They also purposefully animated their mouths differently than the spoken dialogue, even in the original Japanese, to further imply what they're saying from their mouths is not what we hear as the audience. Very cool. What this language is called will be revealed later on, amongst many other related things. Very much looking forward to that.

When the English dub called him "the guardian of earth", it wasn't far from what he is. He just watches over the planet and has some special abilities and privileges. He's a powerful worrier but he's not omnipotent or anything like that, nor is he immortal.

The use of weird sound effects in English translations was a fairly common means of old school anime of showing that a different language was being spoken relative to the main characters. Goku goes on difficult quests or studies under a master and quickly overcomes the difficulties or passes the curriculum in record time! You know, it takes decades to learn the Kamehameha Wave, (well, according to Roshi!), it would take years to get the bogus divine water etc. This time, Goku really did have to sit down and buckle up for some serious training--and it DID take him years. And for all the time spent, and as powerful as Goku has become, He might still be found wanting in various ways. That's certainly an interpretation from the conversation with Kami; for example. But there might be other meanings as well. If nothing else, we see a short stack of episodes where Goku takes on trials and fails or falls short of complete success. If you go back to the previous training and adventure episodes that are between the main adversarial adventure and the tournament of the time, they are ALL surprisingly short in terms of episodes, even though they represent several months or even upwards of three years. Tien knew that he'd be in for a rough time, he understood that he won the previous tournament more to luck than power, and it was all the more so when Goku took down King Piccolo and all Tien could say was that he delayed King Piccolo, and had the dubious honor of failing to beat Drum and got used as a hostage by King Piccolo. Tien's trained all the harder for it, and he's aware that he's gotten 'schooled'. I'm sure that he was aware that it would happen once he learned of Goku's extra weight training and that he was fighting Goku with Goku literally weighed down. But he didn't give up, and is sensitive enough to suspect that Goku wasn't even going all out. And you're right, Suzy. It's a big difference between fighting in the tournament and fighting for life and death. Goku killed Tambourine in that he was willing to fight with merciless, deadly intent in a way he usually doesn't. As serious as Tien was in facing Goku, Goku was pretty much just having fun, deliberately getting zapped and taking a long fall, only to stand up and then quickly defeat Tien. Well, you've seen Kami's plan! He could have sealed Piccolo away, but Piccolo has outgrown it and was able to turn it back! Kami referred to Junior as his 'weaker half', but that's more correctly referring to King Piccolo. Junior (Demon Junior, which he's actually going by), perhaps by taking a longer period to grow up, isn't just some servitor child, but may have become superior to King Piccolo himself! They never used that dialect again in the series, it's one if those things Toriyama uses one time and totally forgets about it later on
