quick question: well maybe not so quick:
    how long does it take to become a general foremen
    what is the natural pathway in the electrician career (for example- apprentice 5 years, journeyman 3 years, master licensed 2 years, ?) I do not know the exact amount of time from each step to the next and would be interested in that
    also how hard is it to become a member of the union (ibew) if I worked as an apprentice for some company non union and then finally got into ibew after lets say two years of electrical work, will I then need to complete another 5 years of ibew apprenticeship?

    Hey I had a question was going to see if you could help me out or if anyone else knows and understands my question. I had signed up for the local Union 611 here in abq, NM about 2010 I took the test to see what I knew and what was going to be my base pay and year , after I had scored a certain yr and pay and was told to put my name on the list for availability. And was told to call every week or so to check in and maybe I could be lucky to get moved up or land on a project, due to fellow Union members were seeing anywhere from 30days to 120 days before getting the possibility to get on a project. Well i ended up being registered and all but I could not wait that long so I eventually went to a non union company and was still doing electrical work. Mainly industrial then solar fields , and finally heavy commercial. And haven't gone back to Union 611. Well finally this past week I was told about position in a project that has started in the Facebook building that is here in Los Luna's , NM with a company that is Union . My question is would I put the companies name on cover letter or the union or would I have to incorporate both in cover letter? Thanks in advance

    Some people say industrial electrician are not real electrician because most of the work is control work it that true

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +2

      Hey Jeremy!
      I haven’t personally ever heard that. Industrial work would still require a full on electrician journeyman license, to technically speaking you are still an electrician. People might be saying that because a lot of times when you factory type work with motor controls you will be working with small wire. I have heard this though, “The smaller the screwdriver, the bigger the paycheck.” A lot of that work is pretty specialized and you can actually end up being paid a lot more if you are good at it.
      Industrial work is a pretty big category of work though and also includes working with very big pieces of equipment and very large wire sizes. I can tell you that whoever said that (about them not being a real electrician) is wrong.

    How do you know if your list rank is good or not?

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jared!
      It really depends on how many apprentices they are taking in how often they do interviews. I ranked 65 and they were taking in 18 new apprentices every month, so I knew that I would be in within 4 months of getting my rank. They weren’t doing interviews again for another 6 months so I knew that I was pretty much guaranteed to get in. My brother ranked 111 at the same time and he still made it in too.
      I would call your training center to find out how often they are taking in new apprentices and also how often they do interviews. That will give you a really good idea of if your rank is good enough or not.
