The Unconventional Love Story of Areefa Siddiqui and Ustad Nazar Hussain
*This was an unusual marriage in the eyes of the world.* A glamorous actress from the world of lights and glamour married a man 30 years older than her, a man who bore no resemblance to the handsome actors of the time like Waheed Murad, Mohammad Ali, or Dilip Kumar. Showbiz personalities are often stereotyped as being materialistic, marrying wealthy landowners or industrialists for security. But this marriage was different; it wasn't about a "security blanket."
When she heard him sing on Radio Lahore, she felt as if everything had stopped. The magic of the master's voice had cast a spell on her. She was entranced. Her soul and mind were asking, "Could anyone sing like that?" In that moment, she decided to leave everything behind. Giving up the limelight, stardom, and wealth wasn't easy, but she did it all to marry the master and retire from public life. The master and the famous actress stayed together for 26 years until death separated them.
This isn't a story from a film or drama; it's the real-life story of actress Areefa Siddiqui and Ustad Nazar Hussain. How could a talented, beautiful, and popular artist like Areefa Siddiqui undergo such a transformation? While I can't claim to fully understand the spiritual and psychological aspects of this transformation, I've seen Areefa up close. Perhaps it was the pull of a vast ocean of love that I witnessed.
At the time, I had only been in journalism for two or three years, but Areefa was already a superstar. In various TV dramas, Areefa had proven her talent alongside established actors like فردوس جمال, عابد علی, and قوی خان. My close friend Babo Baral and my brother, Sohail Ahmed, weren't stars yet but were very close to Areefa. Babo Baral was deeply in love with Areefa.
Pakistan Television, in the early 1980s, requested Madam Noor Jehan to sing. The Queen of Melody agreed on the condition that Ustad Nazar would compose the songs for her. The ghazals Ustad composed for Noor Jehan for the program "Tarannum" are considered masterpieces. Songs like "Raat pheli hai tere surmai aanchal ki tarah" and "Hum hain nikhat hain na gul hain" were recorded for Tarannum.
Like Mehdi Hasan and Noor Jehan, singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle also wanted to sing Ustad Nazar's compositions, but political, cultural, and commercial relations between the two countries hindered this. The Ustad passed away at the age of 82 due to lung cancer. News of his death was overshadowed by the senseless news of a police encounter and an anchorperson who tried to gain ratings from Zainab's heinous murder.
Areefa, sitting on the funeral bier of Ustad Nazar, was expressing her condolences. She was dressed in black, and sorrow was etched on her face, but her tears had not dried. She recognized me in an instant, even though I had grown a beard and become unrecognizable. Areefa had become one with Ustad Nazar. Both of them were weary of the media.
