    Your reason for loving Slam Dunk is the reason I love Hajime no Ippo; I have had the pleasure of re-watching that anime over and over and I still hold out hope for another season! You will grow to love the protagonist and you will learn the sport of boxing through a true beginner as well. The cast around him are just as great and I would say that Takamura is one of my favorite characters in any anime. He exposes himself to be the greatest person, you just need to see it happen.

    Basketball wsn't a really popular sport in Japan at the time so the series had good reason to want to have newcomers follow along. I love authors like Inoue who like to introduce their own , relative, eclectic tastes and ultimately succeed in making their interests more popular.

    • @Maloolz
      @Maloolz 7 лет назад +29

      Ashita no Joe is amazing, but it's not great because of the boxing, it's great because it has a really well crafted story and consistently written, well developed characters. The sport of boxing takes backseat to that, and it shows in how much the series likes to gloss over a lot of Joe's actual career.
      Hajime no Ippo on the other hand is great because of the boxing element, because, similar to Slam Dunk, eases the reader into the sport before throwing more complex and interesting strategies and skills into the equation. Contrasting with Ashita no Joe however, its writing is lacking especially in the later parts of the manga/anime, and its characters are more or less your boilerplate shounen characters. But that shouldn't matter too much unless you're a grumpy fuck like me who is tired of Shounen Manga tropes.

    I remember not caring for sports until I sat down and actually learned it from someone. It's really simple to learn and it's really fun to watch every once in awhile. After learning about sports and not caring prior I can't stand when people call sports stupid or pointless after they don't understand it because it just makes me feel like me when I was ignorant and called sports dumb. Once you learn why people enjoy it you can understand why it can be exciting.

    I think this is one of the best anime to ever exist. It's not unrealistic, which I find a hard to find quality in all anime and manga shonen. If you read the manga, they don't actually win anything and just end up being passionate about the sport and be good players but not the best. I found that amazing. It makes it relatable to a looooooooooot of basketball amateur players like me even in their 30s or 40s. It perfectly resonates with our own basketball sport love. When I first started playing , I thought I was gonna be amazing at the sport and throughout school and college I grew to be a very good player, a good team player, a consistent player with technique. All this happened through a lot of defeats. There was one thing that always latched on to me though, and I felt this more so in basketball than any other sport. I'll never be in the big leagues and I could never be the best. It just isn't going to happen even if I played 24x7 for the rest of my life. At some point you just accept that and realize that it isn't about winning or losing anyway or being the best. It's about the sport and the love of it. The rush you get on the court when competing against another team member or the opposing team's counterpart.
    This anime and manga put that feeling into art more so than any other shonen. I've never felt an ounce of relatability with goku or naruto because the world they live in and the things that happen in those worlds are so far away from reality. Even if I learned how to fight, the real way to win a fight is to run fast and away from it.
    This anime/manga could've easily gone the other way if they just unrealistically showed shohoku winning everything and going on and becoming national champions. It's a manga that isn't about winning or achieving your dreams, it's about the journey to achieve them and how fulfilling it actually is, regardless of victory or defeat. It's a good lesson about the real world and how in life you're going to never be the best at anything really, there's always going to be some person better than you. But it isn't about that at all. It's about giving your 120% at something you're passionate about and that alone is the best fulfilling victory you can get.
    It got critical acclaim, but sometimes it hurts me when reviewers just always see the literalness in it and never actually think about the actual philosophical lesson in the manga that Inoue put in. This isn't a one of guess because you can see that theme in almost every manga he has written. It's not a surprise because Inoue's own life has been like that. He was extremely talented but in no way the best. he got a lot of money, fame and recognition but still never got the chance to be one of the manga greats. Life just isn't like that. But it doesn't matter. As long as you get to play. You play hard.

    • @Epsilonsama
      @Epsilonsama 5 лет назад +2

      That's another facet that adds to the realism of Slam Dunk. Non of the characters became champs or anything of that sort. But they all sure loved the sport. Most sports manga follow the traditional escalation formula of making the MC team become better and better and winning more and more games and titles. Slam Dunk doesnt go that route and keeps it grounded in reality. IRL no deadbeat team is going to win it all even if said team has promising talent. It takes time for that too develop and it's a good life experience for the kids to learn early on.

    That method of story telling where the protagonist learns as the series goes on reminds me of how Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V started with the protagonist learning about how Pendulum summoning mechanic works, albeit in a rather rushed fashion where he "somehow" masters it in the span of a few episodes. Despite this, I feel it did a pretty good job of actually teaching me the method of play in the actual card game where I learn with him rather than him know it already. It's nice to see that this method of story telling is used in more places than I thought. Awesome video as always!

    That Excalibur reference from Fate Zero was so accurate of an example. The first time i saw Saber do it blew my fucking mind it was so amazing and epic, so i continued watching not only be cause I just all around loved what was happening in the series, but for the next time she did it. Excellent analysis as always dude, also thanks for the Kaji recommendation video Its thanks to you that I've started getting into all these different types of board games instead of just chess(which is boring to me.)

    I remember when Shonen Jump had chapter 1 of Slam Dunk many years back. I was so surprised how he didn't start put as some prodigy who was obsessed witb the game (which is why I couldn't stand Prince of Tennis). You pretty much nailed on the head why I got interested into the manga. Glad to hear you talk about it!

    I love Slam Dunk. I've always been more attracted to Sports series where the main character isn't already extremely good. I'd suggest Eyeshield 21 which is another great Shonen Jump sports title.
    And the Slam Dunk anime is good up until the very end. They unfortunately do not adapt the Nationals arc.

    Slam Dunk is a series I've always had my eye on. However, I don't know what it is about sports media that makes it such a low priority for me.
    My first one that I sat through and enjoyed it for the most part was a show called "Cross Game". A baseball show of which I didn't know TOO much about the game despite playing Little League. I think Slam Dunk and a tennis one by the name of Baby Steps are more my thing.
